One of the most important aspects of speed picking is hand synchronization .. If you are not able to synchronize your hands on one string .. a simple ostinato ... start there, then add string skipping

One thing to add, not all pick sizes matches all players. I noticed this before when I received a pick from Jonathan Donais. His was pointy, mine was a regular size. Theres definitely a difference. How you angle the pick is one thing, how you hold it is another thing also. Before, I used to closed all my hands but there are some buzzes or noises. When I relaxed my hand, just played fast with my picking hand relaxed, it somehow resembled John Petrucci's. Since then, that is how I hold the pick. I felt less wrist strain and just worked on the angles and arm movement.

My dude, I have been trying to play for five months and thought something was wrong with me. I had 80% of beginner technique down, but something always seemed off. No matter how many videos I watched, it was off. At the ~7 minute mark when you talked about how to hold the pick and the angle, you cleared up 99.996% of the my issues. Thank you so much. Liked, subscribed, recommending you to all the other shred-dad guitars guys possible. Thank you so much.

Yes, agreed. Good points. I've practiced both wrist and elbow picking, by switching between wrist ( fast runs +180BpM ) and elbow ( middle tempo 180BpM and below ) you have a wiggle room with dexterity and stamina that way. Working with hand synchronization, you'll also need to play tuplets and triplets (and quintolas and septolas) to really master your sense of rhythm I play in Chamelion - Legends & Lores (Rockshots Records) 2023 Power metal

As a guitarist, I could play Yngwie when I was 16 and really into shredding. As I got older, I got into Blues, Country and classical guitar. I got into legato over speed picking. Now I’m in my late 40’s and trying to go back to play Yngwie and I’m having to learn all over again.

After 40 years playing guitar.... I thing theres no other element who took me more time discovering. Changing and reinventing than alternate picking. Sweep, tremolo , cross picking, inside string changes , outside string changes , even groups. Inside skipping strings. Outsides skipping strings... A new problem in every corner need a new aproax . Every number os notes for string need diferent strategy. The less notes for string harder it becomes If you is like me and want to do from sweep like gambale to cross like steve morse. Its a lifetime journey to develop and another to keep .

Its neat seeing how rock/metal people play vs how bluegrass players do it on an acoustic. The rock/metal guys don't do much in the way of cross-picking, but their legato work is more of a thing that's afforded them by a very different kind of guitar. Just totally different and valid skill sets that take a ton of work.

Wow, Eureka moment with this video. Been playing for a long time and it's only after watching this that i realised my forearm resting on the guitar body has been restricting my movement - no wonder my alternate picking would fall apart on the G, B & E strings. Just checking to summarize:It took me ten years of hours a day to open the doors of speed picking techniques and all I can say is that from a certain point on we are all on our own and persistence ,posture and breathing relaxation are the main key elements before all the above start to flow. .And sometimes it's good to pay close attention to the fretting hand technique

Great video, and focusing on the movements is a great way to get that point across. Now, I think what needs not to be minimized is the Energy, the movements will be wide or narrow according to many particular factors, but the energy needs to be there and it needs to be controlled first to synchronize with the left hand, then to get the pick where it needs to be (especially when crossing, more so when skipping strings), and finally to render the expression so you can render the song. The energy comes from the movements, if you start by not minimizing it, you will get to the point where you are controlling the Energy, and from there fluent playing.

So glad to find your channel. Great presentation and information. I started playing in '84, with little improvement since about '00. Started learning new stuff the last year or so. This is huge for me. My guitar teacher back then, who was very fast, taught me using the thumb was more efficient. I even remember an article by Steve Morse saying to draw tiny circles on paper to refine this technique, which I would do in school. I have been employing your techniques the last three days. Difficult habits to break, yet am beginning to improve. Thanks so very much.

Thank you for this great video, the picking hand, imo, needs more work and it's more complex as the work with the left hand. Relaxing / relaxed muscles are absolutely fundamental for fast and clean picking! If you have small hands it's difficult just angle the picking hand from E to e...so it helps to move the whole hand up and down.

In the short time I've watched your video it has already helped me! I have been struggling to get the correct picking technique on Yngwie's "As Above, So Below." I was getting some unwanted string noise when I would try to sweep the notes in the opposite direction of the main theme. I changed my pick angle to a more downward slant as you suggested and that did the trick! A much cleaner attack with better note articulation and a *burst in speed! I will continue watching your videos and pick up playing tips from you. Much thanks! 🤟

I have found a light as feathers touch with alternate picking and total relaxation of the left hand produces warp speed shred. Another thing is the way you pick and hold the pick is going to be slightly different for every player, there's no wrong way. I hold the pick parallel and light touch attack for warp speed.

The Al Di Meola riff is the most intimidating for me. I mean, picking that fast on arpeggios using alternate picking is just a skill that requires a lot of time to master and play with relaxed hands like how Rick Graham will play.

