@@killer92173as I recall the book doesn’t mention the dwarves doing anything, but that doesn’t mean they actually did nothing. 2:17 one of my favorite subtle details they have throughout the whole hobbit trilogy is Bofur taking care of Bilbo, there are many moments where he is quietly being kind of saving him without asking for anything back, in the first one especially, in Rivendell, he sends Bilbo into the pit surrounded by the dwarves for protection, later on he helped Bilbo get off the ledge with the stone giants, as well as let him leave when Bilbo got homesick. AND in the second movie, when they get captured by Elves, Bofurs first line is "Where's Bilbo?" He is my favorite of the dwarves personally.

Something I can't help but notice: Up until Bilbo makes it clear he gave the Arkenstone away and stands up to Thorin, none of the dwarves were able to muster up the courage to tell Thorin how evil he had become. It wasn't until Bilbo, a hobbit, was able to summon a spark of courage to tell Thorin that what he was doing was wrong that the other dwarves really began to do the same. Before then, they were clearly disturbed and afraid, but they didn't really do anything. Bilbo's courage changed that.

Ngl, this version of The Hobbit really shows why Bilbo did what he did. Not just because he didn't want more bloodshed and risk harm to his friends and others in Dale. He saw and was the only one willing to call out the downfall of Thorin after assuming the crown. He saw that the once grim yet noble Thorin Oakenshield was reducing to little more than a conniving, paranoid dwarf lord. His companions were loyal to him but didn't want to dare question their rightful king of his decent into darkness. Only Bilbo, the smallest, weakest, and most humble, knew he had to prevent Thorin going to a senseless war with the people he had promised to return their kindness all because he hated the elves and didn't want to share the wealth of the mountain. Praise Bilbo for his courage and honor. Also, gotta respect Thranduil for being worried. High elven king yet he didn't want harm to come to Bilbo as he had respect for the little halfling

Yeah, I guess they did it this way to keep Smaug in the spotlight. Yeah, he got killed in laketown, but his aura and spirit took over Thorin so he can be like him similar to how Thror ended up until Smaug took over Erebor.

From what I've read Tolkien was really interested in "dragon sickness" and a lot of what we see/read is based off of a lot of different lore. Some of those that have the sickness in stories actually end up becoming a dragon basically. Its really neat how they played off of that. Just makes me love the franchise more.

I don't care who, but any of the actors in this scene should have won an Oscar at least! Yes these films are flawed but they are still magnificent and almost perfect! Why don't people appreciate such hard work anymore?

The acting is brilliant. The script is dogshit. Stretching a simple book into a trilogy is a mistake, there simply wasn't enough material to justify three movies, it could have been a single work of genius, 2 good movies, or three crappy movies. And greed always wins that struggle, doesn't it?
@michaelcoulter11147 жыл бұрын
Vid0907 I'm not blaming the actors, or Peter Jackson, just the producers, and the studio. There's some brilliant acting, as I said in my original comment, but the story just isn't enough to make a trilogy from, and it shows in these movies - the parts drawn directly from the book are amazing, but the "filler" stuff made up to stretch the movies is garbage. The Tauriel, Legolas, and Kili love triangle, the confrontation between the White Council and Sauron, the character Alfrid (in its ENTIRETY!), all these things took these movies from great to "meh", imo

I really think Peter Jackson did an amazing job. He added so much to the story, so much to the battle of the five armies, and he added a lot more character to Thorin by including the orks. I loved the books but honestly I think the movies are better
@stephengontis15172 жыл бұрын
I actually agree, and I'm a huge fan of Tolkien's written word ("The Hobbit" was one of those books that got me into reading, and "Lord of the Rings" is still my favorite book). As great as the novel was, the trilogy improved upon it.

And to think, he did this when he only had less than half the time to do this trilogy as he did with the LOTR trilogy. Imagine how good this trilogy would be if he had the 7 years to make it.

It's an interesting scene because the dwarves agree that whoever holds the Arkenstone is "crowned" and would in theory have the allegiance of the dwarf families. Bilbo throughout most of this movie acts the ideal of a king more than Thorin: risking his life for the greater good, cherishes the living more than treasure as seen in the acorn scene, and seeks his friends out for advice. And when he held the Arkenstone he was technically King under the Mountain.

The best parts of the last two films were when they focused on the relationships of Bilbo and the dwarves. The introduction of Legolas and Tauriel and the undue attention paid to them destroyed the focus and pacing of these movies for me, it's quite sad. An Unexpected Journey demonstrates how wonderful this trilogy could have been.
@generaltobias37774 ай бұрын
Yes, too much deviation from the books. I still enjoyed the movies and I'm usually welcome to changes in lore but if they focused more on the actual journey to erebor instead of all the side stuff then it'd of been better.
