If you expect one person to make you happy, you will be crushed if they leave, break up, get sick, etc. Happiness comes from many things, not just a couple of individuals. Finding purpose at work is also important.

Was that meant to refute her lesson that your life partner is the single most important choice of your life? That you don’t believe in a life partner, or that it’s not all that important? Because saying you’ll be crushed if they leave, break up, get sick, etc., just reinforces her lesson. All that just proves it is very important, most likely THE most important choice, just like she said. Because if you half ass it, or don’t give it the effort, time, and the commitment it needs, then it very well may not work out, and you’ll have wasted who knows how much time. And a life partner isn’t only for making you happy. It’s not some toy or feel good kool aid. It’s building a life together, giving life a sense of meaning and purpose, and keeping you grounded and responsible, because without those things, again, you’re just setting your relationship up for failure. But I mean, of course they should also be a source of joy as well. However, a relationship is never as simple as asking yourself “does this person make me happy.” Or what, you think work isn’t just as tumultuous as a relationship? That policy changes won’t be made at your expense? That employers wouldn’t inconvenience you with scheduling, staffing, stagnant wages, etc.?

@@b-0220 also to add -- if one were to be with a terrible partner, it could very well actually ruin their lives. it can be very insidious and i believe choosing the right person to be in a relationship with is very important. it shouldn't be the only thing you revolve your life around sure, but it IS very important. probably one of the most important decisions a person can make in their lives indeed, if they so choose to have a partner.