Good stuff and great job I like shredding and was raised on it like a lot of us but I’ve recently come to really realize nothing beats an emotive, tasteful and expertly crafted solo in the vain of Hotel California, Comfortably numb etc. To me that’s real guitar playing, which is to say, using the guitar as a true musical instrument rather than as a vehicle for pyrotechnics, which don’t get me wrong, is still cool and impressive and forms part of my playing. However, listen to the way a guy like Randy Rhoads played. He encompassed the best of both worlds. There’s a million noodlers out there who’s solos I could never be bothered to learn, but I wanted to learn just about every one of Randy’s because they were mini compositions in and of themselves.

God given talent, nothing more. As a truthful old friend of mine who knew how to play guitar good once said: "It's like learning to do the splits. Not everyone can accomplish it." I've been playing guitar for 30 years and still can't achieve this type of playing. And before the whole, "you need to practice or learn different techniques" comes out, there's videos of 5 year old children who can play Jimi Hendrix songs. Yep, God given talent.

You said Ola holds the pick tilted up which is unusual, I also do that. I think it is a heavy metal player thing. To get some serious control of palm muting which is required in metal, the palm ends up at an angle which makes it better to hold the pick tilted back. When I tried holding the pick tilted forward like you said is normal, I can solo ok but all my palm muting rythm stuff goes to crap.

However I have always had problems in relaxing my shoulder and arm muscles and lately I got interested in Takayoshi Ohmura. He has a very peculiar and effective technique that engages mostly finger movement. In my opinion his picking sounds really good and I am trying to learn it but It's difficult to learn a completely different technique.

But no matter how long I've been practicing with metronome for a long time, my right hand isn't developing speed at all. I tried different picks, techniques, angles, sync exercises, etc. Nothing. My question about picking angles and arm motion needs to be explained with: I can't hold a guitar on my right leg properly, as my left arm reach is really limited. I hold it classical style, which not only feels more comfortable, it feels more natural. I also prefer Rhoads/Flying V/Explorer shapes over strat and les paul bodies, so it's near impossible to hold them on your right leg when sitting. I always prop my foot up on a short stool or something. Having noticed that i pick with more wrist movment for changing the strings vs arm movments: is this related to how I'm sitting, or is this just years of engorced habbit i can change up whilst still sitting in this position? Anyway, sorry for the long einded question. I've never had anyone explain this so clearly before. So thank you
@OzzGuitar
@OzzGuitar 9 ай бұрын
You have to get the same angles with any type of guitar or any position of the guitar holding. You need to practice very slowly to create muscle memories. You can control your arm and wrist so change the string with your arm and pick with your wrist🤘

it's really easy to show someone a more efficient way to pick. But actually changing the way you pick is nearly impossible if you've been playing a certain way for years. I balance my right hand with my pinky, it's a pretty unique way to do it. But it slows me down. If I could hover my closed hand above the strings while playing I'd be way faster. But I need the balance from the pinky. Just barley touching, but enough to mess up any chance of playing ultra fast and clean.

My biggest obstacle is that I like to anchor my pinky finger on the guitar body and it does make my picking hand fatigue much faster. It feels so unnatural for me to not have my picking hand anchored on the body. I can still pick relatively fast but not for long periods of time. I notice all the best pickers out there don't anchor their picking hand so there must be something detrimental to doing so. Thanks for the video though, as my old guitar teacher said guitar is a lifelong journey and there is always room for improving.

John Petrucci anchors his pinky, and many others. It could be more efficient to not, but there’s no huge problem with it as long as your hand is as relaxed as possible and you’re not pressing down with that pinky! Try not to use the pinky to support your hand, only to act as a reference to tell where you are, it should only be just grazing the guitar, with your hand resting on the bridge saddles and the arm being responsible for hand position (I’m no virtuoso or teacher though, so feel free to correct me if I’m wrong on that, Ozz 😅)

@@mwmmatt1 That’s correct :) I do not allow my student to use their pinky on the guitar ;)

I haven't browse your videos to find out, but could you please do a video similar to this video covering tonality? As in, Sculpting a shredding tone. I've been working with my settings and almost there, but I believe I'm unable to recognize something.

Thanks Ozz. You've been teaching for 20 years. What proportion of students don't achieve a decent amount amount of speed? I wonder if I'm one of those who, with the best intentions, just doesn't have the right muscle or tendon mechanics. I'd be interested to hear about those who don't achieve their speed goals. Thanks.

Thanks for the video. But I have a question, should I rest my palm on the guitar bridge, or should it be floating on the strings when alternate picking?
@OzzGuitar

Never rest. Float on the connection of the bridge and strings. You can touch and feel but don't rest✌️

One of the most important thing that is missing in these kind of videos is POV. I need to see what u see, so i can adjust my picking according to that.

I'm trying to close my right hand into a '"relaxed" fist as you mentioned in one of your shorts, similar to yours and Paul Gilbert's , instead of the middle-ring and pinkie fingers flaring out, very much like 5:10. However, my middle finger touches the bottom of my index finger and my ring and pinkie curl up separately. This feels natural for lead playing, but when playing fast thrash rhythms, my fingers flare out like Dimebag Darrell's style. Should I maintain the fist position for all types of playing?
