I use to believe the same. But more recently I find myself questioning that. This countries founders were forced to fight wars that were not their own or in their interests. Take all the wars we've fought, except Desert Storm, who were they fought for and what was the outcome? What happened later as a result? More needless wars? Actually, let's throw Desert Storm back in there. Saudia Arabia is no longer a trade partner or ally. They've joined BRICS and as of this week no longer recognize the US Dollar for oil trade. This will impact our economy directly. It's a literal economic attack. So why did we waste our time fighting to defend them? Vietnam? Korea? Panama? How about Bosnia? Afghanistan? Iraq? War on Terror? All those countries are joining BRICS and kicking US out.....so what have we been fighting for to this point? Our government takes more and more of our tax dollars and for what? Anyone been to Philly, Portland, Chicago, NYC, California? I95 recently? Our citizens are homeless. Doped up zombies. Cities have piles of trash on sidewalks and in the streets. Infested with rats bigger than Shaq's shoe size. Bridges and over passes collapsing all over the country. Railroads: derailments almost daily across the country. We have towns and cities along every major river that might as well be labeled like Chernobyl. Our education system is complete garbage. Here's a quick example: Q. Are we a Democracy or a Republic? Now think back to read the Pleadge of Allegiance. Or here's a thought actually read the Constitution of the United States. Once you do that look at current times. Our country and ask yourself again the same question I have for the last 8 years. What have we become? Why have we fought these wars? Why should my children continue a service to this country that my family has provided this nation since it's founding? Has our people really benefited from any of the last 100 years of wars? "Tear down that Wall" was the most effective end to any war of any type in history. Only took words.

@timanderson9894 everything for America changed after WWII. Prior to WWII America was an isolationist nation, meaning we focused on ourselves and avoided international military or economic pacts. After WWI America had a massive economic boom but then the great depression happened, what got America out of our economic depression? WWII and being the arsenal for democracy brought us out of the depression, that's when defense industry heads and politicians created the military-industrial complex as we know it today. That's why after WWII America immediately made the USSR/communism it's number 1 enemy and subsequently participated in proxy wars or funding any anti-communism group around the world

I won't forget when I was getting out, it was late 2022 at Fort Bragg (they hadn't done the commie name change yet) and I was being processed out due to vax refusal after getting my medical and religious exemptions denied. I came across a mustang major who had some of Hal Moore's men as his drill sergeants, and he said he was glad to be getting out. After serving as long as he did and seeing all he saw, that speaks volumes.

Half my family are dual citizens with Israel. Both men and women are required to serve. However er, women may opt for a community service or military. Women can insist on combat roles, but many opt for admin work. If we are going to do this we ought to do it this way. Finally, as to those areas requiring physical strength, do not lower the standards. It is a safety issue not a discrimination issue.

Which comes first in our oaths as SMs? The Constitution or the President? I wonder why it was written in that order? Have our Service Members read the Constitution? Do our SMs know the Constitution? Do they know the difference between a lawful and unlawful order at this point? Do they have the necessary courage? I dont think so. Just saying. Look at the last 4 years. Since Jan 6 every branch of Federal Government has violated their oaths of office, the US Constitution, and much much more. As a veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan and getting forced out of the military during the drawn down in 2014, then seeing more folks getting forced out due to COVID vaccine refusal, I say good luck to the government. No one wants to serve anymore based off the way the government has treated servicemembers; poor leadership. Don't get me wrong, I had some great leaders in the military at the tactical and operational level; this is directed at the strategic level. Very poor decisions were made. They had the man power for force restructure, but tossed it aside. Forced service is the only way they can fill the ranks and they know it because of poor treatment of prior servicemembers; the population can see it. I also learned that war for profit is their intent. Loyalty, duty, honor, country, selfless service...bunch of baloney. It is about money. The pull out of Afghanistan looked like it was planned with crayons. I had a platoon Sargent that told me to get everything you can out of the military because when they are done with you...they are done with you...he wasn't kidding. I encourage kids I talk to now they can find success elsewhere. To build something they and their family can depend on. The US military isn't it.

