I think that either Mahiru and her boyfriend were both originally suffering from depression and potentially suicidal tendencies, where Mahiru made her boyfriend’s depression worse, or she ruined his mental state to such a point where he became depressed and suicidal by relying on him for her own depression - in order to make him share her pain which she views as love. In her first mv, she describes how she wants to share pain with her boyfriend and have ‘matching pain’, (which she later refers to as matching love) while also saying that their ‘sickness is getting pretty bad’. It seems like she romanticises their pain, and thinks of it as part of their love. So she doesn’t want to get better, because she thinks that would harm their relationship, like where she says she ‘hates being ok’ (a more literal translation). This could also apply to her boyfriend, in that she doesn’t want him to get better either and so she gives him more pain (which she sees as love). The romanticism is also evident when she talks about ‘giving love to the point of pulling you down’, when she says she’s ‘happy to get hurt when they argue’, and when she says that wanting to die because she can’t know everything about her boyfriend is part of love - she associates these negative things positively. Another thing to note is how she mentions she wants to see her boyfriend’s ‘cute confused face’ which could be a kind of early indication that she doesn’t take his emotions too seriously; it seems likely that she would find him cute when he’s upset. I think the first mv also suggests that Mahiru isn’t as happy as she seems when she says she sucks at pretending to smile but relies on her boyfriend to feel ‘better’, which could also put a lot of pressure on him if he was already depressed, or would influence his mental state. In this mv, it seems like the cake represents the ‘love’ she was feeding him which was probably very unhealthy (which could mean the boyfriend also fed her this to some extent, or that it just represented the overall love he gave to her). When he was at his limit, feeling very depressed and suicidal, she fed him more of this unhealthy ‘love’ which made him feel even worse. I don’t think if he was fine before Mahiru he would have killed himself (unless she hurt him so badly he became depressed); it would require Mahiru to be insanely controlling which I don’t think she was (although she definitely was a bit controlling). Also, I think it’s notable how both of them are worn and tattered up in the forest, however Mahiru is content while her boyfriend is suffering - which could reinforce that she thinks their ‘shared pain’ is what makes up their love and is happy about it. So essentially Mahiru feels that their shared pain (depression, suicidal nature) makes up their relationship, so she doesn’t want the two of them to get better as she feels their pain is the love between them. She gives a lot of ‘love’ to her boyfriend, unaware that it is actually pain and hurts him so much that he wants to commit suicide, which makes her confused and regretful as to why the love she gave him caused such an ending unlike other couples.

that is also what i thought of! notice on how the cake when mahiru was feeding her bf it, it was bigger which means bigger affection… in mahiru’s vision. that’s when it turned into rats in her bf’s pov, meaning that her “affectionate” words weren’t helping. but mahiru’s bf fed her a small amount, but notice on how his hand was under it as if he didn’t want to drop it and be careful when feeding her it, that didn’t turn into rats in any of their povs i feel like mahiru is deceiving us 😭

@@king0fspades36 She’s also in a poor mental state right now after receiving the guilty vote and being told her love is wrong. Mahiru is the type of person who thinks being hurt by her partners is a good thing (she alludes to “matching pain” in How To Be In Love With You) and says she’ll do or be anything her boyfriend wants. As opposed to her knowing the relationship was bad and being in denial, I think she rather is aware she’s hurting her boyfriend and he’s hurting her but thinks it’s an expression of love. It’s more realistic with people who stay in toxic relationships that they do so because they genuinely thought it was normal and didn’t see anything wrong with it, and they only realize how bad it was after they leave and enter a healthy relationship. I think her ignoring or trivializing his boyfriend's problems could be one of the ways she hurted him.
I think the PV makes everything pretty clear but let's still go. In Mahiru's head the relationship is perfect and everything is okay. However, in reality it is toxic on both of their end. Tho house/room in the PV sembolizes their relationship. Mahiru sees it as a bright and cozy place while in reality it is a crumbled place. Food (cake specifically) is a metaphor for the love that Mahiru gives. She sees it as a big sweet cake but in reality she is feeding him rats, meaning that she did not do toxic things on purpose but that she saw that as her giving him her best. We can also see how he feeds her cake, that would show how he was actually giving her love (or what she saw as love). In the later parts of the PV we can see him starving, loosing weight and being too weak to walk. That shows how she did not give him the love that he gave her. And when she tries to give him love she thinks that she gives him love of the same value as he gave her but ends up feeding him rats. Next point, the forst. I think that in the fandom many agree that it is a direct allusion to the suicide forest. This PV made it canon that in the end the boyfriend commits suicide. If we take forest as a symbolic thing, we can see how they walk throught the forest both messed up. That shows their relationship. It left both of them in a bad mental space and both of them suffer. However, Mahiru refuses to see it and she still sees it as a happy place with merry go rounds. She is the one who is leading the way while walking and boyfriend stops walking at some point. He gives up but she would keep on going. Then she feeds him rats instead of an actual food, and this is her crime moment. The starvation and exhaustion is a direct parallel to their metal health. He needed to have a nutritious food at that moment to survive, but all that Mahiru could give him were dead animals. So, basically what happened in real life is that he was getting to a mental point where he couldn't keep on going and was feeling like he wanted to end it all. He needed some actual love and affirmation at that time but when Mahiru tried to do so, she once again acted in a toxic way towards him and that was the final straw for him and he killed himself. Based on both this PV and trial 1 one, Mahiru only realizes how badly she was treating him after he killed himself and before that she thought that she was a good girlfriend. In my humble opinion it is difficult to say that is guilty. She wasn't doing something bad on purpose and she just sees being in a toxic situationship as her "being herself". She is probably someone who never experienced a healthy enviornement and she just saw her actions as normal. She is clearly mentally unstable and she regrets her action after realizing what she did. Then again it isn't easy to call her completely innocent. I am lost about how to vote her this time.

