Marine, and Boy Scout and Marine bugler here. This is the first time I've ever seen a flag lowering ceremony in which Retreat was played first (with everyone standing at 'parade rest') AFTER which To the Colors is played while everyone stands at 'attention' and salutes as the flag is lowered. (And that's just fine. Looks nice, but NOBODY would want to stand still that long nowadays.) In every ceremony I've ever seen, To the Colors is played while everyone salutes as the flag is raised 'smartly'. At flag lowering, everyone salutes while Retreat is played as the flag is lowered more slowly. In both of these cases, on a military base typically, civilians simply stand at attention and face the music. At the end of the movie, casual reference to the proper wearing of the uniform was given when the Master Sergeant buttoned one of the guys pocket flaps. Marines KNOW this but some people of the other services apparently don't: Whatever uniform you're wearing, you ALWAYS wear according to regs anywhere and everywhere. For example, you don't loosen your tie and unbutton your sleeves when you sit down in a dark movie theater even knowing no one is going to see you. Carry on.

All that yap from a former lower enlisted man to end with a command... I can't imagine having done something as a young man for a couple of years and pretending for the rest of my life that it's my identity. Then again, you were a bugler. All that useless wind for nothing.

Talk about "useless wind for nothing!" That would be YOU. There is NOTHING in my statement that reveals how long I was in the Marines, what my final rank was, where I served, and what my assignments were. You weren't even close, but I'm just going to let you wonder .....

The Army does it differently than the Navy and Marine Corps. The Army doesn't have "Attention" and "Carry On" calls, either.

Canadian Air Force officer here. It was interesting to see the small differences. -No saluting indoors in Canada -Tips of your fingers go to your temple, not your eyebrow But a lot more is similar than different

The end of the film shows it was made in 1965, yet the flag they showed was a 48 star flag. We got our current 50 star flag in 1960... Just an FYI.

And their fatigues are WWII and Korean War vintage.

@@lzcontrol I would've preferred to wear those than the ACUs, which didn't blend in with anything.
