Bought this sight unseen based on your review, due to the cheap price and the fact it really seems to be "an FM synth for fans of subtractive synthesis"! I think this just might be my go to when I want to quickly introduce FM sounds (although I do wish there were alternate skins... that orange... man..). Aside from the color choice they really got the UI right, instruments should be immediate like this rather than feel like a scientific experiment. Not sure why everyone does 4 operator synths when the legendary DX7 where it all started was based on 6 op algos, but then again if I want an authentic DX7 emulation I go for Plogue OPS7. OPX-4 on the MPC is also great -- there is a VST version but I have not tried it yet.

I've been hoping for a characterful FM synth that could replace FM4 on my iPad for quite a while. FM Zone finally nails it; with the ease of use of FM4, and does dirty/characterful as well as it does smooth.

A truly lovely synth, but the 5 voice polyphony limit is just *stupid.* It's not even "charmingly retro" or anything like that, since the first "mainstream" FM synth, the Yamaha DX7, had 16 note polyphony and that was in *1983* !!!
