There is a code to get Shin Akuma in the PS1 version of Alpha 2 and I remember it to this day. Highlight Akuma, hold select the press D, R, R, D, L, D, L, D, R, R, R then hit and attack button to select Akuma. Christ knows why I remember that of all the codes from my childhood but there it is 20 plus years later.

(A long but good read) Max i honestly feel like this is some of your best work. Not even kidding. Just as this video is taking Akuma back to his roots, it is also taking me back to my roots with fighting games. I am 39 years old which im sure is pretty darn close to where you are at. Growing up in the 90s and experiencing all of this first hand and in real time is a special kind of feeling that these Akuma Legacy videos is giving me right now. I started with SF2 and from then on never really quit. Sure i would take breaks for extended periods, but I would always come back to fighting games one way or another, even if it wasnt street fighter. Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct and Soul Calibur would persuade some of my time but they were never quite the same. Streetfighter had a unique pull and through the years I played almost every version of it at some point. But I sure remember the mystery of Akuma and how it was before the internet took off. If you didnt have access to Street Fighter cabs (as it was for me growing up), You would get a glimpse of a strange character youve never seen on a box and wonder who it could be. Maybe you would get a screenshot in a magazine of "Akuma", with a vague odd backstory (Ryu and Ken combined into one essence), along with the code to select him, for an arcade cab that you do not have (and never had) the access to, so can never know for sure (and in fact the whole thing could be fake). Then maybe the next week a video shown on the weekly videogames show on TV, good thing I usually tape it using a VHS. Now I can (and will) watch it back again multiple times and also press the pause button (on the unit because theres no remotes for this one) to try and catch a good look at him and look at his animations. If its real then he looks super strong. He is definitely Ryu and Ken mixed together. Then years later being on vacation abroad and seeing an X-men vs Street fighter cab for the very first time and seeing that Akuma is playable in this game. So you eagerly stuff some quarters in to play and get destroyed on the first opponent because the arcade has jacked the difficulty up. You still finally got to play as Akuma though, and he was just as cool as you always imagined. As time goes on and the world evolves, things that were once a mystery to you for years with only breadcrumbs to sustain you, are now pretty common knowledge. Word begins to travel faster and on a global scale like never before. You can still remember the times though growing up, where sometimes you would read a review of a game over and over in a magazine, even though you could never play it, simply because the artwork or the style or theme of the game was so damn cool, you just couldnt get enough of it (Darkstalkers 3 for me). Mysteries would take literally years to unfold as you slowly broadened your experiences and got that little bit more information month by month, year by year. But that time back in the 90s was an incredible time for fighting games (and video games as a whole), and it holds a lot of fond memories for me. Large parts of my personality that were formed back in those times are still with me 30 years later. Street Fighter is just one of them. I can tell that you have the same passion and fond memories of these times as I do. It shows in your enthusiasm and care for your subject matter. It is wildly evident in this series of videos. This series has really been like a time capsule for me. Thank you Max for sharing your passion as you do. These thoughts and feelings are exactly what I needed tonight. Once all of this is done (Akuma Legacy), you should really put these videos into one long supercut. It could easily become the definitive video history of Akuma, and his impact on Fighting Games in general. I will end with a little part of my history, as a lifelong fighting game player (and mostly not good, until this last year). When I started playing fighting games. I could only really play as Shotos. Every other archetype felt kind of off to me and It didnt feel natural, so I stuck with Ryu, Ken and occasionally Sagat. On the release of SF4, I vowed I would main a character who wasnt a shoto (and definitely no fireballs), for the first time ever. Ive kept my "No Shotos" rule until today, some 17 years later. Now with SF6 Akuma just days away now, I decided now was the time to go back to my roots and main a Shoto character, and obviously it had to be Akuma. That mysterious character that would pop into my life only sporadically, but at the same time has left a lasting impression and has in part defined a significant portion of my life. We have come full circle and Im headed back to my roots as a fighting game player. I think that Akuma is the perfect representation of what that time was like, and he is one of the central pillars that make the story so wonderful to talk about, and a true pleasure to have experienced. Thanks again Max! We are lucky to have you!!

