Hey hello, i am an Austrian. Its our Military-spade. The 2nd notch is for shovel works. For example: Making a flat surface at the bottom of a hole (we dig in our fireplaces in the army 20-30cm), also to put material like sand, earth (especially in flooding time in spring of each year when snow is melting and hundreds of households have troubles to keep the water out of their homes. Our army do helping-works at this time of the year - filling sandbags and make some barriers and sealing doors with those sandbags as good a possible.), snow and so on - from one place to an other place. It becomes more shovel-like. When it is straight, in the 3rd notch - it is more spade-like. This is better for digging holes and trenches but useless when you have to do some shovel works. Your back will hurt within a few minutes. Oh one more thing: When it is in the 2nd notch - don't do to much pressure with your feet on this thing downward. Push more foreward - always in direction of the tip. You also could say: Spade-like is to digging downward and for hard surfaces, Shovel-like is to digging foreward and to manage loose and fluffy heaps of sand and earth. At a 90 degree angle, in the 1st notch you are able to do what you already showed to us. Making grooves to hide some detonating-cord beside/along a road (soldiers "always" go there for cover when they are walking on a road and they got under fire). But you also can scratch out deeper but tight holes you dug before. For example: To make a dakota fire hole/pit. To open the cover just open the snap-fastener an pull hard on that ribbon. The upper buckle will open then. You dont have to open it seperatly. The mounting-clip fits on backpacks molle-systems and also on fieldbelts. But we dont wear it on a belt. Its always on the backpack. Some people also put some oil or fat on the screw-thread. But i recommend to clean it out nearly fat-free and put graphite-powder on it. Sand and dirt will not stick on it now, it slips better and is easier to clean when it gets dirty. Therfore i always take a brush or brush-kind material ot from the nature. "I" just put oil on the thread when it have to become water resistant for wet and snowy conditions. I hope this helps. CYa in your vids. Bye! :)

Here is yet another practical use for this shovel: After digging a hole, fold it into the 90 degree position and use it to rest a cheek on when you have to take a "bear" in the woods. Quite comfortable IMHO. Another great vid Luke! Thanks.

Used it during my military service in Austria a lot. Had to dig deep holes to cover. heavy as hell but lasts till hell freezes.

That is similar to the old style US Army entrenching tool before they changed the handle. You are right in that they do kinda suck on your backpack. We used to remove the folding handle version from the carrier and stuff it with snacks back in the straight leg infantry days.

You can fold it like a pick and use it as a seat. Flat you can cook on it, and angled you can pry with it. Old military ones are sturdy and useful. Good video!

Hey Luke, nice video (like always) I'm from Austria and served in the army. Yeah, you're right, the middle adjustment is mainly for shoveling snow. Austria could be a snowy country, in fact one of the main tasks of our army is disaster management (like snow clearance on hard to reach places). I look forward to your next overnight adventure and a happy new year!

I have the American version that includes a folding Pick point on the other side of the shovel. It also came with a very sturdy Leather sheath with two buckles and straps. And it has a wooden handle. Got it 12 years ago in a real military surplus store for $25.

The center lock-down point angles the blade so you can clean loose dirt out of your hole once it gets to deep to do so with the shovel straight out.

Hi , Luke the 45 degree angle would work great for digging a water trench around your tent to channel water away from tent, because ya dont need to go deep, we done this a lot in the scouts . thanks for the night outs and the reviews

the 3rd position is for horizontal digging or scooping. As in bank digging, or filling a cat hole

The angled shovel setting would be good for any time you don't need to stomp down on the shovel to dig into the dirt. It lets you scoop into loose dirt/mud/snow/whatever without having to bend down as far.

It's a seat as well.

I picked up the Canadian version of one of these for $10 a coupe of decades ago. It also comes with the pick as well, and it's a tiny bit lighter than the Austrian one. Both are decent shovels but both are quite heavy as well. My only complaint is that the locking nut can sometimes jam, but with a bit of patience and a hammer you can get it working again. Like a lot of other folks, I keep mine in the trunk of my vehicle.

I have a similar shovel that folds into a 'Z' so there's nothing sticking out of the cover. The cover on mine is nowhere near as substantial as yours though. We also have a set of traction pads to help us if we get stuck in snow.

Nice piece of kit. I have the Nato version and take it when I go car camping or don't have to walk too far due to the weight. Useful tool though. Take Care and Happy New Year to you and your family

As an Austrian, having some experience with this piece of equipment (Cause of Army Service^^) I can say yes... this Shovel is heavy as fuck. Also it's very huge, and impractical to carry, even on the Austrian ARmys Backback (Which is designed that way you can put this Shovel on it). But I also have to say it works fine in the field and is nearly indestructable. Also Glock designed another Version of this (Which you can find really easy if you google for "Glock Feldspaten") which is a lot ligther than this Version shown on the Video. But that one hasn't been bought for the Austrian Army (Maybe for some Special Groups, don't know if they have it) so we have to deal with this old shovel ... but at least: it works :D

Oh, almost forgot that: You don't have to push the lock with your fingers. it opens automatically if you just rip hard enough :D Also sorry for bad english, not so used to comment on english speaking youtube videos... :D

Out of curiosity, how often do you take a shovel (of any size/weight) with you into the woods? I've seen very, very few bushcrafting and camping videos where the person brought any kind of digging tool with him. The only reliable exception is snow camping where they use the shovel to move the snow out of the way.

is it inspired by a Russian design?
@mihaiilie88083 жыл бұрын
No,it is inspired by Swiss mountaineers design. Also the kidney shaped shaped mess kits are originally Swiss. You know the folding swiss army knife. They made folding showels too.
