The whole "asset flipping is bad" argument doesn't hold water to me. I agree with Max when he says it matters more if the gameplay is actually fun and if the end product is good. Asset flipping is not inherently bad. Look at a game like Legend of Zelds Majora's Mask. That game is LITERALLY all asset flips from Ocarina of Time and many people (including myself) consider it to be a great entry in the series. I've even heard people say it's their favorite despite containing mostly assets from Ocarina of Time. I'm excited for Nightreign because I think the concept of the gameplay sounds neat, new, experimental, and refreshing. If it's bad, it will be bad because the gameplay is bad not because of the assets like Max stated.
@valeoncat1320 сағат бұрын
Yeah that entire rhetoric is an offshoot from gamers who don't actually understand how games are made, and while their heart is in the right place, they often forget devs are people who like their jobs and try to make the best product they can WITHIN limitations. If making entirely new assets weren't resource intensive and deadlines weren't so strict, obviously most devs would opt to make new ones. But that's not the reality of game dev.

This is not gonna be infinite lol. BR have a long life because it's PVP, you're not fighting AI enemies, real people behave differently each run and it's always kinda new. But this is PVE, once you beat all bosses a few times, what's the point of playing more? And they won't add new bosses, because that costs money, and they would rather use those assets for their next game. Also, this seems different from other roguelite games, because there is very little progression between runs, just those relics I guess. Normal roguelite games can't be beat for many runs, because your character is too weak. It seems in Nightreign you can beat it after a few runs if you're good and get some decent gear. The other option is for them to have regular updates with new maps, bosses, new gear, etc for like 20$. And I don't know who wants that, I know I don't

Nightreign gives the vibe of instead of playing as your soulsborn character, you're instead playing as a minor soulsborn boss or an elite enemy, because abilities and animations are a bit extra than what players usually get, but still human sized and a specific character. The thing that will decide whether or not the game has good longevity is the size of the roster and if characters have some sort of long term progression so that you benefit from picking a character you like and sticking with it. Edit: I'm also with Max on the addition of PvP to this game, Soulslike PvP really has never become much more than a gimmick to the series since its very inception and the fact that this isn't a PvP experience is a big part of why Nightreign gets more of a benefit of the doubt from me in terms of having a reason to exist, otherwise we really are just trying to muscle in on Fortnite territory and there are MORE than enough PvP BR games out there, keep this as a PvE experience so they can focus on making it interesting without the desperate need for constant tweaking and minute balancing that PvP issues always bring up.

I have seen everyone compare this to Borderlands and other games.. But the closest thing I can attach this to; is the long forgotten Castlevania Harmony of Despair. In which you jump into classic maps with characters from every 2D installment, and you then have to essentially play a co-op level of castlevania. This includes fighting enemies and bosses from every Castlevania, and equipping items and weapons from chests found throughout. I believe the level is also slowly closing in around the centre which is normally a boss arena. I remember thinking how neat of an idea it was at the time, but the major killer was the playerbase. Because people felt like it was a knockoff of the OG titles, they all eventually fled back to the original titles. This made what was essentially a co-op experience, a complete ghost town. Which is entirely possible here. Regardless of how much this game could be soloable, this was built from the ground up to be a social experience. If that community dies down in favour of just replaying the original games again, this will probably go right along with it.
@DillonMeyer12 сағат бұрын
So I have a feeling the game is going to be similar in flow to Returnal. You'll do a run, get lore and unlocks as you play. Each run, you'll most likely get closer and closer to the true goal, defeating the Nightlord. Doesn't matter if you win or lose, you'll be making some sort of meta progress, in addition to learning boss mechanics and moves so you can get better at the game on top of the new things you get in successive runs.

I love this idea. Maybe it doesn't work and from soft can learn something. Maybe it's a hit and creates a franchise that other game studios feverishly attempt to copy and emulate. Either way I think it will make from soft stronger and allow them to stretch their creative muscles. I'm not sure why there are so many naysayers when people have regularly and routinely praised the innovation that from soft has made in the past with faster and frenetic combat in Bloodborne, open world dark souls in elden ring, and a substantial change in the combat system with sekiro. Each of those games has their issues sure, but not a one of them failed to do what they set out to do. Nightreign is surely more out there and innovative and therefore more risky but from soft is in a position of strength where they can handle a failure if that's what it amounts to. If not then the world will no doubt be overrun with multiplayer roguelike soulslike clones and from soft will have set another trend. I say let them cook.

There are bound to be clauses to increase the game's risk and reward; I'd also bet on higher difficulty including new forms and movesets for bosses.

It sounds structurally alot like the game ravenswatch. Only with more variety due to the landscape and bosses changing each time. The core ganeplay is already rock solid so putting it into a new framework is a cool experiment as a side project. Definitely gonna try it

Aside from the talk of Nightreign, it’s pretty much staple if not tradition to always watch Vaati after playing a From game. Its like having a drink after you’re finished eating

Great video. I’m personally bummed by this news after the initial hype of the trailer. But happy for those who like this type of game. I’ll at least give it a try when it’s on sale.

@7:35 I agree. That's the one thing that is a small turnoff for me and why I probably won't spend a lot of time playing this. One of my favorite things about souls games is the customization and custom builds.

One of the pcgamer articles referenced the creation of street fighter 2 turbo, and I feel like Nightreign is in the same boat. They saw what the modders were doing, and they decided to take their own crack at it as the official developer. I really want to call it Elden Ring super turbo.

