What I find so intriguing about Akuma in later games, is how he sees fighting. To him, fighting is a religion, and respecting the art is more important than anything. Should an opponent he faces has an unfair advantage he will spare a person that respects martial arts like him and can improve. In a way he sort of became an unwanted mentor figure to Ryu. His nature and ambitions are often misunderstood. He is NOT a generic bad guy, but a warrior that holds to a code of honor with morals. Now make no mistake he’s no less of a bad guy, and I’m not going to say his actions are justified, I’m just offering an interesting side to the character. And it’s not just in Street Fighter but in Tekken 7, Akuma reveals to Heihachi he was sent by Kasumi to kill him and Kazuya. When Heihachi questions: “If you were sent to kill me, why wait until now?” Akuma answers: “I was merely waiting for you to become stronger.” Akuma is many things, but you can’t say he isn’t honorable.

Akuma was one helluva inclusion in SF and the other games back then. Him being a secret in CotA and Alpha 1 just added more to the mistique surrounding him. BUT his inclusion in X-Men CotA, wasn't the first crossover, SNK beat Capcom to the punch earlier by adding Ryo from Art of Fighting as a secret boss in Fatal Fury Special, then a younger Geese became the secret boss in Art of Fighting 2 in 94 as well, in fact it made both games part of the same canon in a really cool way. Not too long after those crossovers we had the first KoF.

Wasn’t it Reptile or Mr.Karate that was the first hidden secret character for fighting games? And yea seeing someone do the Akuma secret code at the arcade was pretty cool. Not having the internet to ruin and spoil things was awesome.
@OddballEddie4 ай бұрын
Good question, from what I recall, Reptile was a secret fight in MK1 but not selectable. And I think it depends on the version of AoF1 when it comes to Mr .Big and Mr.Karate being selectable in versus mode, I think you needed to reach them in order to use them in versus. On the Neogeo you could unlock Ryo in Fatal Fury Special, it was a complicated process and you needed a memory card in the Neogeo, reach the Ryo fight, etc. It was a huge hassle... And a huge amount of money to buy the Neogeo, FFS and a Memory Card, even back in the day. But Ryo was OP as hell. Around that time lots of games were at least adding secret boss fights. Fatal Fury Special had Ryo, AoF2 had young Geese, Samurai Shodown 2 had Kuroko (the referee), SSF2 had Akuma, MK1 had Reptile, MK2 had Jade, Smoke and Noob and so on. Good times.

I had no idea whatsoever what I did differently to make him appear. Found out later it was just not losing a match. What an awesome surprise it was back then. And I like how Capcom put up the code to play as Akuma after beating him and letting the credits run. Also, I found that when using him the AI is a sucker for getting hit by his three hit Fireball standing up after a hard knockdown.

But it was worth learning. You could catch so many people off guard back then in the arcades.
