They are spending a lot more money on grit but that is the problem we haven’t needed it in recent times. Neither have our closest neighbours and now even though production is ramping up the UK aren’t the only country with this problem in Europe. So the demand for grit and other equipment to deal with these problems out strips supply. UK isn’t the only country that is grinding to a holt in winter, they just don’t report about other countries now days.

No, it isn't normal and this isn't the sort of weather we had when we were young. So don't kid yourself that it is. I never heard of anywhere being flooded at Christmas at any time in my past (I'm 57, obviously a good deal older or in possession of a better memory than you). I've lived both north and south within this country (in 16 locations no less), and never once was I flooded, not have any friends, relatives or colleagues been flooded. So don't claim it's normal. It is not. Neither are storms at the intensity we have now are normal. So don't kid yourself on that score either. The 1987 hurricane was an entirely isolated, freak storm that occurred out of the blue. The first major storm since 1706. So that's once in 280 years. Previously, we used to get a little bit of windy weather in October and again in March. And that was it. Now we get up to several such storms every year. That's not normal at all. Snow falls mostly just after Christmas, but it's not unknown to fall at Christmas. If it was a frequent thing to fall so heavily at Christmas, you wouldn't have so many twits on the road making a hard task of visiting everyone they can think of. Personally, I take the term Christmas holiday at its full meaning - a holiday. That means I visit no one and I don't invite people round. The last thing I want is to be inconvenienced or put anyone else to any inconvenience for the sake of a bit of food and a present I can send by courier. Stay at home, Keep off the roads (50% of people on the road at Christmas in Scotland are over the limit anyway). So definitely best to stay home, keep warm, and leave the visiting until the summer (you're not going to be visited by 3 ghosts just for leaving it until better weather).

Two reasons for flooding: 1. Increased urban development (look at how many houses for sale with Astro turf lawns!!), 2. They do not clear the drainage ditches which causes flooding. In Thailand it can rain for 4 hours solid and never floods BECAUSE drainage is kept clear and clean.

Absolutely correct. In my area the council never clear the leaves away in autumn and then, incredibly, when it rains and snows more in the winter, the drains overflow and it all runs down to the river at the bottom of the hill. This gets flooded and the council and authorities blame it on “climate change”.

@MikePhillips-pl6ov 9 ай бұрын
I lived in Norway many years and it was from 1st October. Not mandatory as such though. I had an old/classic car I took out on sunny dry days in winter with summer/regular tyres. The problem comes if you have an accident in bad weather and have not put snow tyres on. I agree we probably don't need them in most of the UK but useful to have on standby in Scotland and parts of the north. It just means having a second set of wheels with winter tyres to quickly swap over. Or even just a pair, for the front if front wheel drive, or the rear if rear wheel drive. I did that for a car I had, when living in southern England. Front wheel drive with winter tyres. It handled really well on icy days. Their benefit is not just in severe conditions. In fact I left them on all year round. They just wear a little quicker and change the fuel economy a little (my car was very economical on fuel anyway)

That’s the real problem, we just don’t need any of that stuff 99% of the year. So most will not have the gear in their car to deal with it. If you don’t have that sort of gear in your motor in a Montana Winter you’d be an idiot. You could load your car up with all the gear every winter and not use it for five years straight in the UK.

It’s often snowy in Scotland ! My Dad and family always carried ropes, spade etc in winter in England …. Let alone Scotland .. be prepared, it’s likely to snow or rain hard !

Not really, but it would be nice, as it hasn't snowed hard over the UK in 30 years. That's when it used to be 'often' when a white Christmas was the norm. @@elizabethstockdale2784

No one old enough to remember the 1970's 😂 these children stories of bad weather has to stop. Winter, and as weird as some might think this weather is. This is only a smuttering of snow in winter that use to snow for weeks on end not a few days FFS grow up

Honestly, how pathetic is this. You would think we're a tropical island the way people react to a small scattering of snow. As for local authorities not gritting roads when they know the snows coming..... I want my council tax back, you lot couldn't run the length of yourselfs never mind a council.

In Ilford, Essex we've had winds, I don't want snow because my crutches or wheelchair don't work with snow and my private landlord never put heating in so I am housebound in a freezer.
