Mikey, I severely damaged the middle finger on my fretting hand in an accident and have had nerve damage pain in it for a few years. I went from playing daily for 15 years, to giving up on it entirely. Working through some of these exercises you have shown is finally getting me back into it and playing through the pain. It's been really helpful, so thank you.

From personal experience, I've only recently found an urge to seriously practice. I'm 14 years old, and I picked up the guitar shortly after my 12th birthday about two and a half years ago. Since then, I've never actually taken "guitar lessons" nor have I ever really strictly practiced. Mostly I just learn songs by ear when I feel like it or see a video of someone playing something and figure it out. Watching this channel has brought me a bit of an inspiration to up my game, restring an electric and start practicing some scales little by little.

Hey just want to say that youre doing an amazing job and probably the best guitar player on youtube right now, your videos never fail to educate and entertain. As a beginner guitar player this is perfect insight to how other guitar players approach learning. Thanks!
@thevhs111 ай бұрын
First instrument I “learned” was piano, I say “learned” cause I’m self taught and never actually learned how anything works, like key signatures and stuff. But, I did learn scales; I actually like learning scales as it’s just memorizing a certain order of notes. Once I started playing guitar, I just thought of the fret board as a weirdly laid out keyboard.

@arvetemecha11 ай бұрын
You might consider buying new strings, or you will 1) hurt your fingers 2) wear your frets very quickly 3) probably lose tuning stability and sound bad. No need to buy expensive string sets in my humble opinion, nowadays after trying a lot of brands and fancy stuffs, I stick to ernie ball "regular" 10-46, they last quite a long time (at least a few monthes) just by cleaning them often after playing with a simple piece of cloth.

The biggest thing that most legends did that us normies don't was that they played on stage as often as humanly possible while doing studio work and being in exchange with some of the best musicians they could get their hands on - on top of practicing. You didn’t do the vai exercises right. It’s meant to practice finger independence, not use fingers 1-2-3-4 and jump down. It helps if you have the actual book with the fingerings and explanations. He isn’t doing just those 6 exercises for 2 hours of the day, he has permutations to practice with. It’s like Hanon (Classical Piano Pedagogue) for guitar. Basically practicing every finger combination until everything is properly trained. The thing you struggle with at 8:55 should be fingered 1-2-3-4, 2-3-4-1, 3-4-1-2,4-1-2-3. It’s impossible the way you played it, but my beginning guitar students can handle it when they’re told what to do. You should give it another try. The other hours are more musical. An hour on chords, trills, jamming, etc. TLDR: Mikey only played the first, not musical exercises. You should be able to hear in Vai’s playing that he’s practicing more basic finger exercises.
@TheGtrman9111 ай бұрын
That Vai exercise can also be done with different picking techniques to help hammer out things like alternate picking/economy and going for an even tone with staccato/legato.
@AWMail-uw3hb11 ай бұрын
@@TheGtrman91 Well said! There’s a lot of use there.
@TheGtrman9111 ай бұрын
@AWMail-uw3hb I think most people have the same mentality as him when they start doing the more 'grindy' parts of music, I know I and many others did at music school. Playing scales over and over seems boring as hell, but those foundations allow you to do the cool shit everyone loves to do. I know i was bored as hell sitting for hours in a practice room just hammering out scales and arpeggios until my brain went numb, but I could see the results when I was playing the things I liked. An exercise isn't just something you do over and over until you get the notes right, it's a framework for you to improve all aspects of your playing.

What are you addressing? That he's trying too hard to learn the riffs, in which case, no. That's stupid, you should always try your hardest to learn anything, and I'd like to see you play as well as he does. Or that he's trying too hard with his videos, which again, is baseless. This video was great! And it doesn't give off "attention grabbing" vibes at all. Just because he's a smaller youtuber but still manages to make quality content doesn't mean he's "trying too hard" he's just good
