For precision shots, mil/moa reticles are definitely the way to go. For general combat effective hits on man sized targets at distance, bdc reticles [can] work. ACSS reticled scopes from Primary Arms are hard to beat in that category.

Once again a well presented video. For a precision rifle I wouldn’t think of mounting a BDC reticle for use at distances passed 500 yards. Milradian all the way. I believe a trained marksman, (not a sniper) using a 5.56 AR platform in combat can confidently, rapidly and effectively engage targets from 200-500. In that capacity, I think the BDC are hard to beat. Just like with any MOA or MIL reticle DOPE gathered, the BDC shooter needs to learn where his rounds will impact based on his rifle, ammunition and where he places his reticle in relation to his target. Picking up someone else’s rifle equipped with their zeroed BDC optic and expecting uniform results is optimistic.

Learned this one the hard way. Using a BDC is like eschewing the standard measurement of a foot in favor of using the literal length of some random guy's foot to measure distance. You can practice and train and learn your optic, your gun, your ammo and you have to do that with your Mil reticle too but with a BDC, it's a bespoke thing and not as translatable to anything else.

So how I understand this: MOA/MRAD Graduated arbitrary reference markings. They don't currently mean anything. You take your weapon system and collect DOPE on targets at range and give those reference markings meaning, in either Imperial or Metric respectively. It is made to be a blank slate that you can apply to any weapon system, but requires you to put in the work. BDC Is the reverse of the above. Factory has a test rifle and etches reticle markings to match points of impact at set distances. If your rifle does not match the factory test rifle (barrel length, projectile velocity, projectile weight, optic height, etc), your points of impact will differ from those prescribed by reticle markings. It's markings are set, and you must match the system that Factory used to create the reticle; this does not require you to do the work of matching reference markings to points of impact at distance (factory already did that), you just have to confirm that point of impact with your system matches the Factory's reticle and test system. If you fail that, you might as well have bought MOA/MRAD. TL;DR BDC is a preset that is perfect for an exact system configuration, and useless for all others. MOA/MRAD is blank references, but can be configured to any system and ammo, and once configured is perfect for it.

I just ordered a Athlon 1-4 Talos. It has a MIL reticle and has a lifetime warranty; I can't wait to take it out to range and start practicing with it 😁

I have a BDC reticle. What I ended up doing was just coming up with my own DOPE and cross referenced it with what the company lists. Its off for sure but like - I know what it is now so its fine.

I do the same thing. True the gun, load, and reticle at different distances and use the BDC lines as reference points. Works well enough for BC steel out to 600yds.

If you have to do that why not just get a MIL or MOA reticle? 🤷🏻‍♂️ Kinda defeats the purpose of a BDC reticle if it’s off that bad.

You're a bit absolute in your thinking here. For bolt guns you're intend to dial, sure a MIL/MOA reticle makes way more sense. But for fighting guns I simply use Strelok to check the BDC for my preferred loads before purchase. My Raptor reticle is only off by a few yards throughout the drop compensation on a .308 auto, and I'm never dialing that gun. BDCs have their place, just not where some people try to use them.

Another excellent video. The BDC's limitations are also why I prefer Point Blank Zero with irons or red dots over just picking an "off the shelf" zero.

Nice video! I never really messed with BDC therefore knew nothing about it, but it's nice to know the difference!

The crux of this issue seems to be speed. If I'm understanding you correctly, you're saying that once you practice and collect your dope, your MIL scope can be just as fast as a BDC, while also being able to achieve greater accuracy?
@GranTigerGaming
@GranTigerGaming 3 ай бұрын
Pretty sold on MIL, can get exact dialing in, adapt to any setup, and seems like with even a little bit of testing you can even "intuit" the MIL to finding your hold points and act like a BDC even without precise measurements.

Off subject Jon but still wanna pick your brain. I’m fixing to buy night vision and rolling on a $6,500 budget. I was considering Rnvg/Dnvg with Elbit tubes in Green phosphor or should I just buy a L3 unfilmed PVS-14?

You'll be happy with the green elbit tubes. You'll also be primed to upgrade tubes one day and already have the housing.

Hey, can you do a video about passive aiming with red dots? I have a Holosun HS403 but the IR and red light transmission through it is horrible. It's really bad especially using a pvs14.

I love my ACSS red dot 5x magnified combo. And the 5x prism ACSS sight with a holosun hs 407c on top. 600 m are more than enough to get the average job done.

Does MRAD have an equivalent to a 1- MOA ? 1-Mil is like 3.6 " + and 1 - MOA is 1.047" for people who don't know :)

Moa or mils are great for target or long range. But hunting BDC all the way. You think all guides know moa or mil or do they know yardage ? Exactly they range the animal and tell you it's 450 yards. And BDC so much quicker in field !

I went with Mil FFP years ago for my long range stuff and glad I did. The biggest problem I have now is the cost of a scope for a 22 rimfire for hunting/plinking. For whatever reason, second focal plane is significantly cheaper and gives a better selection of smaller size and weight. Since I am likely to shoot at less than 100 yards, what do you think of using a moa or bdc reticle for 22 rimfires and mil for every other rifle? The hash marks would have to be simple reference marks I guess not precise points of aim. Any thoughts?
@KineticConsulting

I'd stay away from the BDC. A 2nd focal plane moa scope is good to go, you just need to know what you are using.

Have you actually shot/trued it further than 300 yards? Most seem to be off past 300/400 yards unless you’re using an 18/20” barrel.

@@JGoodZX6R well, that's a good question. No I haven't yet. Mostly because i dont plan on engaging past that. Doesn't mean I should stretch it out for clarification tho.

For me and 556 rifles on a 50/200 zero bdc works okay at 300, but past that the marks for 400 and beyond skew to much depending on the barrel length or ammo. Its good up to 300 jumping from one ar to another (exception of barrel under 11-12" where drop is more extreme). Still can use the bdc as guesstimate though aiming higher for a short rifle and higher on a longer and just memorize holds.

All Im hearing is... This works for me so it will work for you. Don't use BDC because I don't understnd it and so I don't like using it.
