A development of the original Miles Hawk, known as the Hawk Major, became the first low-wing monoplane to be adopted for elementary flying training by the RAF. The Hawk Major was powered by a 120Hp Gipsy III engine, and featured a number of improvements over the Hawk, including an all-metal engine mounting, modified cowling, and a revised undercarriage.
