I'll never understand why they auto-tune the shit out of her vocals in the studio, when she actually can really sing, and has a great voice, and her live natural vocals are awesome!

I don't think "they" do - she makes those choices. Of course she can sing, and she shows it every time she performs live, and her live voice is awesome. But... She uses autotune in the studio the way it was meant to be used - to add interesting textures to the vocals the way you use the levers and switches on a guitar to create effects. It's really remarkable if you listen closely. I think she's trying to match how she sees and hears the song in her head, rather than trying to show off her vocal skills. No one else sounds like her, and it's not just her unique voice - it's the musical genius of how it's mixed. If you have visual/textural synesthesia, her live versions and voice are cool, but her studio stuff explodes with layers. Listening to the studio recordings of music she's written, on headphones with eyes closed is like watching her live performance through a kaleidoscope

@cryptidsntunes Actually, the way auto-tune was originally intended to be used was as a tool to "touch up" vocals here and there in order to perfect the sound. And it was intended to be somewhat unnoticeable. Somehow, over the last 2 decades, it has become something that is used frequently and continuously by almost every recording artist. It's very noticeable, electronic and artificial sounding. I don't like it at all. And it's not even necessary for singers like Miley Cyrus and Camila Cabello, who actually can sing. That's why I generally only listen to pre-2000 music, when music was still real.
