If it came down to using your knife, you would use it in hand to hand combat rather than throwing it at your enemy, like a low, IQ, moron. if you lose your knife, somehow, which is incredibly unlikely to happen, then you use your fists and whatever is laying around.

Its BS.. Anyone who tries this immediately knows one thing... IT ALL DEPENDS ON DISTANCE. If you practice throwing from a certain distance THE MOMENT you move closer to, or further away, from the target the knife will no longer hit point first. Why? Because the rotation of the knife is **distance specific.** You can't change the knife's rotation to fit a particular distance - especially if you have a moving target. Also, even if you get lucky and hit point first its NOT gonna penetrate much. Knife throwing is a trick for the circus, NOT for combat!

My great uncle served with the Royal Australian Army 2/5 Commandos in Papua New Guinea in 1942. There are photographs of the men on that campaign throwing knives at targets during downtime. In combat, the accounts record the use of knives very differently and no mention of knife throwing.

It would appear that they did it for recreation and fun ... since darts were not commonly available. The only practical way I know of to throw a knife would be attacned to the end of a 6' shaft. Navy seal I know who had his team working in the Ho Chi Ming trail for months on end. Each picked his own place to hide during the day and then would gather and deploy at night to ambush the VC walking with supplies down the trails. Lighting was non-existent so they had to SENSE the enemy. The VC is seems were always noisy so were easy to know when they were coming. and they knew [jungle ghosts] were in the woods so sometimes they even connected a cord to each other. These men had their choice of weapons for their silent operations but he never said anything about knife 'throwing'.

Knife fighting changed a great deal between WWI and WWII. Knives and edged weapons were common place and used extensively in trench combat when your rifle was an impediment because of it's length. I could see that being effective in the trenches, provided you were carrying a half dozen of so.

My Pop was a Vietnam era Green Beret with the 5SFG and he taught me, my brother, and all the other men he spawned from his 4 wives, a very similar throwing technique to this one, except that he would hold the blade from the tip before throwing it. My brother got so good at throwing knives and such that he can actually toss flathead screwdrivers into trees using this same technique. My Pop apparently even used such a throw in combat as a diversionary technique during a SHTF scenario were he tried tossing the knife into a Chinese(yes, they were over there) Officer Advisor. I don’t expect that he stuck the fellow… but who wants a Kabar thrown at them? It’d at least make one duck, lol. I have however seen him decapitate a copperhead snake that was behind and between my brother and I as we were riding on a “brushhogger” tractor attachment using only a thrown hatchet attack….. it initially scared the shit out of my brother and I before we realized he was throwing it behind and not at us- but we figured out what was up when he pointed behind us at a copperhead snake that had been expertly decapitated with my Pop’s hatchet. It’s crazy what can be achieved when one trains enough! :)

My buddy taught me the Military throw technique in 1968. It is called the "Last Resort", and only used as such. But a perfect throw involves one end over end revolution, one lateral half turn, and stick. Good luck. It takes a lot, ....... a lot......... of practice.

I use a half spin open palm, it just generates more force than any other throw in my repitore, I lose like 15%-25% accuracy though. No point in trying to target throw, it will be easier to dodge and won't imbed itself enough.
