If you don't understand what people say, don't be shy to ask them. They understand that English is not your native language and will be happy to repeat what they said or rephrase it. I remember when I came to England, I though that each person had their own dialect. Sometimes it still takes time for me to get used to some people's way of talking. Thanks for the update and I hope you are having a great time!
@blackberryjam2 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, totally acceptable to ask! It's crazy how different dialects can be. I'm from California. When I visited southwest England, sometimes I couldn't understand entire sentences!

I think your advice to listen to native speakers talk with other native speakers is excellent. I follow several Japanese vloggers that do things I'm already interested in. They workout, are into nutrition, they climb, they travel, etc. Basically anything I'm interested in. I combine that with slower, more focused education content (like your videos!). I only understand about 10% of what's being said, but that's up from 0%! I also never slow vlogger content down (though I may re-watch a video), I've found it helps me to be more comfortable with the speed and cadence of words when spoken naturally. Plus I get excited when I DO recognize a word, or phrase or kinda understand what's happening and what's being said. Love your videos! Keep up the great work!!
@mikurealjapanese Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment!! Yes, it's very important to expose yourself to different people's Japanese. People use different vocabs, and speak with different speed, and even the tone of voice influences how easy it is for you to understand the speaker. So I think you are on the right path! You can do it! この調子(ちょうし)で頑張ってね!
@pointmutationVR Жыл бұрын
Thanks for focusing on two natives talking to each other. I've also realized this too, where one-on-one speaking is more or less okay, but listening to Japanese people talk to each other is very difficult. As an intermediate learner who is more interested primarily with communication and not test scores, I find real life conversations more practical to learn from and get used to than the perfectly pronounced, perfectly used grammar dialogue like you see in dramas and news reports. Keep up the good work!
@mikurealjapanese Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment! Yes! I totally understand it like I said in the video, I also panic when native speakers use a loy of slangs and speak super fast between them haha But I listen to podcast where native English speakers discuss things with natural speed quite often, so I got used to it little by little! But it still happens! So I feel you haha I will keep on making content for people like you who are serious about learning how to actually talk and connect with Japanese people! Thank you for supporting me! :)

みくさん、お話し方がとても丁寧で素晴らしいです。教えてありがとうございました。 I'm glad you're enjoying your visit to the US. There are a lot of different accents even in the same place. As a native speaker of English, living my whole life in the US, there are many times where I have trouble understanding another native English speaker. I live in the Midwest now, which is the standard 'dialect' for most news and television, so it tends to be easier. Enjoy your trip!

Wow I didn't know that even native speakers struggle to understand people from other region! It makes me feel more relaxed haha Thank you!

Miku-san, your conversations are very appreciated, also the interesting subjects. Grammar is something one can get almost anywhere but natural speech is less common. Your pace and vocabulary are not that complicated either, so this is a boon for intermediate students such as myself. Arigatoo!
Wow welcome to the US Miku-san! Sounds like you're having a lot of fun! I live in Pennsylvania, so its so cool knowing you are only 2 states away!

Thank you Miku sensei for yet another great video, and I particularly appreciate the English subtitles, they are so helpful for studying (and I know how much work it takes to make them!). About understanding native speech, a good trick is to listen to sped up audio (youtube, podcasts etc.), which sounds counterintuitive, but once you get used to listening to everything on x2 it never feels like anyone is speaking too fast in real life lol. Will try the same technique with Japanese when I reach a sufficiently high level.
@mikurealjapanese Жыл бұрын
That's a very very good tip! I was doing that sometimes, but not all the time! I'm now watching the show "How I met your mother" without subtitles, so I will try doing what you just suggested! ありがとう!
@Fafner888 Жыл бұрын
@@mikurealjapanese I personally wouldn't do that with tv shows or movies because that just would spoil the enjoyment lol (unless you rewatch it after first seeing it in normal speed). I think it works the best with things like podcasts, documentaries, news shows etc., things that are meant to convey information rather than tell a story. But that's up to you because the most important thing is to watch content that you enjoy!

I'm in Japan right now and experienced the 聞き取れなかった problem earlier today at a cafe. I was very grateful that the barista was patient and repeated until I understood. Sure, it's a little embarrassing, but I don't doubt that my Japanese ability improved because of it. (Brooklyn Roasting Company in Shimokitazawa is great, btw)

Don't worry, the first time I went to Boston from Australia I couldn't fully understand some of the locals with thick accents either (as a native English speaker). It took a bit of time to adapt. I had no issue with the Californian accent.

Welcome to the US Miku! I hope you enjoy yourself. If you visit the Southern United States you might see alligators to go along with your recent crocodile viewing. You might have confused them. Alligators are native to many swampy areas. Crocodiles prefer a slightly different river or seaside habitat.

Thanks for another great video, and your hairstyle looks very cute (I cut off all my long hair, waaaaaa😢😂)! I enjoyed your observations about the US, and I was happy you enjoyed our American habit of talking to strangers since I do it a lot (because I need to balance my natural shyness!). I hope you get a chance to travel around the country, because it’s huge and very different in different places-I’m in the upper right corner, the Pacific Northwest, where many parts are still very wild and beautiful. Wherever you are, I hope you continue to have a wonderful time, and keep us updated. Bali and Australia looked beautiful too!
In America English is just 1 language. Many people speak Spanish or another language. In Japan most people are Japanese but in America, everyone has come here from another country. America is more of a place than a people. Japan is a place and a people.

After spending the summer living in Japan, i felt myself super shocked coming back and being like damn what does everyone have up their ass over here but i did appreciate how straight forward Americans are again because for example i was at family mart in Tokyo and when my phone wasn’t connecting to the printer for tickets i REALLY needed to print-the staff gave me such frustrating round about excuses for why they couldn’t print them out for me if i emailed them the tickets. That’s fine but just tell me no! lol

I admire your bravery for visiting someplace like the US, which has so many different kinds of people all over the place. The thing with English in the States is that, since there are so many different people who usually come from different cultures/countries, there are just as many different accents and word usages in the English that is used between everyday people (Not helpfully sorted or labeled like it is on the internet). Someone who primarily speaks Spanish will speak English with a different inflection on the words, or they may use words that are partially Spanish and partially English (Easy for a native of either language to intuitively know, but difficult for anyone outside of those languages to figure out just by context or the root meanings of the word), or they may swap between English and Spanish frequently... yeah! It's definitely not easy for people from linguistically homogeneous countries to visit places that are significantly diverse in an everyday sense. If all goes well, I plan to visit Japan next year, but I'm not confident in my Japanese skills, so I'll lurk on channels like you and hope to learn something.
