Crossed that bridge 100s of times. One night , at the top. A sea of red lights. Get up there, a rough looking man was sitting on the edge. Police all around. I had my top down. Man looked me right in the eyes. I’ll never forget it. I think they got him down safe.

The original Sunshine Skyway Bridge was a twin span steel cantilever truss style bridge was destroyed by a freighter on May 9, 1980 when the ship struck a column on the southbound bridge resulting in the loss of 35 people sending cars including a Greyhound bus plunging into Tampa Bay. The fishing piers parallel to southbound traffic are remnants of the original bridge

A day like this gives the bridge an eerie, foreboding look. But when you make it over, you feel a lot better. And good old US 19, all the way from Erie, PA, down here to it's terminus a short distance away. The Jersey barriers look like Darlington Raceway.

It doesn't need bad weather to look foreboding. Some say that bridge is haunted, and I wouldn't be surprised one bit if it was. That fencing and those red call boxes aren't primarily there for broken *vehicles,* if you know what I mean (and I'm pretty sure you do). Add in the reason the present structure even exists in the first place--you can listen to the Summit Venture's Mayday call on here if you're that morbidly curious enough--that particular patch of the Bay has seen a ton of human tragedy. Even as a passenger, I get the willies crossing that beast.

I've always been intimidated by the look of this bridge, but viewing this video makes it seem not much different than some other bridges in this area, that I have been on. Thank you for posting this, as it definitely helps to give me the courage to drive on this bridge (one day 😉😉).

Welcome Mike to my neighborhood ( Seminole). Normally you see the sunshine driving the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Looking for more Florida content in the next videos. Have a good one while in Florida.

Didn’t know that they put up more fencing on the sunshine skyway. Thanks for the info about that.

This bridge looks great though it will look better post pavement. It is not too far from busch gardens though. The beautiful panorama view of the river below is fascinating

There are presently no traffic signals nor rapid red flashing lights for the drawbridge section of the Lake Pontchartrain Causewy.

This is a good public service to make this video so people visiting the area can decide whether they can handle driving over it. I knew there was no way in hell I could cross that bridge and I went around Tampa Bay even though I still had to cross a causeway but at least that wasn't high off the ground. The irony was my hotel was just on the other side of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge but I drove at least an hour out of the way to take 41 South/19 (?) - the streets, actually, because 41 is essentially a boulevard - instead. I also missed my turn on Hillsborough because it's not conspicuously marked. Thankfully some millenials in a neighborhood bar were kind enough to give me excellent directions to 41 South to Bradenton. I could see the bridge from my hotel and had to laugh. Beautiful to look at though.

Amazes me that a major metro area in America can survive with an interstate with only two lanes in each direction.

It’s not the only bridge in the area and it’s not directly in downtown Tampa

It would be much better if it was a real suspension bridge, instead of the ugly cable-stayed bridge it is currently.

Kinda lame (a toll revenue cash grab I assume) that the bulk of the bridge is technically in Hillsborough county, but the ends only touch Pinellas (north) or Manatee (south) counties.
