I was former Navy from the late 80s to early 90s and went to work with MSC -East Coast from 2007 -2009. I've gotta say John really hits the nail on the head good here. I knew someone like Earl on the Mount Baker then and he was awesome with his knowledge. If I remember right I think he got a certificate for being on the Mount Baker for the longest consecutive days in MSC. The Ship's Master for the Kanawha was awesome, too. I wasn't on the Sacagawea long enough to get to know anyone before I had to return to the midwest to finish up some personal business. Now that I've had time to settle down I think it's time to get back to what I did best in life. I feel fortunate to have a beautiful wife who understands the life of a sailor and is willing to let me do what I've always done best at for a career.

@@PsychoLama2023 sorry I missed your reply here. I got my TWIC recently and looking for the next steps now. I'm just waiting for my son to be out of school before I have to take a trip to take a test or do STCW or whatever the heck hoop I need to jump through. That's just the way I'm thinking while anxious to ship out. It's been way too long since I've been near sea water. LOL

When I began the hiring process for MSC, the experience was stuid. Every week, a new requirement that most employers obtain in a one time employment application: personal particulars, enough information for a background check on credit, criminal history, driver license. Sems like MSC has a department for each and every line on an application and these departments are not coordianted. MSC processing is extremely time consuming, and a generally normally awkward process requiring lots of your time, filling out forms, getting processed like for external medical examination procedures and fingerprinting ... it is a government process perfectly attuned to being a wasteful, time consuming shuffle between departments wanting same information or new information that most any civilian prospective employer has at their fingertips from a one, maybe two page job application. So you spend 10 months at sea beause you could not get a relief at the "normal" five month duration and the you get 3 to 5 weeks off you get called back after 1 week off and are expected to go back for another unknown length of sea time or they will let you go. I don't do chaos. No thanks.

I work in the GoM with an Oilfield Services Company. You do not get paid when you are off. They do not help you get into schools. While MSC can earn 1/3rd to 1/2 more than base pay in my company take the base pay and cut it by 1/3rd to 1/2 less than base pay. I am trying to get into MSC. I have worked for MSC just after 9-11 for about 8 years. I am now a QMED with lots of endorsements.

🦸‍♂️ Having worked for MSC before and now being a QMED with all those endorsements, you're definitely ready to take on this new adventure. It’s true MSC offers better pay and more stability, and with your background, they’ll be lucky to have you back. Keep pushing forward- John

Do they still hire what was once called, "Radio Officers" ? I understand that they are now using GMDSS equipment, do ships require communications staff anymore?

You can buy back your NAVY time, my man! You have a right too. MCS is good. US Navy personal fit right in. Most Navy personal who work with MSC will help you out ( hey we are Navy) If your from another Arm forces personal ( it gets weird) As Navy we know! That's right, everything Chief is saying is " right on about the MSC schedule, not like the Navy: were you work until the job is done. I like how the Chief is right, working the deck plates is a supervisory role. You take care of your people, your people will take care of you! You gain the experience over time. People are important with MSC, it's a good job. You eventually gain insight, on proper procedures. If you follow protocol you will gradually obtain respect with your peers. Unlike the Navy, you will see the world. Gain important knowledgeable concepts with MSC. MCS is very secure Federal employment. You gain good working skills.
