My husband did 7 1/2 years in the army first 3 years full time then last 4 years in the reserves. Did deploy overseas once. He has a job now fixing air conditioners but his hours are getting cut all the time. If he decides to join the national guard which does not require international deployment is it like the reserves. Or its full time. I want him to get a full time job. Thank you Hope to hear from someone soon. My husband is a little out of shape now compared to 7 years ago when he just got out of the army. He doesn't want to go back because of the physical fitness. He 36 right now.

The guard can still deploy you overseas. Definitely be careful with that expectation. While there are full time opportunities in the guard, the obligation is for part time (one weekend a month, two weeks a year), once he's in, he will have to pursue the full time positions.

In terms of tuition assistant, Will joining the national guard after active duty and using the state's education assistant affect Montgomery GI Bill?
@jasonburds
@jasonburds 3 жыл бұрын
No it should not. Watch some of my other videos and see if that answers your questions.
@chickenstrangler3826
@chickenstrangler3826 11 ай бұрын
It doesn't. You can use your GI Bill for tuition and also use the state offered financial aid. It should get kicked back to you. So the state aid will go directly into your pocket because your Post9/11 GI Bill is covering 100% of the tuition of college.
@mrnoname6327
@mrnoname6327 9 ай бұрын
@chickenstrangler3826 if you can use the state national guard waiver and it pays full, then do that. Then you can get the post 9/11 straight to your bank account or transfer it to your kid. The guard grant isn't payable out to cash like the gi bill as far as I know.

Depends what your goals are. But joining the right guard unit can be the best deal as far as benefits go for sure. Reserves is kinda active duty lite. I think that's the worst option really.

What’s the better route? Marine reserves or army national gaurd? I don’t mind deployments and I’ve heard that national gaurd sees more action and you can be deployed at airports etc as state security forces. Need help deciding… also what translates better into the civilian world in terms of MOS?
@jordanjaneiro354

Is it true that that the Army reserves do not have combat MOS’s ? Because that would also be a big deciding factor for some I know it was for me as far as choosing between the Guard and Reserves. Thanks

Hey John, sounds like you have a lot of thoughts going through your head. With the limited info given, it sounds like both guard or reserves could be good for you, but surely with more info on your goals a more optimal route will make itself known. I am happy to jump on a call with you sometime and discuss further if you'd like. Have you listened to any of the podcast episodes? I think there are several that could help give you better insight.

How many years do you have to do as AD before you get to transfer as a NG?
@jasonburds

It depends. If you get a "palace chasing" deal, you could get away with 2 years of AD and finish it off with NG.

Is it true you after 20 yrs you can collect retirement at 60? I have 4 yrs of AD, so I would need 16 more years and start collecting at 56?
@jasonburds
@jasonburds 2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Your 4 years of active duty will count towards a larger point balance - think larger pension, but it does not knock 4 years off the 60 for when you can collect your pension. I believe the only way to get it earlier is to accumulate deployed time in the guard/reserves.

So if you join national guard or reserve, do you have to stay stuck where you currently reside? I live in Puerto Rico, but I don't see myself living here forever but I also wanna get more information on both before commiting to one.
@jasonburds
@jasonburds 2 жыл бұрын
While you do sign a contract, it is common to do interservice transfers (going from one guard/reserve unit to another) or conditional releases (going from one branch to another). There are lots of options. It's far more flexible than civilians typically envision.

"The pioneers of a warless world are the young men and women who refuse military service. He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, senseless brutality, deplorable love-of-country stance, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action! It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder." -Albert Einstein
