Ugh, as an American Afghanistan Veteran, let me explain a few things: 1) Our marching style is not as flamboyant as other militaries. That doesn’t mean we don’t have a specific style we are taught though. In the Marines, in boot camp, we where taught to swing our arms 6 inches to the front and 3 to the rear. Our legs would slightly goose step, and you drive your heels to the floor. This may seem “relaxed” to other marching styles, but trust me it is def our own style. 2) Yes, marching is low on our priority list for training. No, I don’t agree with it that. Personally, drill and ceremony helped me feel pride for our military and country as well as instill some much needed discipline that I lacked. In basic training it was heavily stressed and worked every. Single. Day. But after boot camp? Nah, we almost never did it ever again, and I wish we did. 3) military parades here in the us aren popular for 2 primary reasons, the biggest being cost. It’s takes a lot of money to have these shows. Money which could be used for more practical means for the military. We already have the biggest military budget out of any country in the world several times over. Second, it’s viewed as slightly fascist here. Displaying military might on the streets of your own cities would make a lot of Americans feel weird. I don’t blame them. But I also at the same time think it would be cool as fuck to have a huge military parade on the 4th to celebrate Independence Day. I mean, America was born out of rebellion and war, so letting the military march with pride on the day of our independence doesn’t seem like a big deal to me, but to each their own. 4) I agree the troops here look like garbage, and it makes me cringe. We should def do better but trust me, most of our soldiers, Marines, etc absolutely HATE marching and find it pointless to do when actual combat training is needed fist and foremost. You want a military to look good and fight shitty? Or look shitty but fight extremely well? I get where they are coming from, but god damn if you are invited to a foreign country to celebrate their victory at least take it seriously. Anyway, I’m out. Hope this helps clear some things up haha

Yeah they really don't have a distinct marching drill style like other nations. People laugh at the goose step, but at least it looks cool and most importantly makes the marching look uniform. Exaggerated movements like goose stepping or just arm swinging like the British, help the soldiers keep in time with each other. You can notice the movements from the other soldiers, so you are aware of your step at all times. This is why American soldiers always look so sloppy and unprofessional when marching. It has hard to keep in step when you use subtle movements that are hard to spot while marching in unison.

To anyone wondering why we have a ton of parades in foreign countries and none over here, most of it is geography and logistics. We don't have the long, wide roads or squares of Paris or Moscow or roads capable of supporting large armored vehicles in Washington D.C (our capital city). Our WW2 victory parade was in New York instead.

As one North Korean soldier who did parades said, the American marching style is relaxed and easy because it demonstrates their physical care they have to their soldiers. To participate in North Korean parades means that drill and ceremony will result in major injuries, mainly in their legs. It's quite brutal to be able to pull off those ceremonies, but honestly it only shows the nations inadequacies being made up for with flashy formalities. The US doesnt flash its might in parades, it's quite modest up until it matters. At that point their power is overwhelmingly far above any other nation. The exception may be China due to recent changes, but the US still outperforms them.
@howie3601 Жыл бұрын
China isn't even an exception. Their "Navy" is counting small ships that shouldn't even be counted. That's how they have a "larger" navy. However, by weight alone, the US has a vastly larger navy. It's ten aircraft carriers vs one or two. The US has 4x as many aircraft as China has as well.

All these American units were Army. The unit in Red Square was pretty tight. The Army does not drill as extensively as the Marines, especially post basic, and it shows. When I see a detachment of Marines in our local parades here (we have a Navy base), you never see anyone out of step, no slumping shoulders or bobbing heads, no casual amble. And, no large waistlines! It's all snap-and-pop. America traditionionally does not have large scale displays of military might on our streets. It's not because we don't have the streets to accomodate the formations. There are plenty of very wide parade routes in Washington D.C., which was laid out in the 19th century very much like Paris or many other great capitals. We don't have military displays because in American tradition, a large standing Army was not popular, nor did it ever get much funding from Congress, until 1938, when it only had about 130,000 men and no armor. The Founders did not trust the power of a standing army, nor did they trust any political leader that could possibly use that army to oppress the people. Up until the Civil War, American military might was primarily found in the seperate State Militias. The small Federal Army was based in Washington with a unit in New York at West Point, but it was for parades and pomp. They were all spit and polish. The politically popular Gen. McClellan was so afraid of having them destroyed in battle that he constantly came up with reasons NOT to engage Confederate forces. Lincoln finally fired him. After every conflict the US has been involved in - except for WW2 - it severley mustered out its army and reduced funding to bare subsistence. ALL other powers kept very large armies and paraded them often to show their people and their potential enemies the strength and discipline of their troops. American leaders saw the US as a primarily maritime power, and so we built a huge and modern navy under President Theodore Roosevelt. But at the same time, the army was still using the obsolete trapdoor Springfield while all other countries had long converted to bolt actions for their infantry. After WW2, the US was forced to keep millions of men at arms, as well as build an Air Force and a hugely expensive Navy and strategic missile system. Ironically, we have been in near constant war ever since.

If you have to show your most powerful and advanced weapon, you're not the strongest. It's the equivalent of yelling when you're losing in a debate.
@defox50194 жыл бұрын
@@threestrikesmarxman9095 that's a really good way to put it. It's like Russia and North Korea bringing out nuclear missiles to parade around each year.
@defox50194 жыл бұрын
Besides, the US's most advanced weapons are the ones we don't know about yet or are still in development. One thing they are developing is a gun (a big one like artillery) that shoots 1,000 miles, if they can get it to work.

Russian military parade is the best. American military parade unfortunately not very impressive. Former U.S. President Trump wanted to hold a military parade on Independence Day after he attended French military parade. But his Pentagon military generals knew it can't be done.

The reason it was cancelled was because the tanks are so heavy they would crack the concrete paved roads! And the streets in Washington are not large enough to hold gigantic parades. US had done parades in the past but they’re very seldom like only 8 times.

we dont have the wide ass roads to support a full parade as well as cost, why spend millions to put on a show when it can be used furthering training, logistics, ect.
@PancakeBoi Жыл бұрын
another reason is that, there is no need to parade on our own turf, simply because were a Nation of power projection, the fact that the USA is the only nation that can parade in another country is already a bigger feat than parading at home. parades like these are usually done on a countries home turf to show off that it still has power (North Korea, China, Russia Ect.)
