Hey Miles! I work as a conductor on the Empire Builder route. My territory is from Winona, MN to St Cloud, MN and St Cloud to Minot, ND. I loved your California Zephyr video here. Many many times I have been in your situation and been the conductor to have to tell the passengers how late they are, etc. I am glad you made the trip. I hope to see you on the Builder again. Take a trip with the new “Chargers” as the engines. It’s everyday now. And by the way, I loved your recent video about the unique diners around Boston! Love ya Miles and Jackson!

That's awesome, thank you so much for watching! That's gotta be tough to be the bearer of bad news like that - I think our Zephyr crew handled it really well. They were constantly communicating, even when it seemed like no one knew what was going on.

@@MilesinTransit Unfortunately Amtrak runs on tracks it doesn't own, the freight railroads own most of the tracks. The railroad dispatchers also know who puts butter on their bread, and it isn't Amtrak. While Amtrak may seem as if they wait for every freight train, you may be amazed freight trains wait for Amtrak as well.

Grand Junction, CO is called such because of it being the junction of the Gunnison and Colorado Rivers in the Grand Valley. The Grand part refers to the upper Colorado River's historical name. In 1921, Colorado representative Edward T. Taylor petitioned the Congressional Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce to rename the Grand River as the upper Colorado. The stretch of Interstate 70 through the Glenwood Canyon is 15 miles, was completed in 1992, is indeed an engineering marvel considering the extremely difficult terrain and the sharper than normal corners it required. And the dam you saw is the Grand Valley Diversion Dam which was built between 1913 and 1916. Glenwood Springs station opened in 1904 and was made with both brick and sandstone from the Fryingpan River. Glenwood Springs is named after Glenwood, Iowa because a founder's wife named Sarah had a hard time adjusting to the frontier life, and so in an attempt to make her more comfortable, persuaded the founders to rename it Glenwood Springs from Defiance in honor of her hometown.

This is gonna be a long one, so I totally understand if you ignore this. TLDR: I first want to put out, I am a huge fan of Miles in Transit. 5PM EST Wednesday is my favorite thing ever. You have inspired some of my planned trips (Greyhound to Boston, Amtrak to Providence--your points run was very great). You are a very influential person within the transit online world. Watching least used Amtrak, great races, "apparently a trip reports", stupid deviationfests or random content is just so iconic w/ you. So now that I have put this out, here is really why I am here. I want to talk Middlesex County person to Middlesex County person. You being from Cambridge, MA a very well transit connected city has made you such an expert on what transit should look like in neighboring cities/close suburbs. I resided outside of Framingham, MA a while back. I'm pretty sure you know what I am talking about. You made a blog post on it in 2017 (where you gave it a 7--I was incredibly disappointed that we didn't fare better but at least we were better than back bay) and have created multiple MWRTA posts. Back to Framingham Station, it is incredibly terrible. For one of the busiest commuter rail stations as well as one served by Amtrak it deserves more. However, it doesn't seem like Framingham is doing anything. Similarly, MWRTA operates minibuses around the MetroWest area. Supposedly. these buses have a schedule, but they seem to show up when they do like SEPTA trains. They also operate microtransit. Me personally, in theory believes in microtransit however it doesn't work in practice. It is too reliable and, in most places, where it is effective it is too costly. I truly believe that microtransit doesn't have a future in Framingham. What could they do to improve this? Take Newton MA. It borders Boston so some villages are covered by the GLD. It also has 3 commuter rail stops. Alongside that, MBTA runs buses into here and so does the MWRTA. Newton has a population of 87k people. Framingham has about 72k people. Framingham has some major "neighborhoods" such as Coburnville, Downtown, City Center, Pheasant Hill, Nobscot and Saxonville. Adding a lightrail-streetcar system to Framingham would be expensive and would take a ton of work. They could operate bigger buses like the LRTA but that could require re-routes and would take up space in the Banana Lot that isn't there. Now if we got rid of the MWRTA that would mean that a lot of other services in smaller cities would be cancelled and that would affect a ton of people. What if we moved the MWRTA hub to Natick Mall (biggest mall in New England--I couldn't find any restaurants w/ combo 1 there at least 2 auntie annes are at this mall). Natick Mall is a preexisting major transfer point. However, this could send some buses onto a deviationfest (not that you wouldn't mind). What about commuter rail? Could Framingham use any commuter rail extensions? Could it be the hub to a new Commuter rail agency? Now if there were more commuter rail lines then definitely station renovations would be necessary. There aren't enough tracks. Preexisting tracks connect onto Fitchburg/Leominster as well as Central Falls RI. I don't see commuter rail service being necessary to these cities. These and other tracks are also owned by CSX so delays will arise just like the MBTA Framingham/Worcester Commuter Rail in the 90s. The Framingham and Lowell Railroad used to have a line through Sudbury, Maynard & Westford. This is a line that would prove incredibly practical as many people commute between these cities. However, this track has been demolished so it is not feasible. Yeah, Lowell has much better transit. On another note, I wish MBTA still had commuter rail to Nashua & Manchester as well as Westerly, RI. So, if you made it this far, Miles, please give me your thoughts on what Framingham should do w/ transit? Do you agree w/ me? Do you think the MWRTA is effective? Do you think that Framingham could get Light Rail? I would much oblige your insights.

