In Malaysia, starting mid March till mid April this year, it will be the Muslim Ramadhan. One month of fasting and you will find a lot of food stalls in the afternoon selling for people to buy (not to eat during the day time) to break their fast during sunset everyday. That will be a month celebration of good food. From mid April to mid May is Eid celebration. In Malaysia we celebrate for one whole month and even extended to another month. So, enjoy!!
That part when you explained about how we home made our cookies made me realised how much I must value my elderly parents. Next to my TV are a few cans of my mother's cookies. Every year I asked why she makes so much for because we can never finish. She makes it one by one and packed it herself. Maybe it's her way to keep tradition going as she gets frail and older. Initially I wanted to throw it away since CNY is over. After your explanation as compared to factory made cookies, I will keep my mother's cookies and finish them all. Because I never know when she can never make for me again and I need to buy from factories.

You could consider start documenting all her new year cookies recipes. Made With Lau started the channel because the son wanted to preserve his dad's recipes while he is still alive. And you never know you may need those recipes one day.

you are so privilege to get homemade cookies from your mother. My family don't make cookies but we used to have extended family that does and those are the very best cookies that money can't even buy, but as the older generation has pass they don't make as much anymore.

You left out mentioning the big decoration themes at all the major shopping malls. Also the many acrobatic lion dance performances on stilts. As well as the st reet parades in KL, Penang, Ipoh, Johor.
The origin of the Yee Sang that we know and love can be traced back to the quaint city of Seremban, Negeri Sembilan where in the 1940s, Chef Loke Ching Fatt ingeniously crafted this flavourful masterpiece.
I born in the 60s. in the 60s 70s 80s almost every family will have the candy box during cny. then in the 90s still have but red color plastic container started with small peanut puff ( look like curry puff) as years pass by more variety available. malaysian chinese is moving foward.
Hi Hi Husband & Wife Fei Pian, FYI, the traditional "CNY snack tray" is easily found & available in MY in end 1970s & 80s but slowly disappear from 90s onwards.
