CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Veda (Ann Blyth) embarrasses and berates her Mildred (Joan Crawford) for being a waitress.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Joan Crawford won an Academy Award for her bravura portrayal of the titular heroine in Mildred Pierce. The original James M. Cain novel concerns a wife and mother who works her way to financial security to provide a rosy future for her beloved daughter, but encounters difficulties and tragedies along the way. Ranald McDougall's screenplay tones down the sexual content, enhancing its film noir value by adding a sordid murder. The film opens with oily lounge lizard Monte Beragon (Zachary Scott) being pumped full of bullets. Croaking out the name "Mildred", he collapses and dies. Both the police and the audience are led to believe that the murderer is chain-restaurant entrepreneur Mildred Pierce (Crawford), who takes the time to relate some of her sordid history. As the flashback begins, we see Mildred unhappily married to philandering Bert Pierce (Bruce Bennett). She divorces him, keeping custody of her two beloved daughters, Veda (Ann Blyth) and Kay (Jo Anne Marlowe). To keep oldest daughter Veda in comparative luxury, Mildred ends up taking a waitressing position at a local restaurant. With the help of slimy real estate agent Wally Fay (Jack Carson), she eventually buys her own establishment, which grows into a chain of restaurants throughout Southern California. Meanwhile, Mildred smothers Veda in affection and creature comforts. She goes so far as to enter into a loveless marriage with the wealthy Monty Beragon in order to improve her social standing; Beragon repays the favor by living the life of a layabout playboy, much to Mildred's dismay -- and possible financial ruin.

Jo Ann Marlowe, that’s the actress. She quit acting when she was a teen, went to college and became a lawyer. She also married, had a daughter and divorced. In 1968, she was involved in a car crash that caused her coma. She was just 32. And yes, she never woke up and spent 22 years on that coma. She never saw her daughter, who was only 8 at the time of the accident, grow up. Jo’s mom cared for her for those 22 years, and died only in 2011. Very sad story.

Some people don't understand why Joan Crawford won the Oscar. She was far far from the persona she had at MGM. When you put her movies side by side you can see it. Lovec her movies but really love her 1940's, Warner movies. She was a GREAT actress in this point of her career.

There was an extra charge about Crawford's portrayal of a woman fighting to better herself. Mayer had dropped her, letting her go to his rival Jack Warner at a quarter of her MGM salary. Gossip was treating her as a has-been hangover from the silent-to-sound transition 15 years before. Her Metro vehicles had become too slow, stately and slushy as she tried to hang on to her youth while reaching for more class. At Warners she was given the noir treatment, playing the working class mother of a teen daughter and hustled along by Michael Curtiz. She still has that faintly mechanical air, relying on her eyes and incapable of changing her expression within a shot, but Warner kept the shots short. The film made folks stop saying Joan was washed up, but it set her on the path towards mad-witchdom that Hollywood compelled so many actresses with strong personalities to tread as the years piled up, ending in such self-parodies as 'Trog'. Still, Crawford would doubtless have hated forced retirement more.

Vida is absolutely beautiful, and blessed (unfairly) with an exquisite singing voice, but she is the demon-child from hell. Mildred's love for her, so typical of a co-dependent type in love with a narcissist, is so heartbreaking in this film. I liked the HBO miniseries as well (I adore Kate Winslet, and Guy Pearce is great, and Evan Rachel Wood steals the show as Vida) but of course the Crawford film is a masterpiece of 1940s melodrama.

Interesting comment. So sorry you were throttled so much. I was raised in the 50's and as a child was spanked almost daily, mostly by my mom, and I was a good kid! My elementary school at the time had one of those big paddles for miscreant kids. That being said, my parents were very loving, and as I would say, 'generous without being indulgent'. It was a good childhood. Still, years later, I jokingly chided my mom about the daily corporal punishment, and her response was classic of the times: "I NEVER spanked you! I just cuffed you around when I needed to!"

I think corporal punishment was very much in use in Poland in the early 20th century, let alone during the war(s) and post-war periods. I can relate to how bad it feels to be punished in this way, no matter the frequency, but the worst memory I have is seeing my grown-up mom pinned down and smacked by my grandparents. I was too young to even know what that was about and I only saw it once, but that image is etched in my memory for good.

Fun Fact: Ann Blyth who played Veda had a hard time playing mean and evil because she’s a singer, and never had a temper, so Joan Crawford coached her and that’s how their friendship began on set of Mildred Pierce. Bette Davis was Michael Curtis’ (Director’s) original choice to play Mildred in Mildred Pierce, but she turned down the role, and after Joan Crawford’s signed at Warners it was not Michael Curtis’s choice for Crawford, however, onset they did not get along with each other until the end of shooting, and when he accepted the Academy Award for her. (It was also however, when Davis’ and Crawford’s rivalry/feud began.)

The house used for filming the exteriors of « Mildred Pierce » was on Latigo Bay Road in Malibu, just below and in front of the Tivoli Cove Apartments, where I happened to live for a few months - was set up to live - so that I could casually meet and begin teaching a little boy who, despite having never before met (let alone dated!) his mother, happened to be my « Mildred Pierce » house washed away in a storm at high tide decades ago

This Great film is another example of brilliant acting by Holywood greats..My Mum was an avid fan of Film Review books of the 40s50s and loved to sit and watch(the films I mean) them with me when I was a child ..This story for some reason reminds me of Megan Markle and her Father.!!!
