This film holds a lot of significance to me, as it's the exact film that sparked my interest and passion for the military history of the GDR! I remember Dr. Mark Felton had uploaded a video about the NVA back in 2018 and it appeared in my recommendations. I was completely shocked to learn how the NVA maintained all of these traditional drill movements and from that point onwards, my interest kept growing until I finally opened up my channel in 2021! I hope you all enjoyed this film, there is more to come! Thank you all so much!

That Drum Major is not a small man- but he sure can move! I've always been fascinated that the Soviets let the DDR keep the Prussian traditions and probably encouraged them. I guess they realized the difference between Prussian military traditions and the NSDAP. My grandfather came to the U.S. from Prussia around 1910, jumping ship from a german Merchant vessel. All my family relations were in East Germany, so I've been interested in the DDR for a long time.

The Soviet Army also inherited many Prussian military traditions when they revived the traditions of the Imperial Russian Army in 1943. Russia and Prussia were very close and often exchanged their culture and music. You can find many Russian marches in the repertoire of German military bands in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries!

@chrishieke1261 Жыл бұрын
Hmm - been born and raised there in the first 8 years of my life, I can't really support the notion that it was a 'strange' state. It was different, but not stranger than the other German state. It is just the 'look back' (that is, as always in history, the view of the victor) from our current position that feeds this sentiment. One can appreciate the current situation without "sacrificing" everything in Germany pre 1990. The history of the GDR is just as valid as German history as the history of the former FRG. But I digress. ;) If you compare the NVA and the Bundeswehr, the NVA was far more in line with the German military traditions (often superimposed by Soviet/socialist 'decoration') than the Bundeswehr. Be it uniforms, drill or even organisation/structure. Maybe the Bundeswehr comes around, at least with regard to ditch those ugly uniforms we're currently using on a daily basis. ^^

@chrishieke1261 Жыл бұрын
@@Chiron84 You're milage may vary. I grew up partly in the restricted border zone (my parternal grandparents lived there) and had quite a lot of 'western' relatives. There were hardships (my maternal grandmother wasn't allowed to visit her dieing sister on the other side of the border in the 1960th) and restrictions (opportunities with 'western relatives' were restricted regarding to education and employment), but people lived pretty normal lifes. Unless you were in open opposition. It was certainly no prison, but it was no free country either. There were strict boundaries, an oppressive security apparatus for those who had other vocal opinions, heavy-handed ideological wide scale influence on many things ... but also the normal joys of life and even things this German state handled better (health care, kindergardens, equality of men and women). Fortunately this episode of German history ended (how it ended is another matter). Being the person I am today, I would not have fit into that country. I'm happy that I live in an undivided home country, that I can express myself (but also with boundaries, even non-legal ones), that I surveillance is not that obvious and doesn't lead to strict consequences ... and that I can buy a lot of things, being a proper capitalist ;). This video demonstrates that the NVA in DDR kept some of the Pressuian military traditions that were abolished by the Bundewehr in the BRD. You could argue, that in DDR some military traditions from the era of Preussia survived the defeat of Germany in the 2nd world war, but because of the process of de-nazification in BRD it did not. Of course I understand this is a over siplification, but the Bundeswehr became more of an anglo-american force in the face-off with Soviet led eastern european forces than anything else.

It has to do with the fact that West Germany wanted to build a new army that would represent a democratic country. The new army should therefore deliberately not simply be a continuation of the old army. In East Germany, on the other hand, they made it quite easy for themselves and more or less said: "The fascists who started the war and would like to go to war again are all in the West and are now American mercenaries. We, on the other hand, are the Good Germans and can therefore follow the German military tradition continue."

Excelente!!

Thank you for the comment! Yes, the NVA maintained more traditional uniforms than the Bundeswehr! The NVA had a mix of German & Soviet drill movements! They used Soviet SKS rifles and the way they swing their arms is directly copied from the Russian drill manual, while the parade step is modeled on the Prussian regulations of 1906!

Why did they use the Yorckscher Marsch when the officer marched past the troops for inspection? Were they still composing a "Präsentiermarsch" since they couldn't or didn't want to use the traditional "Präsentiermarsch Friedrich Wilhelm von 1813/Preußischer Präsentiermarsch"?
@MaximusandHistory Жыл бұрын
The repertoire of the NVA bands were limited on parade throughout its entire existence, and they always chose to perform traditional marches in between some DDR composed marches. The Yorckscher march was dedicated to Prussian General Field-Marshall Ludwig Yorck von Wartenburg.

@@MeracainMiracle The Soviet Union had faced over 200 Wehrmacht divisions in what was the largest land invasion in human history. The Western front had around 50-60 Wehrmacht divisions when the allies landed in 1944. Most of the lend lease that was given to the USSR had arrived in 1944 and 1945. By 1943, the USSR had already turned the tide of the war after the battle of Stalingrad and the Battle of Kursk. The Soviets were able to push back the Nazis but without the lend lease, it was unlikely that they would've been able to reach Berlin and finish them off.

I don't want to insult any of the soldiers here because they should be honoured for serving for their country, but: To anyone who is saying that the NVA kept Prussian military traditions, look closely. The marching style (swinging of the arms, goose step) is purely Soviet/Russian. The Kreml guards still use this marching technique today with no difference. The rifles they carry and the way they carry them is also purely Soviet. Again, if you look at the Kreml guards they use the same movements to present arms etc. Same with the sabers, they use Soviet style grips and techniques to salute with them. On bigger events you will see parades where two commanders drive up to eachother standing in the back of a car and than greet eachother or report something. This originates from Soviet parades and is still done in modern Russian parades. All in all the only "Prussian" or truly German thing about the NVA were the uniforms. I have to admit that they look much better than the Bundeswehr parade uniforms and fit much better to a German army. Even the helmets are Wehrmacht prototypes that never made it to the front in 1945. If you speak of the NVA please remember that just because these soldiers goose step and wear uniforms that closely resemble those of the Wehrmacht, they are not automatically Prussian.
