CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Mildred (Joan Crawford) is shocked to find that Veda (Ann Blyth) and Monte (Zachary Scott) had been involved in an affair. Then, in the heat of an argument, Veda shoots Monte with Mildred's gun.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Joan Crawford won an Academy Award for her bravura portrayal of the titular heroine in Mildred Pierce. The original James M. Cain novel concerns a wife and mother who works her way to financial security to provide a rosy future for her beloved daughter, but encounters difficulties and tragedies along the way. Ranald McDougall's screenplay tones down the sexual content, enhancing its film noir value by adding a sordid murder. The film opens with oily lounge lizard Monte Beragon (Zachary Scott) being pumped full of bullets. Croaking out the name "Mildred", he collapses and dies. Both the police and the audience are led to believe that the murderer is chain-restaurant entrepreneur Mildred Pierce (Crawford), who takes the time to relate some of her sordid history. As the flashback begins, we see Mildred unhappily married to philandering Bert Pierce (Bruce Bennett). She divorces him, keeping custody of her two beloved daughters, Veda (Ann Blyth) and Kay (Jo Anne Marlowe). To keep oldest daughter Veda in comparative luxury, Mildred ends up taking a waitressing position at a local restaurant. With the help of slimy real estate agent Wally Fay (Jack Carson), she eventually buys her own establishment, which grows into a chain of restaurants throughout Southern California. Meanwhile, Mildred smothers Veda in affection and creature comforts. She goes so far as to enter into a loveless marriage with the wealthy Monty Beragon in order to improve her social standing; Beragon repays the favor by living the life of a layabout playboy, much to Mildred's dismay -- and possible financial ruin.

I just love that beach house. In its history, it belonged to several famous Hollywood insiders, including the director of this movie, apparently. Zachary Scott was wonderful playing the slimy Monty Beragon. Unlike the book where this character lives, I am glad the character got bumped off at the beginning of the film. It makes for far better storytelling and fits in perfectly with the film noir of the era. Scott, like Jack Carson (Wally), died way too young. He died of a brain tumor in 1965.

I often wonder what the outcome of the murder trial would have been? Would she have been acquitted simply because she was a woman (in the same manner as Lizzie Borden was acquitted due to her gender and the times) who was manipulated and taken advantage of by an older man. She also could've gotten a second degree murder charge since she didnt kill him with premeditation, it was more a spur the moment decision. not to mention she was not the one who brought the gun to the beach house and had no intentions of murdering Monte. Her lawyers could've argue temporary insanity due to a rejection impulse that followed with an out of body experience when she pulled the trigger. Or maybe she would've been charged with first degree murder? What do you all think?

I think when Mildred dropped the gun, it should have discharged and shot off Veda's left tit, then proceed into the bottom of her chin and finally tunneling through her brain and out the skull. As far as the legal implications of this murder, my mind's a blank. Click, click, click. Gosh. No more bullets.
@vladimirenlow4388

Murder 2 sounds about right. The deciding factor would be if Mildred was willing to shell out for a good attorney who could effectively argue for the insanity defense. That's questionable given the circumstances.

Daughter was caught f....ng her mother’s husband then kills him. It’s the 1940’s morals. No “she was lured into it.” All male jury. She fled. She lied to the police. The consensual affair was going on for years. The gun was downstairs so she had to go get it. Unsympathetic defendant. Tried and convicted in the press for sure. Unanimous guilty.

The story is about class. Old money vs new money. Its much more explicit in the book that Veda thinks that Mildred is trash. In the film she even implies that Mildred is passing for White and is actually Black and is naturally inclined to servitude. Monty is old money-even if there's not much actual cash. His name can add dignity to the family.
