On the Right - Team Korea
Korea had won every World Championships and the Olympics since 2017, beating Hungary in the finals of the 2022 Cairo World Championships, 2019 Budapest World Championships and 2017 Leipzig World Championships.
During this season, Team Korea's dominance of the circuit was questioned multiple times - particularly when the team of OH Sanguk 오상욱 KIM Junho 김준호, and GU Bongil 구본길 lost to Georgia in the Round of 8 at the Madrid World Cup.
Additionally, while OH Sanguk 오상욱 and Kim Junghwan had been injured for a few months at different points of the season, DO Gyeongdong and PARK Sangwon had been brought in on few of the earlier competitions. Confusingly, in the later part of the season, despite DO's good performance and KIM being almost crippled, KIM was still chosen as the substitute for most competitions - including for the Asian Games. Then, for the World Championships, HA Hansol, was chosen as the substitute (despite not making any appearances on the team this season).
In the quarterfinals against China, HA was brought on for one bout, performed badly, and was not substituted into for the rest of the competition.
Individually, during this season, OH Sanguk 오상욱 won the 2023 Seoul Grand Prix, while KIM Junho 김준호 won Silver at the 2023 Asian Championships.

On the Left - Team Hungary
Hungary has performed very well this season. The team won both the Luxardo and Madrid World Cups. SZILAGYI Aron has been fencing well all season - winning the Budapest World Cup for the second year in the row and an Bronze at the individual event a few days previously - and SZATMARI Andras has been picking up good results in the later half of the season, including an individual silver at the European Championships. GEMESI Csanad fenced very well on the day against France. Finally, DECSI Tamas managed to place top 16 in the individual event a few days previously.
While Team Hungary is doing very well results-wise, it is becoming more and more surprising that there does not seem to be any fencers to replace the current team. The Hungarian Team has been these same four members since at least 2014 (possibly earlier and with an exception of ILIASZ Nikolasz for a bit ), and while they do well, GEMESI is 36, and DECSI is 40, and besides ILIASZ, I cannot think of a single fencer that can replace them. SZATMARI was a junior back in 2013, it just seems very surprising that in almost ten years, the country - with a triple individual Olympic Champion and World Champion; a World Champion and World Championships Finalist; and a successful sabre fencing program that has made World Championships Finals in 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2022 and won an Olympic Bronze medal - has still not managed to find a third sabre fencer who can make the individual top 16 on a consistent basis.

Kim junho brilliant speed jump play was not able to be executed when his mind clouded from his leg injury, proving kim junho is a very key player keeping point close, when he was slow because injury, he cannot make more point 😭 sadly he retired before able to show one more speed play

Is it me or does the commentator misunderstand what’s going on sometimes? E.g “He was faster off the line” but I feel like he just got his arm out first or “He thought he got the blade” when I think the though Szilagyi missed his attack because he hit after his foot landed.

Most referees don't really follow the rules based exactly on the rulebook. Like with the foot landing, it's judged based on if the hit or lunge looked like one smooth action. That's why video reviews are only available to be slowed down to 30%. Sabre fencing can't be judged on frame by frame. Plus the commentator only "commentates" and just tells the viewers what has happened based on the decision of the ref.

No surprise really since Kim Junho had a bleeding hole in his leg and on painkillers, his judgement would be cloudy. He was so much slower. No much interesting speed play. Hungry maybe will world champion again this year if Gu or Oh has any body injury 🫣
