Hey Glen. Thanks for a detailed explanation of the setup. If we have to get to the full potential of the 1 Gig internet connection, what would you suggest in MikroTik?

I built a unit out of a Dell SFF 7020 with an i3 on it, then I put a dual NIC card that I found others using so that I could guarantee compatibility. The level 4 license is only 45 bucks so I installed the x86 version on a SATA SSD.

If you go to their website they have units that ship ready to go that will do 1gig but I didn't go that route. They're about 400 bucks

This doesn't have hwnat or something you can turn on? Seems like ER-X is a better buy for gigabit fiber users. Does this not have a webui?

It has what they call "WebFig" (wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Webfig). I and many have moved to the mikrotik.com/product/rb4011igs_rm and mikrotik.com/product/rb5009ug_s_in devices for full gig capability. You could possibly be right about the ER-X.

Hi Glen, what about the basic firewall rules, they are setup as well ?

If you keep the factory configuration (talked about at 4:16 in this video) then the basic Firewall rules are set up for a NAT Firewall. As good as any off the shelf or Walmart device would be. If you are into security and want more advanced firewall settings than this device can certainly do that, but if you don't know what you are doing then just leave it alone.

@@pbrigham You are correct in that, most people do not get these devices because they are not a low end consumer grade device. These are designed to run tier 2 and 3 single and multi homed networks. They can do home routing and give you the ability to do some really amazing things if you know how to use the protocols. Other manufactures Cisco, HP, Dell and others use a tiered system when opening those abilities and price home, hobby, and small business networkers out of the really cool stuff. on the other hand a comparably priced consumer grade router would have more robust hardware behind it. One example the Ubiquity Edge router will NAT at full gig speed and is about the same price, but the feature set is dismal at best.

@@bushglen Yes, I bought one of theirs Switch for 100 USD ( 8 Gigabit Ports and 2 SPF+ 10G Ports ) and I m very happy about it, that's why I m consider a router from them also.

You should be able to open Google chrome, and enter 192.168.88.1 into the URL. Then hit enter. If that doesn't work one of 2 things. 1 your mikrotik is not set to the default configuration. Google the reset procedure. 2 you are plugged in to the wrong port on your mikrotik. Change the port that you are plugged in to.

I am sorry you could not see anything on the screen. I did record this in 1920 x 1080 resolution @ 60fps. I uploaded that file so if you have a similar resolution you should be able to pause and zoom the video.

@@bushglen you can zoom the text in WinBox. The default font setting is too small.

That is terrible. I bought it because I have 1.5Gbps and needed something to handle it. I guess I will have to send it back.

I recently got one of these, RB4011iGS+RM I can verify it handles my 650MBps Spectrum internet with no issues. You might want to try this. But you are getting away from consumer grade hardware with those speeds and moving into enterprise grade hardware. The secret to Mikrotik's success is that they provide enterprise software on lower end hardware so that you can buy what you need. If you want to stay with the level of software that Mikrotik provides but need more compute power to process more packets/second. You have to invest in hardware to run that software on.