I don't see anyone mentioning it, but in the first MV, Mahiru was often portrayed with a cat-like attitude. I think the mouse here is supposed to be a reminder of that and a subtle hint towards her toxic relationship. You probably know that cats often bring home mice as gifts for their owners. To us, humans, it's a weird sight and we have to pretend to appreciate it because the cat meant well. I also read somewhere that they do this because they're afraid we might be hungry. I think it's a very interesting thing to see it depicted in this MV ! Mahiru, the cat, meant well by trying to feed her boyfriend, the human, but due to their different perceptions of that gesture, her boyfriend only saw it as a terrifying act.

If the mv mostly takes place in the forest that would be interesting. Forests are the natural habitat of birds so it could symbolize how Mahiru is out of the security of the "birdcage" and is now alone in the world without her boyfriend. Editing this now with seeing the music video- I think the merry go round is a metaphor for the relationship, it just keeps going around and around and dosent stop until we see the boyfriend's dead body. I think the cake represents maybe the toxicity, mahiru idealizes it (this is already hinted at in tihwtilwy, with all the talk about fighting and matching pain) but in the forest section, it's shown as rats. I'd also like to say, this is all mahiru's pov and while some lyrics may hint at it, she never once shows her boyfriend in a bad light. He's either idealized in a dream, or litterally dying cause of her. She refuses to believe he did anything wrong and never once tries to portray it that way. In the forest their both battered and torn, and I can only imagine that's meant to show how both of them have suffered cause the relationship but neither wanted to leave. Mahiru in the end just had the final blow. I still think she's innocent. she genuinely never wanted anyone dead and while she was toxic, this was her first ever time being in the relationship and the lyrics talk about how remorsing over what she'd do different. If given the chance, I don't think she would do the same thing over again. She'd just try her best to have a normal relationship. It should also be noted that in her voice drama, it's implied her boyfriend had the same idealized views of love as her Edit again cause im indecisive- I take back what i said about the cake representing toxicity, i think it represents shallow comfort. The boyfriend offers a very tiny slice of cake (only the edge of a slice) when mahiru is upset, and while it makes her happy- we see the carousel still spins. The carousel shows how no real problem was fixed, and things will keep going as it is. Then we see mahiru offer a big chunk of cake, and its pressumably from the same slice he offered as the edge is missing. Mahiru offers shallow comfort to him in a time of need, simply because she dosent know any other way to comfort him. Its why at the chorus she cries out about how she cant get things right, because shes just copying what he was doing (something she has always done, like when she copied his hobbies in tihwtilwy).

Just a note for anyone about to write their theory: remember that the MVs are also reflective of their mental state, and what we see in the video may or may not accurately represent reality. In this case, remember that Mahiru currently thinks of herself as undeserving of love, and sees her love alone as a bad thing since we voted her guilty. Since most people here have pointed out the cake and rats being symbolism for stress/general toxicity, many people think Mahiru was very toxic to her boyfriend. Interestingly, the boyfriend is also feeding her the exact same cake. Which leads to my point, what if the boyfriend was also acting very toxic too? It’s just that Mahiru can’t see the rats/toxicness her boyfriend was giving her. It’s shown in the mv itself that Mahiru was seeing the situation in rose tinted glasses, and so I don’t have a hard time believing that she may be seeing his love in a similar way, thinking it was healthy, unable to see reality. I will not say whether I think she’s guilty or innocent though because 1. I don’t think voting is going to help the prisoners at all due to a theory I have, and 2. I have to watch the voice drama as well before coming to a decision. Edit: I just listened to the voice drama, and while I don’t understand Japanese, WOW is Mahiru setting off death flags for herself. I also noticed that she seems to be apologetic towards Kotoko and she apologizes a lot in the voice drama. To be honest, she kinda sounds like an abuse victim to me, but I don’t want to say that for sure. Again, I can’t say anything for sure cause I don’t speak Japanese, but her voice drama gives us a lot. Plus, Mahiru at the end telling Es she’s proud of him🥲

I'm sorry but I'm tired of these replies. As the user above me said, all of them need therapy. So with that logic we shouldn't vote anyone guilty anymore. But that aside, as a survivor of heavy mental ab*se in relationship I'm so tired of this "empathy for the perpetator" mentality in society. People are always so fixated on the abusing ones and their reasons. They completely forget about the survivors (or dead ones, like here) and how their life is a mess forever (or isn't anymore). Especially _they_ need therapy. So prisoners like Mahiru don't need a guilty vote? Even though she proceeded ab*sing her partner when she saw he was almost dead? There are pretty "grey" cases here, but she is one that looks more obvious on the more "guilty" side for me. (It even looked like she loved the way he looked when he was so exhausted and continued "feeding" him). So she should be forgiven? If even cases like her are forgiven, just who isn't forgivable then? And is it even possible to decide this from an outsider perspective, aren't the victims the only ones who are in a position to decide that (even though it isn't possible here anymore)? This is an interesting question that goes pretty well for all of Milgram, when you think about it.
