"Kind of Blue" is usually in the top five, and often first, in most jazz critics' lists of the best jazz albums of all time. "Kind of Blue" is considered a landmark album that helped spread the modal jazz style and influenced many other artists. The album features simple melodies, modal harmony, and improvisation. One of the techniques used in "So What" is the call-and-response technique used in blues and gospel music. Call-and-response is a musical conversation where a statement by a soloist (the call) is immediately followed by a reply from another musician or group (the response). Here, the bass gives the call, and the response is the "so what" played by the horns and the piano. This is one of the ways in which "So What" is kind of blue.

Yeah, Nick," just enjoy the sound". I hope more young people open their minds and hearts to all the diverse tracks you cover. There's a lifetime of soul food just waiting to be discovered by us all. I believe music is the highest art, and your appreciation and understanding makes me fall in love with you, every time. Great reaction , again. "Oh, man" indeed! ❤🇦🇺

This song proves that you don't have to be a jazz afficionado to recognize true greatness and appreciate fantastic musicianship. And what terrific support Miles receives from his fellow (also legendary) bandmates! Thanks kindly for making me feel a whole lot cooler tonight.

Very nice reaction to the music that has been the soundtrack to my life and times. I was just a wee laddie growing up on the Ayrshire coast of Scotland when this record came out. I was also just learning to play the cornet down at the Salvation Army. This music, Jazz and Blues, was stunning to me. There's also John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley amongst other jazz legends on that record. A "supergroup" in rock 'n' roll terms. Louis Armstrong and his Hot 5's were an early example from the 1920's. So for more Miles you might enjoy "Sketches of Spain" if you aren't already familiar with it. Tioraidh an-drasta 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

This is Snoopy as Joe Cool AND it is a bourbon sitting on the table that you don't drink till the song ends... If feelings are shades of color then this is a paint store. Well done gentlemen, well done 👍

This is the Gateway Album to all those people who get into Jazz, but didn't really like it before. Here's some facts about the album. Miles sketched out the beginnings and endings of all the pieces on charts for his band. So what that means is that at the point in SO WHAT when Jimmy Cobb does that fill and the bass player starts walking. EVERYTHING that happens up to the repeat of the beginning phrase for the ending is made up on the spot, flubs and all. These guys were so good at what they did they could do it like this. Miles used the same method on the whole album, and it really shows in the energy in the tracks. This is the biggest selling Jazz album in history, period. It sounds as fresh now as it did in 1959. They really knew how to capture the live vibe of the band. I can put this album on and literally play it non stop. If you're looking for the way into the genre, this is where to start.

I dig the groove in this one and see the noir scene in my mind. It's after the sunset when a detective talks to himself while this plays in the background. By the way, you had a city during the night behind you for so many years and this song fits it perfectly. :) Honestly, I never "look" for jazz, for songs of this genre but most of them hit me deeply whenever I hear them. I'm not sure I ever heard "So What", so massive thanks to you guys! You inspire and widen our musical tastes and that's priceless. IMHO you three have created the best channel on YT when it comes to musical experience.

So, there is hope for your generation after all, lol! Just kidding! I love your reaction. Miles was also a boxer amd a heroin addict who went cold turkey on his own and sweated it out to get off of it. Do yourselves a favor and check out Julian "Cannonball" Adderly's "The Black Messiah" (George Duke compositon), as well as any track off of "Miles Smiles".

An interesting note about this album is that Miles Davis said in his bio that the album was a bit of a failure. He was very proud of it and thought the playing was great. But he said it failed achieve the sound that he was initially going after.

A must-have in any jazz collection. I liken jazz to taking shrooms (so I've heard...) You're going to have techno-color visions. Sometimes, they make sense. Other times, they may be abstract, but they're always cool.

@@mrheem44 Definitely Coltrane first. Not only is that confirmed by any number of reputable sources, you can hear the difference between, first, Coltrane’s tenor sax (lower, richer, fatter sound) and, second, Adderley’s alto sax (higher, piercing, thinner sound)
