Without a doubt, it was the pinnacle of pop radio. In the course of an hour you’d hear a gem like this, heavy rock, an instrumental, some soul and funk, something with a metropolitan country sound, bubblegum, Motown…

"Brandy" and "Dancin' in the Moonlight" are linked in my mind as the epitome of great early 70s music. I think they came out the same year. They're like two bottles of fine, aged wine that should always be enjoyed together.

@@stevecontini5386 It's funny how big the difference is between early-70s music and mid to late-70s music. For me, early 70s was Three Dog Night, Carpenters, Melanie, leftover 60s acts, and a whole lot of one-hit wonders. By the end of the decade, these acts were either totally forgotten or had fallen into disfavor (particularly Carpenters) while disco dominated and new wave was on the rise.

@@rhondaserges5136 Actually, Manilow's "Mandy" was a cover by an earlier song named "Brandy." co-written and performed by a British act by the name of Scott English (hard to get more British than that) in 1971. Manilow decided to cover the song but due to the success of Looking Glass's completely different song in 1972, Manilow - at the advice of his label - changed the name to "Mandy." While Scott English hit only 91 on the US Billboard 100, Manilow hit number one in 1974. The English/Manilow song was covered a lot...by a lot of different acts.

Yeah, this song is absolute perfection. Good catch on Nick's part BTW for catching that intro similarity to that of "Right Down The Line" by the late, great Gerry Rafferty!!!! I had honestly never caught that before myself, so major kudos to Nick for that one. The Jersey Shore sound was typified by this and other classics, such as "Green Onions," "Dancing In The Moonlight" and anything by Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes and John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band. After an unsuccessful album following their debut, lead singer/guitarist Eliot Lurie left the band and was replaced by singer Michael Lee Smith from Atlanta GA and guitarist Richie Ranno, took on a much harder direction and changed their name to *Starz.* You should definitely check out their two biggest songs "Cherry Baby" and "Sing It, Shout It" (but play the 5 1/2 minute full-length album version of that one). You are definitely going to thank me for this later!!

“Brandy”, to me, always sounded like it was set in one of those New England port/ fishing/ formerly whaling towns. Kind of like the town from which the ships sailed in the movie “The Perfect Storm”. If I recall correctly, a lot of Portuguese fishing people settled there, and the lead singer always looked like he had Portuguese heritage, to me. He sounds like he has that accent when he sings. But I’m from the Deep South so what do I know😊
