儚い = Ephemeral Ephemeral = Poetic and literary version of "Fleeting".

Western cultures certainly do have similar senses of ephemerality, but mainly in the past. E.g. classical culture ("ars longa, vita brevis", Homer, Greek tragedies, epigrams), vanitas art, Romantic poetry ("When i have fears that i may cease to be"), Gray's elegy, "Spring and Fall" by Hopkins, war poetry ("Move him into the sun-- Gently its touch awoke him once"), even nursery rhymes ("Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily. Life is but a dream.") The shortness of human life being universal, it would be strange for any culture not to obsess over it at some point in its history.
