The 101st Airborne was called the Screaming Eagles or the Puking Buzzards by some. The 25th Infantry Div was called the Electric Strawberry because its patch was some sort of Hawaiian leaf that reminded people of a strawberry with a lightning bolt on it. The old Army Security Agency patch was an eagle's talon clutching crossed lightning bolts which ended up being called The Lightning Fast Chicken Pluckers. I'm sure there were names derived from other patches as well.

I was in the NC National Guard and was always interested in the military history of the 30th Infantry Division. The OH on the patch is for Old Hickory. It goes back to Andrew Jackson who was nicknamed "Old Hickory ". Also there was a theater made version that had Roosevelt's ss on it.

Nice video! I understand you can only scratch the surface, but another great (elite) division was the 10th Mountain Division with the crossed red bayonets forming an X (10) inside a powder keg. And not to forget, the First Special Service Force!! Maybe in another video…

Thanks- I never knew about the powder keg on the 10th patch! The patches I did were all from one collection that just came in so that was what we had on hand- but I am working on a Pt.2 for that one!

How come on some U.S. uniforms 1 patch and on an Ike jacket ever 2 different ones on each side?
@militarycollectiblesshop3 жыл бұрын
A great question! I will cover that more in Part II. But what they were allowed to do is wear what is known as a "combat patch" on the other sleeve, so if you saw combat with a unit, but were then transferred to another unit, you could still wear the patch of the unit you were in combat with, while wearing the patch of the unit you now belong to- almost an "honor" patch.
