Well I’m a supporter of Miles College Band and Professor Snipes. Miles sounded excellent and danced exceptionally, I could go on and on about the music 🎶 and students. Job well played and done❤😊

Miles sounded very good. Shame took me back to the 97-98 years during Mr. Means. Miles sounded great. The indoor stadiums suck and they are not made for marching bands at all.

Well I like it. It’s the only college band competition judged by real band directors. So if it’s a joke, it’s definitely a bad joke. 😊

As a VSU Alumni and former head drum major (1998-2003…yep I marched 6 years), I can honestly say that I LOVED MILES’ SHOW! It really gave me HBCU Band! Yes, there were mistakes in this show, but that’s no different from all 4 bands that performed. With all of this said, I’m not sure how they were the winner according to the adjudicator’s rubric card. The areas that were judged, I don’t see Miles winning. Again, I’m not saying that Miles sucked. I feel that Miles was VERY GOOD! Although they appeared to be a copy of JSU…from the intro, to the DM’s to the Floating of the M downfield… if you know HBCU band, then you understand what I’m saying… but even with all of that they were still good. My adjudication score issues are: 1. Miles beat VSU in percussion. This is literally impossible. Go back and listen (not to the winds) to percussion in both shows. The level to which VSU’s percussion played was professional vs Miles elementary level of percussion. The tonal parts, the major rudiments and techniques in sticking of the VSU snares…the entire section. Not to mention the fact that VSU did an entire Drum Block in the middle of the show. Going from a pop beat to a Latin beat mid song and the list goes on… there is literally absolutely no way on Gods green earth that Miles won percussion. 2. Drum Majors - From the very top of the show the VSU Drum Majors were precise and in control of the FIELD COMMAND of the band. All of this is on the judges’ score card. On The opening fanfare the VSU Drum Majors (Commanders of Troy) conducted a 35 count (10 measure) fanfare with a precise, sharp and controlled 4/4 pattern WITH MACE. That went into continuing to CONDUCT THE INTRO to the drill song. Our head drum major got on the stand and conducted the ballad. VSU also had a FULL UNIFORM CHANGE MID SHOW and came back on the field in ALL WHITE UNIFORMS! VSU also did a Drum Major intro that included the full band and continued their use of smoke 💨 in the DM intro. VSU also had a 4 count conducting portion in the middle of the drill. Miles DRUM MAJORS did not come ANYWHERE CLOSE TO THIS and on the score card Miles DMs Beat VSU’s DM’s… LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE! 3. VSU beat MILES In auxiliary! Understandable for everyone I’m sure. 4. Marching - Go back and watch the crisp knee lifts and pointed toes of VSU. Now the drill designs of MILES were very good 👍🏽 in my opinion, but the marching of Miles was poor. I feel like the VSU designs could have been better, but our actual MARCHING was better. 5. Musicality - I feel that the musicality was about even. Not from an actuality standpoint though. VSU struggled in places musically that were extremely noticeable. Miles also struggled musically as well, but not as noticeable. This is why I NEVER HAVE AGREED with the saying that “size doesn’t matter.” Let’s stop the CAP! Yes, when it comes to sound, size DEFINITELY matters. All bands have moments where there are flaws in the musicality. But the more people you have the more it can be camouflaged. This is not an excuse at all. With this being said, both bands sounded good to me. But Miles winning in musicality is something I can accept. Even though I feel that VSU sounded great! 6. Miles was definitely LOUDER than VSU. 7. GENERAL EFFECT - From top to bottom the VSU General Effect was completely better than Miles. From the DM intro all the way down to the visual clear auxiliary transitions…. To the drum block… to auxiliary uniform change to drum major uniform change… Miles show was no more than a normal HBCU HALFTIME SHOW. It was not a competition show at all. Again, I love Miles show… just according to the judges rubric I don’t see how they won.

I was also confused last year when JSU lost to A&T. But knowing what the judges are looking for as far as score card I now understand why. I don’t agree but I’m saying I now know why.

@@1971phenomWhen it comes to marching, PMM was absolutely on point (Shouts out to THUNDER!!!!) way to march it on out. In contrast, VSU’s performance seemed to blur the line between marching and walking, as well as between actively playing instruments and simply holding them. This discrepancy was quite noticeable. I acknowledge VSU's strengths, but their performance seemed to lose cohesion midway through. While the drum major did direct a ballad, it was baffling to see them leave the field mid-performance for a wardrobe change-who does that? I was genuinely puzzled. Perhaps I’m a bit old-fashioned, but it also raised questions about who was leading the band during their absence. The auxiliary performers were exceptional but overly dominant, which detracted from the overall presentation. Sometimes, less is best-a single feature twirler might have been a more effective choice. Just a thought.

Based on what JSU was judged on last year I don’t see it in Miles performance which would’ve made them Band of the Year or even a nominee. There was no real drill, no percussion break, nor did the drum majors conduct the band. These were key things last year on the judgement sheet. This performance was very underwhelming and lackluster.
