She says she doesn't understand the difference between "лет" (liet) and "год" (god). Both words mean the same (years), but the usage depends on the number you are saying, which is actually pretty coherent: 0, 5..9 лет and 1..4 года (except for 11-14 лет), so it's strange that her mom (to whom she says sorry at the beginning) didn't explain it to her :)

This is actually quite fascinating linguistically, you don't often hear people who have switched their native language at an early age. Notice how she first says "when I was 28", then the other person corrects her because it's not that natural to omit "years" in Russian, and then she immediately loses her heavy accent because through that error her brain got briefly rewired to the child state :)

It is natural to omit “years” in this situation in Russian. What she said is “I was 23 summers old” but “summers” only used for 5-20 and for x5-x9 and x0 years. “I was 25 summers old” - ok, “I was 24 summers old” - not ok.

@@qwaqwa It's kinda nationalistic trend to vastly speak native lagnuage in post-soviet republics. Basically it causes economical problems dealing with russians, since it'll be hard to do business with russians if you speak differrent language and not russian language. And soviet and post-soviet education system was kinda good, but really sucked hard in english subject. It was kinda half-fun subject, not demanding too much from the students. From my personal experience. So for Ukrainians and the others there is a language barrier bigger than with Russians. For example if you gonna become youtube on ukraininan you'll get 100k of subscribers top instead of the million of subscribes from the whole post-soviet region.

Until the 19th century Ukrainian was regarded as just a rural dialect. Most people in cities spoke Russian. This still holds true in southern and eastern Ukraine. Those regions were conquered from the Tartars and resettled with Russians and Ukrainians. For context, while only about 15% of Ukrainians are ethnic Russians 40-45% claim Russian as their first language. If you include Russian as a second language you'll find that the vast majority of Ukrainians are fluent in Russian. This creates a situation where there are more Russian speakers who don't speak Ukrainian than Ukrainian speakers who don't speak Russian. Hence the default language of communication has long been in Russian for convenience.

My mother and father (in their middle 50s) might speak Russian at basic level. Today, Russian in Poland is not even second „second foreign” language due to English and German. But still, a lot of people in their 40s/50s/60s/70s might speak at least basic conversations in Russian (it’s also common with the rest of post Warsaw Pact countries like Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria or Hungary). I don’t know anybody who wants to learn Russian (because od the history; what Russians did to us, the Polish) but If there’s somebody here, Russian is easy because of the Slavic languages family. I saw her talking with the Russian press during a press junket promoting one of her movies. The interviewer was talking trash about her co-stars in Russian and she lit him up. He was totally unaware that she spoke fluent Russian. It was brilliant watching her defend her co-stars.

pretty sure justin knows she speaks russian, you're creating fiction my friend. there was also no 'trash talking' per se. Just a sort of gatekeeping vibe of "you're already a singer, why go into movies too?" Pls don't spread false information
@liana4474
@liana4474 Жыл бұрын
Dude, she just didn’t understand the question absolutely! Bc she barely understands Russian. The interviewer asked Justin why he chose a movie field to express his talents (since he’s a singer). A very normal question to me “what brought you to playing in a movie?” Mila didn’t understand sh…t and got in between yelling: why can’t he be in a movie!? And you (the interviewer) what are YOU doing here? But that WAS NOT the question. Mila, before she wants to show how “good” her Russian is, should really double check if it’s so.

Her Russian is not so that bad. She doesn't have any troubles pronouncing words. But her vocabulary is pretty simple, like one of a kid talking to his parents. She was brought to the US at the age of 7, so it's kind of normal.
