I live just north of Friday Harbor: that water is SO cold, I'm not surprised that the body can have a bad reaction due to temperature changes if the outside weather is nice. Glad everything worked out! Thanks for checking on NW WA infrastructure, anonymous diver!

Just for those curious: a large 8-patient therapeutic hyperbaric chamber (where you can stand in upright) can bring you to 14m (2.4 bar absolute pressure) in about 5 minutes, but that is not the maximum compression rate - but is done to allow for comfortable equalisation so as not to cause barotrauma to the patients eardrums.

This was fascinating. It’s crazy how many hard lessons the navy has learned and how they have paved the way for safety standards

Thanks for the in depth discussions of accidents. I note that you frequently translate metric to US, can you please do the other direction when chatting with Richard? I'd also be interested in hearing any stories you have of people messing up conversions, I've seen a few mess ups because one diver was diving in feet and PSI while everyone else was diving meters and bar.

Thanks for the suggestion. Yeah, conversion misunderstandings can be a real issue sometimes.

My brother accidentally mixed up ft and meter and went past the lower limit for an excursion. Realized he was getting too low after coming face to face with a cod the size of his entire body. He and my dad got deep water certified afterwards.

Well us "18 year olds" that had "access to nuclear reactors" had 2.5 years of training before we can sit in the chair to even qualify on a commissioned ship. That meant another 6(ish) months of training once we got to our first command before we are fully qualified. I'm not completely sure, but I believe that's more training time than a Navy diver gets before he gets to his first operational dive.

You're absolutely correct no doubt. I don't want to understress how hard sub life is, however I have seen the day to day of sub life and understand the quality of talent that comes out of that lifestyle. It's not great however that may have changed since 2017 when I got out of Underwater Ships Husbandry (My first command)

Great video. Perhaps a video on how you should react if your buddy panics?
@DiscoveryDiversTokyo

That's a great idea, David. I"ll give that some thought. Buddy panice is someting I'd be less confident about as my buddy's size and strength grows in relation to mine. 😳

That was fascinating, thanks to you and “ Richard” for taking the time. I had to look it up because in the “90s” I loved that movie “ Men of honour”. There is a documentary with his son on KZbin kzbin.info/www/bejne/gn3Ffptun9x5e7M called a time of honour. Apparently Karl had to do that 12 step manoeuvre multiple times, just incredible. Thanks again
