It is so nice to see beauty and strength on stage. Misha and Gelsey performed this for the very first time with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet while I was dancing with the company, not long after he defected. His English was not great, but he took class with us and of course danced beautifully. He did know the English word "again" and the last turn at the end of the adagio section he made Gelsey do "again" and "again". It worked every time in the performances and we were pleased to watch them both dance so well in Winnipeg.

A quarter of an apple with a teaspoon of cottage cheese, four square meals a day, not to mention the emotional and psychological damage from the very man that she is dancing with. So glad to see the majority of comments are favourable to Gelsey, she is not only a magnificent dancer, but a true testament to the resilience of women and the struggles they face

She was a drug addict and an eating disorder. Hardly his fault. My cousin danced with them at the same time. He was a lovely man. The company was growing and great. Can't blame everyone for your problems. Good grief 🙄

@@garnwalkerstables you are right, i believe you and don't believe what Baryshnikov is accused of. But I feel sorry for her such painful disorders. I liked her a lot as a person and great dancer.

I keep thinking of Balanchine prodding her in the sternum and telling Gelsey he wanted to see her ribs. And she was such a tiny, petite young girl to begin with! Gelsey to me is a survivor. And the greatest ballerina of her generation.

@@garnwalkerstables Relationships are rarely one-sided affairs. Gelsey battled many demons, including destructive relationships with men. In her autobiography, Dancing on my Grave, she mentions many names, but always saves the harshest criticism for herself. She knows she is responsible for her choices and her life. But you’re naive to believe that great men with large egos wouldn’t use, abuse and discard a vulnerable young woman, if they were so inclined.

It's true, they really had something. One of the more legendary ballet partnerships. Gelsey reportedly left the New York City Ballet for the opportunity to dance with him. She left for actually a number of reasons. She didn't just want him as a dance partner. She wanted his love. One wishes things had worked out between them. But the girl was just too messed up. No, really. Read her books. Still, they really had something onstage. And thanks to KZbin and every other aspect of the internet, people all over the world of any generation can see that. John Hall, we thank you... and no doubt "Misha" and "Gels" would, too...

hi! yes, she was a complex person - and one capable of looking at herself clearly - as in the interview i referred to in another comment. yes love can make you make decisions that you would not otherwise have made. i hope she is more at peace now, teaching as she does