If anything, From needed something remote enough to the main franchises but still a guarenteed success, so they can get the new recruits from the recent expansion of the studio up to speed asap, the new mechanics experimentation is just the icing on the cake. One game with minimal new lore and art asset needed, but included most if not all important mechanics through out the souls like history, running on the most recent engine, with a big enough open world, is just perfect for that.

I think the balance aspect that you’re worried about won’t be too bad. There are graces, meaning that our flasks will be refilled. It will get harder as it progresses since we lose graces, but I think it will be pretty fair

The funny thing is, I'm pretty sure this game will have it's own lore. Like Vaati mentioned, the characters will have their own stories. I can also see Limvale (don't remember the name of the new map so correct me if I'm wrong) having it's own unique lore to discover.

this has the potential to be HUGE. roguelikes/lites have been a hot commodity for sometime, and one with elden ring money and appeal behind it has near infinite potential.
@WarrenValion21 сағат бұрын
I don't play rougelikes or multiplayer games, but I think this looks pretty sick and I am super down for devs to try smaller more experimental titles. They also said it would cost around the price of SotE, so anywhere between 30-50 bucks is right on the money

The thought process is if the movement and formula response is well received then future games get a improvement to a lot of there systems and gather a larger crowd.

To be 100% honest, i REALLY wanted the multiplayer aspect of Elden Ring to be this. Maybe not necessarily the 15 minute boss rushish element, but if it plays well maybe i will enjoy that as well. Im one of those gamers that truly loves co-op games. To be able to share gaming moments with others with a common goal is an impactful thing for me. All the pvp battle royale games have never really been my thing. I play from time to time but in general i feel im heavier on the side of Coop pve over coop pvp or just general pvp.

I'm cautiously optimistic. A rogue-like actually seems like a pretty natural progression from a Souls game for a spin off. And they have the shot to make this kind of what if scenario game where we could maybe see fights that weren't in the base game. Give us consort Godwyn, super Saiyan Melina with the open eye, etc. The potential is there for this to be really cool so I'm excited. I just for cross play.
@chainclaw0721 сағат бұрын
14:20 Does Elden ring have crossplay? if not do you want this product to be released 7 months later to achieve it? even IF ER has crossplay, the multiplayer experience is wholly different and therefore the netcode might be underwhelming - which means they're limiting it to the same systems...

i like how you could approach the new game solo but the main bosses that are new being balanced around three people makes me a little anxious to hop in during the period between release and a balancing patch

Reminder that Miyazaki is working on something else guys. This is sort of a side project to experiment with. It makes sense that they’re reusing assets.

I think it's great they are trying and experimenting with new stuff. Even if it is Fromsoft's first real miss, innovation and learning would lead to further evolved ideas.
@Sir_SlimbreadКүн бұрын
The "Reused Assets=Bad" Crowd is so annoying. Sure, in some cases reusing assets is lazy, but I don't think these people realize every sequel to every game ever has reused at least 25% of the assets from a previous game(unless there's like a 10+ year, and a console generation or 2 between games). If devs had to make all new assets for every new game all games would take significantly longer. On another note... I fully agree with your Multiplayer Fromsoft opinion(because I share it exactly). I'd be down to co-op a Souls game with some family or friends, but I have absolutely no desire to PvP. I play all Fromsoft Games in Offline Mode, because there's nothing worse than trying to play the game, then out of nowhere some dickhead spawns in, with the most meta PvP build possible, and kills you. If Souls Games didn't have the Offline Option I wouldn't play them.
@Limxuv19 сағат бұрын
I'm pretty excited about a fromsoft roguelite because of how rich the world of elden ring is and what they have to draw from but I'm also wary of how it could fail with the execution of such a drastic shift in genre

I can kinda get why the lore heads would complain about DS bosses showing up, but from a gameplay aspect I don't see the problem. One thing I have heard people wishing for is a kind of "boss rush mode" a way to refight fun battles as much as we want with different builds and this kind of gives us it. Do your run fight fun bosses, change your character/relics/whatever and try it all over again as much as you want with some all stars from previous games. If there was a game type to do the asset flip the roguelike is THE place to do it openly and without shame.
@DarohaRavenholm11 сағат бұрын
Thankfully, in an interview with Nightreign's director, Ishizaki, he states that the in-game reason that DS bosses are in the here is because they were pulled from other worlds by the Night Lord. It's worded somewhat ambiguously, but it seems like there is a True Night Lord whose power is why the space Limveld exists in is so unstable. EDIT: Didn’t realize Vaati addressed this, someone was talking over the video when i typed this up, and commented before going back to hear what I missed lol.

Man...when you have to explain ppl that Counter Strike and DotA started as free mods, made by community members....we old :( And yes, DotA was a WC3 map, which spawned a huge DotA clone time, with LoL right in there. The appeal of League, contrary to every other clone was simple. It was aimed at casuals, because you didn't lose your money on death. It's the only real big difference.

My theory is I think their goal is actually just to bring in new players to the souls genre. When u Think about it Roguelike players are only one or so steps away from souls players. We’re not afraid of repetition or difficulty. For me personally the only thing that stops me playing a soulslike is the gameplay. So they create a roguelike to entice me and get me more accustomed to the souls flow. Then the next time they release a souls game. I’m more likely to be into it. The other clue is the presumed budget . Sure they’ve put a lot of cool thought into roguelike gameplay. But all the assets are reused. They’re not REALLY tryna make roguelikes now. Theyre just repurposing what they already have to both profit and market their real games. I think it’s a smart move.