Ok, this draft sign up has been a law for more than 5 decades. Doing it automatically makes little to no difference. The military has had more "volunteer" sign ups that a draft will probably never be utilized. The addition of women to this law is absolutely fair, equal rights is equal rights. This change is nothing more than a moot point. Nobody is being signed up to service, just being put on the list just in case a draft happens. As I stated this has been the law for men since shortly after Vietnam. Your issue with this point is absolutely moot. I was legally required to sign up for selective service when I turned 18. I graduated High School at the age of 17 and didn't turn 18 until after basic training. The Company First Sergeant hand delivered the form to me and watched me sign up for selective service so that I would be in compliance with federal law. I WAS ALREADY IN SERVICE. This was near 40 years ago. I was raised to hold the opinion that anyone who is able should serve for 2 years just for maturity sake and a bit of training if our great nation were invaded by an enemy. This rant of yours shows your vast lack of knowledge on this subject, and as a Veteran I'm disappointed that either your training wasn't sufficient enough or you didn't pay attention to this subject when it was taught to you. It's nothing more than an amendment to the current law to include women.

You can't apply that against a professional military like China and Russia, plus the latter has more experience. What the media isn't telling you is that Russia to defeating all these hi-tech wonder weapons we sent to Ukraine. But if you have a chance, stay away from the Mechanized Infantry if possible. Stay light, because chances are as the new guy, you will just be thrown in as the driver of a vehicle and relegated to staying in the motorpool fixing a parts that constantly break forever. And with the advent of drones, you're in a very expensive coffin. I used to be an 11M (when it existed). Screwing up your back changing track shoes is almost a given.

If a draft where to happen, what do you think about filling non-combat support roles with drafted personnel and combat roles being volunteer based? I feel like this could solve at least some of the morale issues when it comes to what you are saying with peoples hearts not being in it, especially as warfare becomes more technology focused. I'm a 82nd airborne Vietnam era veteran and enlisted in 74, draft ended in 73! I didn't see a tour to Nam but could have! I think enlistments are definitely needed yearly to keep our military strength to a max, you can't predict when a conflict will start and then start this draft procedure then! I think every capable man, not women, should serve at least a 2 year hitch in a branch of service to keep us strong and ready! But the one thing I don't like is sending our troops to more wars like Nam to fight a lost cause! Defend our country when provoked and keep our noses out of other countries business! Selective service has always been mandatory. The bill only makes so you automatically register. If you've taken out a student loan or worked for a state or federal government, you would have to be registered to begin.

If the latest national defense funding bill automates draft enrollment, it would be wise to start focusing on school nutrition, fitness, and civics lessons so the young ones coming up are qualified and willing to serve. As is right now, most 19 year olds aren't physically qualified to serve.

I knew this was going to happen when all the services failed to make their recruiting goals. You watch, next is they are first going to mobilize the National Guard and Reserves for a year to fill in units where there are the least troops or critical jobs. This has been done before back in 1940.

Many National Guard and some Army Reserve were mobilized for homeland security to include Air Force National Guard and Reserves. I was one of the half a million that got the call.

We won WW2 with draftees. My grandfather was one of them. He was shot two separate times. In the 25th Inf. div., he fought in the liberation of The Philippines and a few other places. Americans will fight, volunteers of not. And implying or saying they won't disrespects the sacrifice of all those drafted veterans of WW2. Those draftees are also the last Americans to actually fight to protect our country and freedom. That said, I just realized I'm comparing 1940's draftees to 2024 draftees. Never mind, we're fucked.

I volunteered because I wanted to serve my country, I’d read books on the LRRP in Vietnam and watched all of the movies in the 80’s. I ETS’d in 94 and I have a 14 yo son. After watching the uniparty deviate the mission during GWOT and the abandonment of our allies and our own in Afghanistan I don’t want to send our son’s to die for the Dow Jones vs BRICS.

Don’t forget, people that have certain skills or specific training, which has been identified as “occupations essential to the maintenance of the Armed Forces” are also able to be drafted from ages 20-44 (underemployed cyber security, healthcare, mechanics, skilled tradesmen hint, hint) Everyone should be concerned about the “public service draft” where people will be building bridges, laying concrete and “cleaning up their communities” for the federal minimum wage. Mark my words, there will be no age limit or gender restrictions in the upcoming “public service draft”. Everyday the “management class” screams “nobody wants to work anymore”, so eventually they’ll just pass some laws and make you work.

I think it would be a good experience for all young people to do some service, but I'm not altogether for military conscription. As a vet, I am not sure I would want to put my life in the hands of someone who didn't join voluntarily. Instead, perhaps include civil service and let those who don't want to join the military do their service as civilians. Let them build roads, pick up trash, mow lawns, etc.
