in american spec ops, the term originates with SF. therefore, it can't be limited to delta or team 6 because it was used for SF in 1959 (if not earlier), before a delta and before there were SEALs let alone team 6... check out the pic below en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Army_Special_Forces#/media/File:Code_of_the_Special_Forces_Operator.jpg en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Army_Special_Forces Also if you are doing operations shouldn't the term operator fit??

SO when I was in SWC (18D instructor) I had cadre out in selection who were fucking idiots. I rotated out to selection as a medic/guest instructor.. I had to pull cadre off to the side of events and mentor/counsel them...they were pulling some stupid shit with students that wasn't in their wheelhouse.. I would simply ask if what they told students to do was part of the curriculum (I already knew the answer was no) then I would tell them to get refocused on the event and not some vendetta/sadism or whatever it was...or we can talk to the senior cadre leader and then SGM. It doesn't matter to me.. Same as 18D cadre were also keepers of the Tab..Did they meet the standard set forth...not trying to fuck over students with some admin bullshit..if the student is a screw up it will show up...

I remember a candidate fell from the top of the rope climb and the cadre said “ Candidate you failed to negotiate this obstacle would you like to renegotiate this obstacle”…. When you’re waiting in line, you have to have your back turned not watching the candidate in front of you so from just hearing him fall and Cadre’s response was like damn. The one thing that got me through selection was no matter how tough it was at the “Sand Babies”(My Cadre had the smallest hands, and if you know anything about this obstacle it sucked to be me) or carrying the Jeep I always told myself “IT CAN’T LAST FOREVER”…. Outcome = SELECTED Class 9-11 (June 2011)

I served as a ranger and I respect everyone in the special operations community. For me personally I don’t think anyone should use it. It’s a dumbass term that’s been thrown around way too much. At this point it holds no meaning. In my experience I’ve never heard anyone call a special operations personnel or a SMU member an “operator” in technicality it’s simply not a thing. It’s ridiculous that this is even up for debate. If we’re going to be quiet professionals let’s talk as such and walk the walk. Debates like this are for the birds.

Military or civilian, anyone that works within a Special Operations unit, such as Bortac, HRT, or any other special unit is considered a "Special Operator". Its literally in the name, Special Operations.

Your view on this makes sense and I agree with you, but in my experience the instructors who are terrible if you speak to them about it, they will make it worse for you during the course

My advice to him. Keep that shit to yourself. Do the work. Exceed the standard. Be a good teammate. If you just limit your focus to that, you will be fine. Fck whoever and whatever you want on your free time

In the late 1950s SF qualified personnel adopted the moniker "operator" and voluntarily signed the "Code of the Special Forces Operator". This code was signed by inlisted and officer ranks. Line 6 of that code reads "I realize that it is my responsibility as a Special Forces Operator to undergo more intense and more rugged training than is required of the average soldier of the United States Army". There was no Delta force at the time of this document. Green Berets have every right to call themselves "operators".

Learn to follow ridgelines at night by developing a sense for terrain feature relief by feel. You will be surprised by how sensitive an instrument your body. Thia ia going to sound like I'm a nutjob, but if your hearing is still intact and you're still in your 20s, you can learn a rudimentary form of echolocation if you haven't already fucked your hearing. Cauliflower ear also ruins your ability to learn or do this, too, so if you do BJJ, judo or wrestler. There is actually an entire ouevre of night time soldiering skills that small little pockets of the US military had and have managed to preserve and conserve over the decades and in spirit, centuries all the way back to Roger's Rangers in the French and Indian Wars, but I fear that a lot of that's been lost in the modern era of NODs. I hear from modern soldiers about how they were on or on movement to target, or just roped down onto the LZ and find themselves being stared at by some Afghani goatherder, "like he knews exactly where we are." No, Ranger, it's not "like" he knew where you were, he DID know where you were, just like how I'd have known - I can hear those damned NODs (those old ones were loud as fuck, but most people, especially the senior soldiers /NCOs and engineers who work in those officers are older and/or have hearing loss so it didn't occur to them that these things were emitting noise that was "beyond the range of human hearing" that many young people could hear, but anyway, I digress but I'm old so fuck you.) Okay, I came into the Army (in a way, I was always in the Army) when everyone was getting NODs, not just the high speed units. But I was just as good in many conditions without them and I'd have soldiers askig me, "Hey LT, how do you do that?" "Do what?" "That jedi ninja shit." "I use the Force, private." Then I'd tell them, I grew up on OCONUS Army posts during the Cold War, pretty much every male authority figure (aka every male) I ever saw or knew was a Vietnam vet/recondo/Ranger/Green Beret. Every Scoutmaster, every coach for every activity, veteran or currently serving soldier. As kids, if we were caught playing with fire or fireworks or ant mounts, we were more likely to be shown how to play with fire, pyrotechnics, stinging and biting insects aninals safely. "Tell you what, if you want to learn, see who else is interested, tell your TL/SL and have them bring it up next time we are planning training. That sound good to you?" "Roger that." "May the Forcc be with you."
