I’m not criticising the American style of parading, I hesitate to call it ‘marching’, more like orderly walking, some out of step. As the brat of a British soldier remembering countless parade ground marching it’s difficult when comparing style to not comment on variety. It’s interesting to note the styles of some African nations, perhaps commonwealth or ex commonwealth, are very formal just like the British military. It’s also interesting to note that the Royal Marines and the United States Marine Corps have a similar dedication to tight disciplined marching.

It’s effective for what matching should be, why waste all the time and energy on some flashy drill that’s not going to help in combat? The US pattern of march keeps the posture straight, the legs loose and is low effort on the muscles. Everything you’d want to have on a long ruck march in combat. The British form of marching doesn’t work in the real world.
@maxn.723411 ай бұрын
@loganbaileysfunwithtrains606 Everything you said is true, but drill has historically been a sign of good training, discipline, and unit cohesion. Plus, it can be inspiring as hell. Cringe. Let me just say as a former US soldier, that most of these looked like dog shit. Including the entire US groups I saw. In the first demonstration, led by Marines, the PL wasn't even in friggin' step. This is an embarrassment. The US Army guys weren't much better. I say this with complete honesty as prior Army. The best looking among the US contingent was the second platoon of Marines bringing up the rear in the first video. The best tend to be Asian militaries, like Chinese and Korean. Much more precise and disciplined And especially if you're Chinese, you'd better be perfect, or you'll pay for it. LOL But in all seriousness, the US participants are quite obviously just guys out of the barracks and not a well-trained honor guard or other ceremonial team, otherwise they'd look much better than that.

Sadly too right. On the basis of "equal opportunities" are the US forces deliberately aiming at undernourished short recruits now? Seems so as recruitment there (and in UK & Germany) is so low now. Does not bode well when, say, compared to the annual May Day turn out on men & women in Moscow?

After basic training, except for drill or ceremonial teams (e.g., funerals) and music bands, marching is rarely done since parade marching takes PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. After basic training, you have a job (medic, maintenance, clerk, artillery, security, taking continuing education classes, etc.) and the time and effort to practice parade marching doesn't add to your job performance or benefits.

For the Commonwealth "90/45" degree march, its purpose is really just to maintain alignment. For similar reasons, when taking dressing, certain uniformed group members will raise their arms to keep the person next to them at a literal arm's length. I get that the goose step is supposed to be a display of coordination, fitness and discipline - but you'll probably only really see it when the troops parade past the VIP. As a former drill sergeant in a NATO allied country, I can certainly understand the time commitment involved in military parades. While some might see them as purely ceremonial, these events can serve to boost public morale, showcase national pride, and solidify international partnerships. There's a distinct difference between parade drills and combat maneuvers, but both require discipline and focus. The United States has a long tradition of military excellence, and their parade style reflects that confident demeanor. Ultimately, a military's true purpose lies in its ability to defend its nation.
