Beautifully said /\ Rinpoche, to me is the shining essence of Guru Devotion in action! ❤ He is not taking sides, he is simply following his Root Lama's instructions. That is all. Many times he has professed his clear stance in the issue and it is very simple - he is going to keep his promise. Thankyou, your Eminence /\

@@Luke_19951 dude there are different guru's, but one root guru. In his case he received the vows from Zong rinpoche directly and made commitments. That was sealed. In his heart, he is his root lama and promise made. There are many who take ordination from other lamas due to many reasons formally but that does not cancel out root lama and the vows one has made especially tantric. Otherwise there would have been no such issue if it were so clear cut.

@@Luke_19951 no I am not. Vows are vows. Samaya is samaya. Rinpoche explained that if his root guru had been alive he would've asked him if he could be excused. I would suggest you listen to his explanation rather than trying to bully people. How virtuous and compassionate of you!

@@Luke_19951 Students simply want to follow their tantric commitments. If you disagree that is perfectly OK, you should follow what your personal guru is saying. No ome is against you doing what is commanded by your lama whether they are against or for. Because that is their business. However, other people's vows are their own businesses and it's related to their own teacher. Creating or generating doubt in their personal samaya leads to doubt in their minds and is very dangerous for them. Highly realised beings work on their own merits and understandings but are you so sure that you are also one of them? The repercussions for denigrating a bodhisattva or Highly realised being are not so great. If you disagee then you should do so politely. Purposely making people purposefully doubt their teacher is already very bad, so I hope you will be well.

It was quite a dilemma for many Tibetans regarding this practice. I've stayed neutral regarding this because I realize I don't understand it well enough to say what is right and wrong. To those Lama's and Tibetan s who received this initiation from HH, then it's obvious what one has to do. But, if it came from your Lama, then it's a problem for you. I think the bond to one's Root Guru is the strongest and most important, as Tsem Rinpoche says. I never received this initiation but others in Jewel Heart did from Gelek Rinpoche and they stopped the practice after Gelek Rinpoche was asked by HH to decide where he stood on this. His students followed his decision. That's how it is.

I love Tsem, but as a Buddhist from another tradition, I am a little confused by his line of thinking evidenced in this video. Indeed, to me, in this line of thinking the practitioner is making the "Root Guru", a type of Demi-God, since the inference is that your Root Guru can't be wrong or provide you with poor direction, ever. Thinking like this can lead to abuses either unintentional or otherwise and is at odds with one of the Buddha's final admonitions which states in relevant part: "In response to Ananda’s fears, the Buddha taught him as follows: “Ananda! In the future, you should be a light unto yourself, depending upon yourself. You must not depend upon other people. And you must also rely upon the Dharma, making it your light. You must not depend upon others." To me it is self-evident that a Buddhist should not be reliant on any one person for direction; for the Truth resides nowhere else other than in the recesses of one's own life! Blessings to All

I like your timely quote of how Budha respond to Ananda's fears. I have always known Budhism as a way of life and not a religion. My simple definition of RELIGION is that its all about fear, guilt and control. Teachers /gurus can be our guides. But we should never give up our individual sovereignty and subject ourselves to any human beings by placing them on a pedestal. For this is likely to create a glass ceiling, limiting our spiritual growth. As spiritual beings, we are reincarnated here on earth to experience the nature of duality and ultimately reach the knowingness of oneness, as taught by Guru Padmasambhava. I have come to this conclusion after many decades of searching.

The qualifying premise being: it is the individual’s choice, whom after extensive search and contemplation, decide whom their root guru is to be.

youre not mistaken regarding what the buddha has stated, but you are uneducated regarding the meaning of an authentic root guru and an authentic tantric student. to receive an authentic empowerment and begin subsequent interaction with an authentic root guru means to have some realization and now make use of the emptiness of lord buddhas / a buddhas mind. therefore it is the highest form of dharma. without the thorough comprehension of emptiness it is just visualization practice internally and externally will appear to others as cult worship. modern scholarship on this topic no longer allows for such cluelessness on these topics, though it is always fine to ask questions.

It's not logical not to change a practice after certain years of practicing. What was 20 years ago correct for you it may not necessarily right and the best at the moment. Human beeings change, their mind change and their needs may change as well. I also argue that their is only one root teacher for a practioneer. There can be more than one, but it can be only one.

My question is that if the Guru who gave the practice passed away and his unmistaken reincarnation has returned, why not ask his reincarnation to be excused from the practice? That way we follow all our Gurus while being excused from the practice.

It is not a break of samaya to ask permission from the Guru to be excused from any instruction or practice that has been given. Verse 24 of the 50 Verses of Guru Devotion and Tsem Rinpoche himself state this fact. And if one had true faith in the Guru that gave the practice then the unmistaken reincarnation has only changed the nirmanakaya emanated physical body. The mind is the same. And all Gurus are ultimately of one nature, one taste, indivisible ultimate Dharmakaya. The Guru who is alive is an emanation of the Root Guru and the Root Guru is the emanation of Vajradhara.

@@mrwizardtamang8049 From The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment (Volume 1) (The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path, the Lamrim Chenmo) by Tsong-kha-pa “Question: We must practice in accordance with the gurus' words. Then what if we rely on the gurus and they lead us to an incorrect path or employ us in activities that are contrary to the three vows? Should we do what they say? Reply: With respect to this, Gunaprabha's Sutra on the Discipline states, "If the abbot instructs you to do what is not in accord with the teachings, refuse." Also, the Cloud of Jewels Sutra says,"With respect to virtue act in accord with the gurus' words, but do not act in accord with the gurus' words with respect to nonvirtue." Therefore, you must not listen to nonvirtuous instructions. The twelfth birth story clearly gives the meaning of not engaging in what is improper.' However, it is improper to take the gurus' wrong actions as a reason for subsequent misbehavior such as disrespecting, reproaching, or despising the gurus. Rather, excuse yourself politely, and do not engage in what you were instructed to do. The Fifty Verses on the Guru: If you cannot reasonably do as the guru has instructed, Excuse yourself with soothing words.”

Did he say that? That's your opinion. You noticed HH picture above his shoulder, right? Tsem Rinpoche was not as outspoken about this or as rabid in violently protesting this as the New Kadampas and Kelsang Gyatso have. Tsem Rinpoche merely followed his own understanding and heart. An excellent example of Guru devotion in my mind.
