My uncle was a test pilot on the A-10 program when I was in my 20's, and what I most remember was the nose bobbing up and down when the brakes were released. He said it was his favorite ride of all the aircraft he had flown. Thanks for the memories.

I was stationed @ the 'Bach from 8/71 to 8/73 as a USAF Security Policeman, LE, K-9 and Site Security. We were the home of the 2nd MOB, 601st Air Base Wing, and had a permanent Army detachment with Hueys, Loches and Cobras. At the end of our runways heading for Sembach village, there was a French Tank training ground that the Army helos used, to play war games in with the French. What was a real treat was when the F-4s from Ramstein would come to play with the tanks, in a close-air support role. A couple of times we when we were off duty, we went and watched the games from a hillside. Pretty cool, I thought. I can only imagine the ass-kicking the Warthogs brought to those games. I envy you your experiences there with them.

I remember seeing the A10 for the very first time right when they first came out. As a crash/rescue firefighter/paramedic at my USAF base IN THE MID 70’s, we had to do what we called pre-fire plans on all aircraft and buildings. So when the A10 arrived and parked on the tarmac the Chief arranged for us to go see and climb all over it. We were used to close air/ground support aircraft like the A10 but they were really just small little A37’s, about the size and shape of a squashed volkswagen with wings, so I expected just an updated version of them. When we got out on the ramp, the aircraft there was huge! I couldn’t jump and touch the wings and you could almost stand up in one of those humongous jet intakes! Not only that, but the 7 barreled GAU 30mm canon just looks fearsome sticking out the front. It actually goes almost all the way thru the fuselage too. The pilot made sure the gun and radar were safe and off, then we got to learn all about that plane. Sure was fun and I’ll never forget it! Only the SR71 ever captured my attn as much and the A10 provided a much needed respite from only seeing B52’s all the time. Thanks for the great video.

A year and half ago I was watching my parent's house and as I walked down the driveway three A-10s flew directly at me. They were only about 500 feet off the ground. @Stephen Beck-von-Peccoz helicopters are limited in how high they can go. As they need to go higher the less they can carry. Fighting in a mountainous area means less support from Apaches. The A-10 and AC-130 really don’t have that problem. Also, all else being equal, the fixed wing have a much longer time on station and carry a lot more ammo of various kinds. Still, the Apache is a great one too but it just doesn’t have as much capability as the other two. Oh, and I have been in the two way range, just like I said in my original statement. Have you?

@@tombutcher5776 uhhh, nope. You mean the C-130. The AC-130 is a highly modified C-130 that is the modern version of Spooky. It has a 105 mm in the left troop door, and a few bofors cannons, mini guns, etc. The C-130 is still in service and is still used in the same role as when you were in.

This plane comes from a great tradition of fighter- the P-47 Thunderbolt. Both big, tough, bad-ass fighters.

I always get a laugh at the pilot walk around. I was a Crew Chef on F153 at Langley and the pilots would come out walk around grab a pilon and shake it, touch the plane here and there. The pilots and the Crew Chiefs had a bond. For the 4 years I was at Langley the tail number on MY F15 was 4125 and my pilot was Capt. Dale Cook who went on to fly for the Thunderbirds then flew commercial air liners. Anyway, even though some frowned on fraternization between the enlisted and officers but we would all get together on a Friday and have a great time. I miss those days.

My Brother was in the AF. He was stationed at Ramstein air base. He was doing encrypted work with a squadron of "birds." He said he knew reliably that the Russians were very afraid of the A 10. They had nearly no defense against it.

There's a reason why the A-10 isn't sent to Ukraine, and that's because it would die a quick death. The Russians have always had decent defenses against planes like the A10 which is why low and slow aircraft including recon aircraft to include helicopters do not have a long life expectancy during war. That goes for A10 the same as it goes for scout helicopters. Even the old ZSU23-4 would be an issue as it had its own tricks up its sleeve to avoid detection until too late. I love the A10, but its great reputation is from fighting wars against what amounted to sitting ducks with horrible tactics.

@@petezereeeah Ukraine specifically mentioned that they did not want an aircraft like the A-10 and would benefit really only benefit from aircraft like the F-16 (of course.. because the A-10 would be likely be unsuccessful in this conflict). Had the A-10 been wanted, it's an aircraft that could easily be transitioned into. Ukrainian pilots would transition into the aircraft like any other aircraft new to their inventory. In early stages of the war, several members of our congress also raised the question of the A-10, which is simply outright out of the question.

Да не плохо, не часто увидишь женщину на такой должности и такой профессии, профессия тяжёлая, не каждую возьмут. Ещё и психологически наверное трудно справляться с такой работой, сложно поливать людей свинцом, выносить перегрузки и выполнять сложные маневры чтобы не быть сбитым и в конечном итоге мертвым (штурмовики летают на самой низкой высоте, за счёт чего очень легко обстреливаются всеми видами ПВО)

Какие перегрузки маневры и ПВО , о чем вы. Их удел воевать с аборигенами вооруженными в лучшем случае Калашников. Насмотрелся на этих чудо героев в Кандагаре и на пилотесок этих же. Кстати там посимпотчнее были. . При первом же звуке сирены все натовцы как тараканы прячутся в бункеры или падают на пол не важ но где это. Потом полдня ищут куда улетела афганская шайтан труба. Противно было смотреть.
