Hence why thranduil says he would never let legolas marry a lowly sindarin elf (tauriel). You can also tell because thranduil and legolas both have white hair and the other murkwood elves have brown or red hair. There's a lot of different kinds of elves, I suggest you look at the sundering of the elves

In case anyone’s confuse why Legolas asked his father why he killed the orc instead of setting him free, it’s because Elves have this code of conduct where they have to set their enemies free if they repent and beg for forgiveness.

Yes, elves are predisposed to be honorable and kind even to their enemies although Silvan elves are a bit rougher in that regard. However Thranduil and Legolas are Sindar and are thus expected to be most honourable which is why Legolas was confused by his father's conduct.

Thranduil had a rough life and his kingdom shrank because of servants of Darkness such as the spiders and Orcs taking over most of his realm. Why release an Orc that they will simply have to kill later anyway? Besides, who knows what happens to the fea of Orcs (assuming they have them) after they die? Even Tolkien never settled the matter to his own satisfaction.

'The Lord of the Rings' was written in-universe by Frodo. 'There And Back Again, A Hobbit's Tale' was written by Bilbo. That's why the Hobbit film trilogy is written as so much more goofy than its sequel series. I'm amazed that more people haven't caught that, frankly.

I like how this scene shows, albeit subtly, that Thranduil and Legolas actually have a good relationship. Not perfect, but somewhat better than the common takeaway of Thranduil being a flat-out terrible dad. Thranduil is very harsh and authoritative toward Tauriel, and looks down on the Dwarves, Men, and even Gandalf. But he doesn’t mind Legolas openly questioning him, nor does Legolas show any fear or hesitance in stating his opinions and calling out his dad for doing something he disagrees with. There’s no “shut up Legolas and remember your place” here, and there’s no “oh I need to bow down to Dad no matter what” here. Clearly Thranduil has raised Legolas to speak his mind freely without any need for fear of judgment or scolding. And even though Thranduil is clearly triggered by the reference to Sauron, he doesn’t take it out on Legolas. In fact, Legolas is the only character to whom Thranduil always speaks in a gentle manner.

Just to milk the vibes of the whole Morgul blade stabbing Frodo from Fellowship? (keep in mind that nothing in this scene is canon). Mind you "Morgul" literally means sorcery in Black Speech.
