Story time: as a ~13-14 year old, I accidentally stumbled upon this song among the install files on my family PC, fell in love with it, and burned it to a CD as many times as it would fit, so I could fall asleep to it on a loop. (My Karaoke machine which was my CD player at the time did not have a working "repeat all" feature.) I fell asleep to this every single night for eons. I still have the disk somewhere.

My dad has worked at Microsoft since 1994, and ever since I was born he's occasionally taken me into the MSFT buildings on the Redmond campus to take me exploring. I remember going around the offices, watching the same people that made Windows XP play foosball with my dad or playing Halo CE in after work parties. I didn't know it at the time, but I was there to witness a part of the Personal Computer Revolution, and I count myself lucky to have been a witness of it. This song is a nice reminder of those times I spent in Redmond, and it also reminds me to work hard in school so that I can be a part of the next revolution of my time. 2023 Update: For anyone reading this today, I was recently hired at Microsoft to be a software engineer at their Redmond campus. It's been fun being able to explore all the old buildings with my own badge now!

If I want an insecure OS that's what I'll use, I just installed Windows XP on a VM to play some older games I have, and at least I have that freedom. I worry about the day when I can no longer do that with the future's equivalent. Microsoft has said they're not going to make a new OS for a while. Imagine if next there's an update that changes something so significant, that older programs may struggle to run, even though they're written for that same OS. It'd be like the OS changes from before, but more subtle. Now it'll forcibly update me to the new version that has issues with older stuff, and I might not be able to run those things anymore. I know that sounds like a scenario that Microsoft wouldn't cause, but I don't want to put my trust in someone else to not be incompetent. Just let me have control over my own computer, and if they don't screw things up, I'll happily update. This new way of doing things is just weird, and I'm not even some old fart who's stuck in some way he's been doing things for years.

I'm sad because I was too young to understand anything about Windows XP, much less about computers... I was born a couple years before Vista came out. I built a Win98 PC as well as restored an old Optiplex GX620 (had no OS, was in dire need of cleaning, sat in a closet for four years, etc) for the sake of learning why these systems were so nostalgic for everyone else. The Win98 PC isn't quite old enough (only parts I had were from 2000s era) but it boots with no issues. My only memory of WinXP is some old desktop we used to have until it was donated recently

Back in high school (2011) I was running a new install of Ubuntu on my laptop. I didn't have much music on my PC at the time but I downloaded this song to it and decided to listen to it at near max volume because of how loud the students were in the library. So I put on some headphones and worked on my school work. The thing is, the Ubuntu audio drivers were screwy, the audio went through both my headphones and laptop speakers. I took my headphones off when the song was almost done playing and the entire room was silent. Nobody said anything. Same here. I'm 26 now, but I remember saving up my money back in 2003 - a whole $99 - just to get the upgrade CD for Windows XP Home Edition from Walmart. I used it to upgrade my Windows 98 HP computer. When I heard this music for the first time, I was so excited - being on the cutting edge of technology (well, in the sense of software, anyway) and getting something pristine and new without the OEM junk. I eventually sold it on eBay once I moved on to a different computer. Somewhere, out there, a small part of my childhood - a product key - is hopefully helping someone else put new life into an old computer. RIP Windows XP.

The Laughs i would get on the weekends staying up late on old KZbin and watching "Try Not to Laugh" videos and Listening to Music and playing games on my 128MB ATi Radeon X600 GPU. Messing around with Microsoft Sam. Every day i was on my PC rain or shine. It never let me down and was always ready to go no matter what. I guess all good things must come to an end... I swear i could put this song on a loop and just lose myself. No matter how bad of a day i had or what had Happened my Windows XP Machine was ALWAYS there for me. Never argued or fought with me like Windows 8 did.. It just worked..... Just as everybody at Microsoft wanted it to. What Windows XP was is something we will NEVER see again.. The early 2000's were the biggest growth for Hardware and Software. One of the Few OS's that managed to be loved by Home Users AND Business's Alike. So Simple yet so Powerful and elegant... The NT environment is one of the best ever created and XP was just so stable..... Windows XP felt like it had a heart and soul. Everything about it felt warm and Inviting. From the Default Background (Bliss) and Startup and logoff sound to this Beautiful Install song here. All for an OS where people said that it was "Too Fancy" and Looked to different from Windows 2000. In a few years they all ate there words. 2001 - 2014 - Windows XP Killed By It's Creator. Just heard this music while installing Windows XP on VirtualBox, so happy I finally got a friggin' virtual machine to work as well and I was delighted to hear this during the install.
