Absolutely breathtaking! Thank you for uploading this. They are both so brilliant. It's actually amazing that Gelsey was able to dance to this level considering the seriousness of the ED at this time in her life. Thank goodness she recovered and has gone on to inspire and train new generations of dancers while focusing on instilling healthy habits and body image.

It is so nice to see beauty and strength on stage. Misha and Gelsey performed this for the very first time with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet while I was dancing with the company, not long after he defected. His English was not great, but he took class with us and of course danced beautifully. He did know the English word "again" and the last turn at the end of the adagio section he made Gelsey do "again" and "again". It worked every time in the performances and we were pleased to watch them both dance so well in Winnipeg.

@@mathildewesendonck7225 yeah, I know. I figured she'd never go for all the fouettes.... like watching a child's skeleton controlled by strings. Showmanship & bravura cover up a lot for those who don't know what they're really looking at. This was sheer guts & determination, with such an overabundance of skill & talent that they both got through it. I can't think they were personally on good terms at all rehearsing & performing at that time from watching this, it's looking like they're into the downhill slide in the partnership.... I'm just very grateful that she survived that frightening period in her life - what an absolutely unique and glorious dancer she was, just stunning.

She is clearly sick and made me feel uncomfortable. She obviously had poor self-esteem since a young age to allow herself to be treated so poorly and had such respect for her health and her body and her mind. She is an extreme case but lesser cases are common in the ballet world even today. I’m glad I quit and survived.

I had this on VHS when I was very young -- a taped version of the original broadcast -- from my ballet school's AV library. Just after the end of curtain calls, the original version shows Misha beckoning to Gelsey backstage, and she comes over to him, and they embrace and joke around for a bit. It was so sweet, and I remember rewinding that part over and over again when I was in ballet school. I idolized them both (and still do).

yes, i could have some choice words for the cameraman! yes, the same magic is hard to find today - i fist saw Misha just after he defected - he came to Australia with Makarova and did 'Don Q' PDD and Act 2 of 'Giselle' - total champagne and artistry!

@@garnwalkerstables Relationships are rarely one-sided affairs. Gelsey battled many demons, including destructive relationships with men. In her autobiography, Dancing on my Grave, she mentions many names, but always saves the harshest criticism for herself. She knows she is responsible for her choices and her life. But you’re naive to believe that great men with large egos wouldn’t use, abuse and discard a vulnerable young woman, if they were so inclined.

It's true, they really had something. One of the more legendary ballet partnerships. Gelsey reportedly left the New York City Ballet for the opportunity to dance with him. She left for actually a number of reasons. She didn't just want him as a dance partner. She wanted his love. One wishes things had worked out between them. But the girl was just too messed up. No, really. Read her books. Still, they really had something onstage. And thanks to KZbin and every other aspect of the internet, people all over the world of any generation can see that. John Hall, we thank you... and no doubt "Misha" and "Gels" would, too...