Street Fighter Alpha 3 was so much fun, I remember finally getting to play it for the first time in the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary game collection in 2018/2019. I actually replayed in recent years with Akuma climbing up the arcade mode until I reached Bison and landed that Raging demon defeating him after several attempts which felt so satisfying. Everything about that game was so charming, the sprites, the presentation, art style, etc. Is it the best Street Fighter game? Not even close, but still a great game. If you have not played it for whatever reason I highly recommend it you do so.

Wonkiness aside, Street Fight Alpha 3 is still one of the best SFs. If you want to see how _Street Fighter_ it can be, play A-Ryu vs. A-Ryu. I still much MUCH prefer SFA3 to SFA2. The latter is a slow, boring turtle fest where you lost 40-60% life for standig up. SFA3 has its own bullshit, but at least it's faster paced (though CC infinites are death), has a much larger/better cast, and IMO is simply more fun to play, especially by one's self. Also, shoutout to the Saturn version for being the best version. It doesn't have _quite_ as many modes as the PSP version nor the CvS2 ports, but it's the most expansive while also being the closest to the arcade, last i checked.

The Dramatic Battle stuff at the end reminded me of my time playing World Tour on the PSP version many moons ago, and while I had my own Akuma jacked up with stats due to how World Tour works, I still remember getting scrambled so many times with the back-to-back reverse dramatic battles in that very last stage which ended in a fight against **TWO** Shin Akumas. Man, how time flies by.

I was never able to play the Alpha series (only got it recently in a bundle sale on PSN), but man I remember seeing the ads in GamePro when it was releasing. The Alpha movie was awesome, wondering if Ryu had a brother and if both were related to Akuma (who was amazing for how little he was in the film), and then watching an Evil Ryu campaign in Max 3 recently really put a smile on my face. Thanks for doing this Legacy series, Max. It's so much fun watching and learning the history of the character and games.

Anyone remember playing Alpha 2 on the SNES and Alpha 3 on the PS1? I never liked how the 30th Anniversary Collection doesn't include all the versions of Alpha 3. It would've been great if it included Ultra Street Fighter II (which is still stuck on the Switch) and Alpha 3 MAX (which is still stuck on the PSP). Then there's also Hyper Street Fighter Alpha that's on the PS2 Alpha Anthology.

✋ Those are the only ways I ever got to play them. Broke the "R" button on a SNES controller with how much I played Alpha 2. Trying to figure out either how to hold the controller or which supers I would just never be able to do at full strength was interesting b/c of the Level 1/2/3 = 1/2/3 buttons pressed for a super thing.

Would have been great indeed to have ALL the games, but alas- Capcom chose not to pay the license that would've been required to emulate Sony's hardware and stuck to the arcade games which are made on Capcom's own hardware, no extra cost involved there. Sad that they cheapend out, but them's the breaks.

Alpha 3 Max on PSP has even ANOTHER secret Reverse Dramatic Battle mode. I *think* you unlock it by finishing World Tour then hold L while selecting R. Dramatic. The difference ? Enemies have infinite supers, and a brand new nightmarish set of duos to fight (not gonna spoil it but the last two or three matches are plain unfair). Surprised nobody mentions it, but it's probably for the best. Good luck.

10:26 I noticed this also during the steaming, that the CPU Shin Akuma's AI is bugged out somehow: he only does jump mid punches which clearly should have been air fireballs instead (AI didn't use the double air fireball even for a single time). This reminds me of a weird detail that's present in I think Alpha 2 and/or 3 where the Raging Demon has different damage values based on who you use it on? Where the more 'sin' the victim has committed the more it hurts them? So Sakura gets off easy while Dictator gets ruined by it, and Gen uniquely has a bonus damage value of zero because he canonically survived the Demon once by 'emptying his soul' before it struck.