I'm not sure if Framingham is a big enough city on its own to justify an entire light rail system, especially given that its land use patterns are super suburban (with your example of Newton, the D Branch is also really suburban and needs to be upzoned, but there's a lot of historic density around the stations which helps the ridership a lot). I think you could get a lot of mileage out of increasing service on the Framingham/Worcester Line to, say, every half hour, with every other train turning in Framingham. That would make the bus hub in Framingham a lot more valuable, especially if you can integrate fares with the train. I don't like how the MWRTA network operates (too many loops), so I think streamlining that would make sense, but since they run so many routes to the Natick Mall, you could probably offset them to get a roughly 15-20 minute headway from the station to there (I agree that it should also be a major transit hub). It would also be great if they pumped up service on a Route 9 route from the Green Line, similar to the GL that they run on Saturdays - the connections to the Natick Mall, FSU, and various job centers would be valuable, especially if bus lanes could be installed on Route 9 (not that the residents would let that happen, but we can dream). Hopefully this is some decent insight - thanks so much for the kind donation!

That Adobe joke from Jackson....that's rough, buddy. Davis is named after farmer Jerome C. Davis who participated in the Bear Flag Revolt in Sonoma. Davis station was built in 1868 and is designed in Mission Revival style! Called such because Mission Revival draws inspiration from the late 18th and early 19th century Spanish missions in California, but these missions had adobe walls! Basically, the missions looked similar because they emulated the Spanish Colonial style, the limited availability and variety of building materials besides adobe near mission sites or imported to Alta California limited design options, and the missionaries and the indigenous had minimal construction experience with European designs. The California Zephyr is a love letter to the western US! Not just because of all the natural beauty, but if it wasn't for the Moffat Tunnel, Denver wouldn't have become the economic engine that it is today! Sadly, Moffat was unable to raise sufficient funds to build the tunnel before he died in 1911, but the fight for the tunnel continued in his honor, and it finally opened in 1928!

It’s such a shame the Zephyr suffers so much under the curse of PSR-addled freight companies. Honestly, I think it would be worth it - for American transit and Amtrak PR - if they got funding for a second set of rails with passenger rail priority in some of the sections. Not even the entire route, just some spans where Amtrak can catch up from other sections where freight companies screwed them over.

Unfortunately if the freight trains didn't deliver coal at the power plant on the day it's scheduled, that power plant may shut down without coal to produce electricity. Similar tales can be said of the other freight trains, wheat at bakeries, corn at high fructose corn syrup factories, soybeans at cooking oil factories, etc. You will be amazed how many factories produce goods from same day deliveries of resources. Just about all of the junk food you consume. I am a retired newspaper printer, the rolls of newsprint would run out if our deliveries three times a week was delayed a day. When a strike was expected, the newspaper stocked up extra newsprint at another leased warehouse, forcing us to truck the newsprint instead of from a railroad boxcar. Now you should comprehend that movement of freight is very important for our economy. When the shipment of goods is delayed, just a few short years ago grocery stores shelves were empty... How soon city slickers forget...

