In this video about the role of motherhood, I’m surprised you didn’t mention how Salem WAS a mother. Four girls taken way before their time, casualties in a fight Ozma and Salem both share blame for. Salem was already extremely messed up by that point, but it was that tragedy that probably guaranteed a lot of vengeance for Ozma specifically. I suppose that could be a video in of itself. Female villains whose motivation stems from losing their kids. Either by never having the chance to have kids, or because they die. The “sorrow and vengeance for dead child trope” seems to play out pretty differently based on gender; both in the parent, and the child. Salem’s larger problems are her control and trust issues that come from the abuse of her creator. First the father that lived her away in a tower, and then the Gods that failed her and then explicitly screwed her over. Then of course there’s her multitude of suicide attempts, which failed not for a lack of trying, but overriding magic. That must create a level of disassociation I can’t even wrap my brain around. We can even see it with how she fights in Volume 8. Also, I’m predicting there were a lot more suicide attempts after her family and home burned down.

She does feel more from the shadowweaver school of motherhood, use your kids for your own glory and power. She's shown to have been ambitious since her school days and seems to view all relationships as business arrangements. Like the fact she fired her husband as part of them separating, like husband was a position in the company. So far her attractiveness has seemingly never mattered to her as anything but for the appearance of wealth and power, she ( and her kids) need to look good, because it projects status.

I see your Blight, and raise you by two Clawthorne sisters: definetly MILF material, yet (mostly) the good guys.

4:33 Unrelated, but Shadow Weaver is the best character from that show and part of the only ones to not "suck, fall down, etc" in the final season even with her little screentime. Also, yes please for that future "review", i would like to hear your opinion, i wonder if you like the final season. For me it sadly didn't. :(

I feel like this trope is a good example of why some themes are more effective when used on one gender or group versus another due to the fact that they appeal to a lot of the things that those groups of people might be feeling. Middle-aged women often do feel less comfortable in their bodies as they slowly lose their curves and become less desirable to attractive men. This is pretty much the inverse of what men feel at that age because women tend to prefer older men, meaning that they have less of a frame of reference to relate to the character which is why men seeking immortality is usually less about vanity and more about fear of death or extending their power. I'm not at all saying that middle-aged women are all evil witches trying to steal their daughters' youth or anything like that but if it was an option on the table I think a lot of women would at least consider it in the back of their mind in the same way that we all would consider doing shitty things that make us feel better. THAT'S why they're villains; they represent the dark side of ourselves when we knowingly do selfish things. And in doing those selfish things they act as a foil to allow the pure and shiny hero (or heroine) to shine even brighter in contrast. I also think that it's easy for audiences to relate to this trope because we've all seen that borderline-Machiavellian middle-aged woman who seems deeply unhappy with herself. I don't that think this trope is any more of a sexist plot than it is to portray men as being extremely insecure superiority/Napoleon complexes a la King John (Robin Hood), Homelander (The Boys), Ludo (Star vs the Forces of Evil), Kim Jong Un (lol), Patrick Bateman (American Psycho), Syndrome (The Incredibles), Scar (Lion King), etc. Not that I'm saying that that was your point, just providing a different perspective.

I would like to bring up Kreia from star wars: knights of the old republic 2. She's technically a gilf and technically she's a companion who follows you rather than a true villain, but she's one of the most interesting and enigmatic companions in the game, and I'd says she avoids a lot of the stereotypes associated with milf villains. Her being old set her up as the wise, mystical mentor role, and her being a jerk with some rather fascist, dark side ideals reflected how she'd witnessed decades of jedi and republic ineptitude. She's kind of a tragic character and you wonder if bringing her on a quest to save the galaxy might dissuade her cynicism. Also (and this is getting into big spoiler territory) you play as a character who, having experienced extreme trauma from war, has become severed from the force, which she finds fascinating. She views the force as a tool, but she also understands it has a will of its own and how it guides people, and she hates that (parallels to real-world debates about fate and gods). She's experimented to create pupils who could truly master the force and not be controlled by it and has failed every time, but in you she sees possible perfection. She's just a really great character and she meshes so well with the protagonist and the central themes of the game.

4:21 I think this is an example of falling into the pit of the “minority character who’s only trait is being said minority” character
