A half-century legend guided anti-tank missile, We are investigating the MILAN. #milan #antitank #missile #mbda
What requirements was the MILAN designed to meet?
How does this anti-tank system operate?
What is the role of the MILAN in the evolution of the operational concepts of anti-tank missiles?
In which war has the system made a name for itself with its success?
Welcome to our new content. As the Weapon Detective, we are investigating modern weapon systems of the Second Cold War. The Weapon Legends is about older weapon systems. In our videos, we tell their epic stories which made them a legend. The Weapon Legends investigates these stories, reads between the lines, analyse, and tells the untold. In our videos, you can find technical information as well as historical backgrounds, what happened during the development processes, combat experience and political projection. Let the wisdom of history show us what the future would be like. Let’s investigate the veteran weapons of the past together.

when i was serving my contry years ago, i used to operate a milan, we had a g Mercedes benz with a 3 men crew. cary 4 missle with us, the milan wheapon and mira night vision heat camera that goes on the weapon. also had 2 battery`s for the camera. can see the camera in 3:05 in the video. the milan weapon itself was pretty much mechanical, only when you attatch the missle on it and activate the weapon with sliding the trigger safety latch away, inside the missle itself was a chemical battery that activated and powered the weapon system. For training whe had a special camera system that goes on the weapon, it simulated the 4sec smoke that usually came eatch time you fire the missle, and showed a dot(simulate missle) that you guide to target. the trainer could see what you do from hes own screen. also whe trained the tracking moving on a wall that had lines to make our movements smooth.

Very good video! The germam army had hundrets of 'Panzer Vernichtungstrupps' (tank destroyer groups) in the cold War Era. 3 man teams with a milan hiding in woods, small hills etc. After the fall of the Berlin wall I met a former tank commander of the east German army and he told me that they were very afraid of masses of small units with Milan hidden in woods along the roads they were planning to use for their attack on the west. The knew exactly that these small units would hjabe been extremely hard to spot and destroy and the knew the Milan was a terrible weapon. Good that this conflict never happened...

Indeed, given that Soviet planning called for a tactical nuclear and chemical weapon strike as the opening move of an attack on the West, which would have triggered a strategic nuclear response from the West.
@matovicmmilan

@@iatsd Soviets never used chemical and especially not nuclear weapons to deliberately destroy enemy's cities and murder civilians and force the enemy into submission that way. Fundamentally opposite to the Americans and their servants.

@@matovicmmilan I never said they did use them. I pointed out that we now know, from Soviet archives, that their military *planning* in the event of a war against NATO called for a chemical and tactical nuclear strike against NATO bases, strategic movement centres, and defensive routes. It's simply a fact of history.

@@iatsd I think that with that of hindsight and given the then battle plans. It was to expect both Nuke and Chem/Bio response on both sides.. THe hope was that both sides dig in within 48hrs , if not a quick escalation to that of all out of limited strikes and then all out counter strike .. Not hard to find this stuff NATO forces within 100k of the border would be overwhelmed and reduced to small uncoordinated unit actions within 24-36hrs and 5 days to the Rhine .. backed with subsequent release of documentation of a military simulation from the Easter block post breakup of Eastern Block ..

One of the most glorious and nobel missions the Milan was used in was in the War against ISIS in Syria and Iraq, where kurdish Peshmerga troops were equipped and trained on the Milan by german soldiers. The Milan was so successful in destroying the feared IS Kamikaze vehicles that many new borns within the region were named after the system.

I was a Milan operator with the 13eme DBLE (French Foreign Legion) in Djibouti a few decades ago. No way would I ever want to be a tank crewman. Before the Legion I was a Royal Marine. You can't really compare the Legion Étranger with any other army, as it operates differently to most others. Training is hard, and made harder by language problems. Everything is taught in French and if you don't understand something you will be punished for it before you even know why.

The TOW diameter is 152mm, 115mm for the Milan. Weight 10kg more than the Milan. Had an operational range 1000m to 2000m superior to the Milan. TOW is also 100m/s faster etc. TOW is comparable to the HOT european missile. It's a vehicle based missile in it philosophy (land vehicles and helicopters) more than of a infantry one, like the Milan. The shooter or the launcher is exposed to sniper fire while guiding missile to target. Still a good weapon but takes courage to use it.

Fvck all chance of ever encountering a sniper in most situations unless you're attacking fixed positions, and Milan is surprisingly hard to see launch (compared to most ATGM)

the laser guide is no longer valid for the T14 armata.. they use an anti-laser cloud.. and the laser will be shot back immediately... so look for death if you aim the laser at the armata

Hi my friend? THE Armata .... Yes a very good tank from the 2020s the "old" Milan was designed in 1962, almost 60 years before. So yes I hope that in 60 years the Russians have made progress ^^

And how many ARMATA are there? For the good old T72/T90 (which the Russian land forces mostly rely on) it could still work quite well.

@@extracuap clearly no, not every russian tank has received active protection and anti laser cloud, they are actually far from that. You simp on the T14 Armata but its developement has been delayed many times and the serial production will not start before mid-2022 according to the Russian Ministry of Defense, if not delayed again :D And again, the last versions are wire-guided so bye bye anti-laser cloud

It is a French weapon. I Guess it is sold to Germany. The Milan was sold to the Aphghan Northern Alliance and many Russian tanks were destroyed. The American Stinger took care of the Russian helicopters. These 2 weapons were the keys to bring down the Russian Army and triggered the downfall of the USSR.

Nah, totally different. Tow is better but significantly heavier. Milan is better for being carried for infantry and special forces while tow is mainly designed to be mounted on vehicles or for base protection.

Milan is much lighter, closer to Dragon. In the Soviet armoury, AT-3 and AT-5 were the equivalents.
