Dale Dye is the man and BoB, Platoon and Saving PR is the proof. I sure hope he eventually gets to make "No Better Place to Die".

Yeah...Pepper went through the same boot camp that the rest of the gang went through....minus Matt Damon...so he had Garand thumb like most people get when they first operate the Garand...I thought this had been confirmed long long ago. Here is a fun fact that I learned recently...Spielberg got the idea to keep Matt Damon out of the boot camp from Kubrick keeping Tim Colceri in a hotel room instead of with the rest of the Marines on Full Metal Jacket. Of course, that is what led to R Lee Ermey "stealing" the role of Gunny Hartman from Colceri by being so incredible as a drill instructor on set where Kubrick could see him.😁

It wasn't called Grand Thumb when I was in. It was called "M1 Thumb", and yeah, it smarts. But Jackson wasn't using an M1. That was a standard issue M1903A4, but with the wrong scope. Somewhere in the timeline, the scope, which initially was an incorrect Lyman, was switched for an Unertl. That wouldn't even FIT the M1903. WTF???? The correct Weaver scope is not rare and could certainly have been used.

That's what the military technical advisor on the film, Marine veteran Dale Dye, called it when I was corresponding with him, "M1 Thumb". Seems like "Garand Thumb" is a somewhat modern nickname for it.

@@HistoryvsHollywoodOfficial "Modern nickname"???? The M1 was retired from line companies in 1957 or 58 if memory serves. Replaced by the M14 (a piece of shit. An accurate piece of shit, but still.). However, it remained in ROTC training inventories for MANY years afterward, which is where I encountered it while in ROTC at Auburn University in the 60's. Whoever told you it was "Grand Thumb" never carried one. By the way, you would think Gen. George Patton would list armor, tanks specifically, as the best battlefield device ever. But he didn't. Here is what he wrote..."“In my opinion, the M-1 Rifle is the greatest battle implement ever devised.” And it won the war in Europe and performed well in Korea.

@@tvideo1189 There is a guy on KZbin whose Channel is called _"Garand Thumb"_ . So my guess is that like a lot of things - it's an Internet Thing. When I go my _M1 Thumb_ - that's what we called it. .

@@tvideo1189 Yes, modern as in the nickname changed in the time since. This isn't difficult.

He was probably messing around with an unloaded M1 off camera and didn't know pressing down on the mechanism near the bottom of the magazine well would cause the bolt to close shut on his thumb. You can't get Garand Thumb when loading a full clip.

Did Dale Dye's vietnam helmet on the photo contain a lucky strike package?
@HistoryvsHollywoodOfficial
@HistoryvsHollywoodOfficial 2 ай бұрын
Likely, as Lucky Strike was one of the brands included with field rations through WWII, Korea and Vietnam. The practice ended around 76.

Something still doesn't fit even with Dales explanation. The actor is left handed and the bruise is on the right thumb. He would load the M1 with his LEFT thumb, being left handed.
@kapten-awesome

But maybe he was shooting it right-handed since the op-rod is only on the right side, so wouldn't it be much much harder to reload it with your left hand?

It’s ridiculous to speculate on a supposed injury on a fictional movie.

Yes. The Character was using a 1903 - but - the Actor - when being given military type training before they made the movie - got it from an M-1. .
