Nothing will ever surpass this score. It was Rozsa's crowning achievement. It was perfection on every level. Each character had their own theme and yet it never detracted from the film.

Salve Maria!.

The greatest film EVER made. I've seen the best, like Casablanca, Godfather, Gone with the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, but none of those, or any other, can beat Ben Hur. It is a perfect movie, the top, the truly, the genuine epic. Great plot, outstanding actings, Charlton Heston making a brilliant performance, the supporting characters like Messala, Balthazar and Sheik Ilderin doing a hell of a job... And the soundtrack. Well, the soundtrack is beautiful. Is a masterpiece composed by the genius Miklos Rosza. Sometimes i cant hold my tears watching it. By the way... I'M AN ATHEIST !

"EVER made"? This is wonderful, but I do not think the generalisation is warranted. There are many fine European (and Soviet) films, of a quite different sort. To say that Ben Hur is the greatest ever, is like comparing an apple with many pears. Quite different categories.

Miklos Rozsa was best-known for the music of dozens of 'sword-and-sandals' epics from the 50's and 60's, and he was, indeed, the master of that genre. If we want to compare, one could put Max Steiner's 1939 masterwork for "Gone With the Wind", so good that David O. Selznick waited until literally the last minute to add it to the final cut, or John Williams' original 1977 "Star Wars" music, which is still being played 40 years on. All three men are masters of their craft, and each would probably defer to the other when asked. Great work by Previn's Pittsburgh Symphony for faithfully recreating the sound and feel of the original, with Rosza himself at the helm.
@robertstrong89664 жыл бұрын
Miklos Rozsa (RIP) was a musical genius. Ben Hur set the bar so high it is seldom equaled, has not been surpassed, and I doubt it ever will be. "Spellbound Concerto," also by Miklos Rozsa, is another extraordinary masterpiece. I'm transcended--have an "out of body" experience, every time I listen to these, soul moving scores.

I love this music. There are many brilliant and ingenious film scores written by incredible composers, but as a musician / composer, I find this work at the top. The emotion and ability to express the story and Rozsa's incredible music visualization is powerful.

Cordialement.

Man! Man! And he's using the score. It's not as if he doesn't know it. You can hear his fingerprints on many 40, 50 and '60s soundtracks. Man!

why are things getting worse - shouldn't they get better having stuff like this to learn from?
@curtchiarelli89578 жыл бұрын
I can answer your question with one word: arrogance. The arrogance of a intensely narcissistic generation that thinks history begins and ends with them and them alone, that is obsessed only with its present. By contrast, a brilliant man like Miklos Rozsa thought in terms of context, of the wider picture. A life long learner, he enthusiastically sought out knowledge of his contemporaries as well as that of the past. As a result, he was a deeply cultured man whose work was enriched by this legacy then, even as his work continues to enrich us today. Knowledge of the past gave him the keys to creating art of resonance in the present which, in turn, gave a great, lasting gift to the future of our culture. That is part of the reason why Rozsa's work remains so timeless. The rest lies in that deep mystery called talent . . . . but talent divorced from its historical context and cultural roots creates art which is as inarticulate, intellectually vacuous and emotionally barren as that of the corporatized "content" churned out nowadays.

there was a Ben-Hur remake this year (don't boot me for mentioning) - I can also hear his influence on John Williams :-)

Has Zimmer perfectly evokes the current generation, creating unimaginative, vacuous music for films of no great merit.

Miklos was a friend of the great Elmer Bernstein. It was rumored that Elmer Bernstein recommended Miklos Rozsa to compose the music for the Ben-Hur film. Back in the day, the composer would conduct the orchestra personally when recording the music for the film. Today, much of the composition itself is done by electronic synthesizers, not all but some. Amazing the difference and how rich the human element sounds. No synthesizer can ever feel how much music can move someone. This is wonderful.

Miklos Rozsa was already a veteran before Elmer Bernstein started as a film composer. He's had more influence in MGM than Elmer that's why Miklos got all the biblical epics scoring assignment. Lest you forget Elmer Bernstein was blacklisted by McCarthy for being rumoured to have communistic leanings. Elmer was left nothing but scraping up assignments scoring bad cheap movies like Cat Women on the Moon and Robot Monster around the time Miklos was hitting it big scoring biblical epics. If not for the legendary filmmaker Cecille B. DeMille and his faith for the young 30-year old composer that Elmer got to do The Ten Commandments and was let back to the good graces of Hollywood.
@WMJCPA10 жыл бұрын
ChuckRazor Thank you. I believe I was confused with the Ten Commandments and it was the other way around with Bernstein composing the score for the Ten Commandments. Still these 2 men were close friends or at least as reported on the internet, and we know the internet would never report anything that wasn't true or so says the internet.
@jsrlasher47119 жыл бұрын
Totally wrong about Elmer's recommendation. I knew Miki personally and he would have been the first to confirm that as he was under contract to M-G-M he would have been pre-assigned the film.

WMJCPA spoken like someone that doesn't understand composition. Using computers to write music doesn't take away the human element, it just means you used a computer to do the mock up. There is still a human element which is the composer working out the orchestrations and so forth. Goldsmith to me is the best film composer to ever do it and the man used computers to do mock ups too. Do we pretend he was a hack because of that? And there are softwares like Finale and Sibelius that allow you to use the mouse to input the notes like a pen on paper. It's all just a tool in the end. Human element is still very much present
@Marrio497 жыл бұрын
WMJCPA originally the music was offered to Igor Stravinsky but when asked how long it would take for him to come up with the music it was too long so then it was offered to Rosa

Kenneth Crain I am not a fan of Barber or Copland, and have never heard a thing by Hindemith. Can you recommend some works? Korngold's pre-emigration music is brilliant. Try his opera, Die Tote Stadt, or look om You Tube for von Otter singing Marietta's lied.

Listen to Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber; Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copeland; Mathis de Maler or Symphonic Metamorphosis by Paul Hindemith.

I have listened to all of those. I prefer Copland's Fanfare. The Barber is alright, but nothing special. I have not heard that Hindemith for decades.

yes. absolutely. music goes where other things stop and reach part of our selves and pull a story along and underline emotional situations. the score for ben hur so obviously is a success in this--this is the beauty and power of film at its finest...