I tell everyone booking Amtrak to book your trip to get to your destination a day earlier than you need to be there. All it takes to delay the train several hours is one hot wheel axle bearing of a freight train running ahead of the Amtrak train. All it takes to ruin your smooth quiet ride is one flat wheel on the train car you are riding in. With two mile long freight trains with 150 plus freight cars, there are a lot of wheels and axles on those very long freight trains.

I go back and listen to Worcester, Massachusetts and The 71 on a regular basis, really good stuff. Thanks again Miles, and here's to an amazing 2024!

what a wonderful way to end the year! my favourite video i think (or series of videos), was the great race to new york! (i may or may not have drawn a comic of my favourite bit :), my second fav is that one station review where a bunch of teenagers just appeared out of nowhere and gave a tour of the town. it was so fun and unexpected. I love all the little mini musical bits and the references and callbacks and aaaaaaaaaa!! so much to love about this channel. have a fantastic new years, and look forward to seeing what you make! :D

i have two favourite miles in transit moment this year. one was in my where my girlfriend (who's from the us) was visiting me in the uk for most of the month of may and part of our comfortable lazy time together was watching the whole great race series as it came out, cuddled up on my sofa. the second was about 3 minutes ago when you revealed this was the trip with the chicago layover and that old video, and me and my girlfriend who's back home, watching the video synced up, both scream "what????" at each other in the voice call in synchronicity. thanks for the wonderful year of content, im so excited for whatever's coming next x

The last time I passed through Reno the tunnel had not been finished so we went down the old lines that passed down the street. Best place to buy non train food whilst on the move is the Silver Street Market deli in Albuquerque as its delicious had deli fried chicken, sandwiches and fresh cake as crazy low prices compared to say New York. Best video of the year was the race between Boston and New York as it was so funny but I also love the least used stations for their small town feel. Keep up the great work and happy New Year. 😀

I was getting dejavu with this video until I realized that the end is the prelude for the overnight in Chicago video. As for favorite video, it's definitely the one where Boston provided a weird army of buses to substitute the Orange Line. I have it saved on my phone to watch when I need to be cheered up during cold, overnight support shifts in a Humvee. It has such a weird, manic energy to it that only transit/foamer people can relate to. Thanks Miles, and here's to 2024.

I like how we're able to piece together what looks like an incredible summer trip from multiple videos. 2023 highlight, hmm...I want to pick something no one else will have picked so I'll say the difference in tone between the Fastest Atlanta Streetcar Rider Alive thumbnail ("WHOOOOAAAA!!!") and the actual video ("oh god it's so slow") was very funny to me. But you've put out a ton of great content in the year I've been following you (it's a tough choice but the Amtrak videos might be my favorites, tied with Boston diners) and I'm excited to see what else you'll do in the future. Great vid! I grew up in Galesburg and knew exactly where you were sitting in the corn. The other line you saw is the ex Santa Fe transcon route that the southwest chief uses. If you’re ever back in the area I’d recommend a layover - lots of fun shops and restaurants walking distance from station. You were on the wrong side of the train to see the few old pieces of rolling stock the train museum has - lots of RR history in the town as well.

Nine hours is nothing. I have been sixteen hours late. I have also had trains cancelled as well... When Amtrak falls out of its window, they fall further and further behind... The transcontinental main lines Amtrak runs on west of Chicago, and the main lines east of Chicago have heavy freight traffic moving the bulk goods around America coast to coast.

I've driven around that route, including the car ferry, and I know most people aren't going to use public transit, so it's fun to watch and hope they'll do something about it. You would think such a populated area would have better service, especially with connections. I loved the Megabus video, it really is horrible that if we can't have great trains we also can't have good bus service. Our city is looking at making changes to the old Greyhound bus station and meanwhile millions get spent at the airport on I think a third recent major renovation. Happy new year!
