Vietnam combat veteran here. The song made me squirt one. You'll never forget the shit you were in, and the comrades in it with you. Here's why: "I now know why men who have been to war yearn to reunite. Not to tell stories or look at old pictures. Not to laugh or weep. Comrades gather because they long to be with the men who once acted at their best; men who suffered and sacrificed, who were stripped of their humanity. I did not pick these men. They were delivered by fate and the military. But I know them in a way I know no other men. I have never given anyone such trust. They were willing to guard something more precious than my life. They would have carried my reputation, the memory of me. It was part of the bargain we all made, the reason we were so willing to die for one another. As long as I have memory, I will think of them all, every day. I am sure that when I leave this world, my last thought will be of my family and my comrades... such good men." Sabre79, D 1/1

Straight Jacket it’s not that civilian life is hard. It’s just a sense of purpose and honor. A soldier, marine, airman, sailor....they all know they’re doing something that’s bigger than themselves.
@djay66515 жыл бұрын
@Straight Jacket It's not anything like that. But for as hellish as war may be, it's a simple life and for a lot of us, when we get out we come back to places we dont recognize anymore and people who are still doing the same things they did 10-15 years ago. Essentially, we have to find a way to fit in with a society that we have little in common with and that's difficult. I've been out two years and I still wish every day I was still in, even though it was becoming increasingly difficult to continue physically.
@frankrigelwoodsr.11845 жыл бұрын
I cut my military teeth in the Marines back in 1971, after my ETS I got a job with a County Police Department in Georgia. There I worked on patrol, traffic where I started investigating fatal accidents I was also on the dive team and SWAT where I held every position except team commander. However, It wasn't six months before I started missing the military, my problem was most of the officers were former Marines, not to mention the Department was an friggin awesome. With no Marine Reserve unit around, I kept looking. I eventually met a couple of officers that was in a U.S. Army SF unit. B Co. 3rd SF Bn, 11th SFG( Abn) to be exact. So I swallowed my pride and joined. Made it through all the jarhead jokes, got my flash ( before tabs), assigned to a team and went to work. 1994 Clinton disbanded all combat arms in the Reserves, so I finished out my 28 years with B Co, 3rd SF Bn, 20th SFG (Abn) of the Florida Army National Guard. So here I am loving life, then one day I realized my time has come to an end. 2001 retired from the military, 2002 retired from the PD. Still needing to work, new family to include a newborn. One day I went on a call where a father found his baby not breathing, not saying anything about the father, but it hit me hard the all the father knew what to do was call 911. I later made a mental note to get enough under my belt so that I would never find myself in a situation we where I didn't know what to do. With that in mind I started looking for something not military or L.E. I applied for the Southside Fire/EMS Department. A private company that worked on the Paid / Volunteer system. Regular Fire Departments hated us, but with SSFD/EMS you were expected to be able to handle your self. First two years I worked on an ambulance but trained on an Engine. Then I was reassigned to the fire side. There I learned everything I could about the engines, ladders, tankers. Not just how to put them in operation but how they worked. I also learned as much as I could about all the equipment we had as well as being in charge of a fire scene or a disaster. On my days off I worked in various units of the Sheriff's Office as a Part time Deputy. But after Ten years of the FD and SO my body let me know that it was tired of the abuse, so I retired from them also. So here I am with all this knowledge and too old and beat up to do much with it. Here's my advice to anyone who hasn't fell asleep yet. If your in LE. Take a EMT course, then spend some time working on an ambulance. If there's a volunteer FD around you, join it. Its all about cross training to make you a better equipped person in case SHTF. And get it while you got some youth left. Getting back on azimith, one night I was working in a housing unit in the jail, feeling sorry for myself. The Corporal over the unit was an old retire E-8, I asked him if he ever missed the military? His answer, "Everyday, like a lost lover". Maybe you could work that into a song Matt.

@dead2self19835 жыл бұрын
@@richijaufmann392 not sure if I understand your question. I worked with other nations, but I did not work for them. Mainly, working with them included interrogation. Not always though. @mr.k.i.s.s74965 жыл бұрын
@@lightningchegg4823 Probably because Civilized Societies have shunned Wars and Warriors for the last 100 years. Look at what happened to the Vietnam Veterans: They were virtually cast out of society. Conform or die. The only people you can depend on are your buddies. You are linked to them forever through your shared experiences, good and bad. I live in an Oilfield Town. The smell reminds me of the stinking canals of Baghdad, and can't get away from that. It's also hot, not Iraq hot, but definitely warm, and that reminds me too. Then there's Veteran's Day, Memorial Day, and there is that One Day, the day a Soldier was killed, that's seared into my brain. The IED that went off next a Friend's Truck. The day I almost died was seared in my nugget....and the toll of underestimating your enemy, as you throw an IP in the back of a pickup, as he bleeds all over it. The poor Taxi Driver who got Car Jacked half a mile from home, and was executed by his attackers. Those are just some of the things I will never forget.

I am eternally grateful for the service of our men and women in the military. I was unable to serve due to severe back problems at 17 that required surgery, was also unable to become law enforcement due to the risk of injury in the first 5 years. I fell into a way of life without direction and fell into the wrong croud but i knew it was wrong. I was determined to change that shit around. So I did what I assume is the next best thing and became a security officer. It's not much but as far as serving for the safety of the people, I love it. It gets chaotic and it doesnt even come close to holding a candle to military and LE but it is very fulfilling. From a young age I wanted to serve this country so I'm doing what i can. I love being a security officer but i really hope i can step it up a notch soon. Thank you so much for every one in the military and LE for your service and god bless.

So incredibly true, once a soldier always a soldier. I miss the military, far more exciting than civilian life. The comradery is very different than it is in the military. Guess you have to be in the service to understand what life is like and how different it really is, and how still to this day soldiers get along better in civilian life with other soldiers than they do regular people. signed the line when I was 18. Served 18 years both active duty as well as training and educational later in my career. The hardest part of my life was being retired due to health. The 1st year of my life back was the hardest to acclaim back to loud noises. 2nd was forcing my time as an officer to the back of my head when dealing with day to day. It is a VERY hard process that most of our career soldiers face. I put a poor law officer in an arm bar lock 1st day back because he was an old family friend and slapped me with a grab on the shoulder from behind to say hi and I reacted. I found myself intimidating poor fast food service workers because I was used to get in, eat, get out. You can put the boy in the forces, but its a hard fact to take the forces out of the boy. Gods speed ALL our troops, Canadian, American, British, ALL our military brothers and sisters.
