Downtown Seattle got its historic buildings. But also modern skyscrapers and redevelopment. No offense to Portland, but I like Downtown Seattle a lot more.

Ooh, wotta magnificent mess! The reason is simple: too many people, too much stuff, too many places, too little room. Lots of apartments and townhouses; even the big boxes and supermarkets are tucked into existing buildings. And the street grid's a bit of a mess; understandable a large part of Warren Ave. was actually 2nd Ave., and Western Ave. changed names at least twice. I did wonder if you found the elevated highway they buried, Boston-style. Maybe next time.

Don't forget that Seattle is squeezed in between a bunch of bodies of water, which creates horrible choke points that can't be fixed, thus why the City of Seattle is situated the way it is now both on the City Streets, AND on the freeways in terms of traffic and in general.
