Your channel is really interesting and I love the videos but your information on unions often comes across as politically motivated speculation and conjecture. It also often lacks important nuance and context, and sometimes is flat out inaccurate. For example, it is not true that union dues are used to fund political donations. They can’t be. Political action committees are separate legal entities with separate management and funded entirely through voluntary donations to the PAC exclusively through individual donations from members. The same is true of training centers, health plans, pensions, vacation pay plans, etc. They do not share funding, bank accounts, or management. Every dollar of money in a union, joint training center, or political action committee has is separately reported by each entity to the IRS and DOL and subject to both private and public audit. Unlike most tax returns, any member of the public can access these reports from the government and read them themselves.

Question unrelated to this but does as a veteran do VA benefits play a role in if you are allowed to do this job? Would this affect VA compensation as in it may be looked at as you are somewhat returning to military service?

Loved MSC. Sailed as a Boatswain's Mate. It's great if you are single or going through a divorce like I did and had nowhere to go. MSC took care of me!!! I homesteaded on AE's.

the unions pretty much got the big ship jobs BUT the oilfield, towing industry and inland barge companies hire a lot of people, actually far more than on the big ships and it is easier to get hired

Would you happen to know anything about the hearing requirements? I'm deaf in one ear but my other ear is fine and I have no issue having conversations with people. However I've heard some people say they test hearing in both ears with a machine and others say as long as you can have a conversation with the doctor at the physical they don't even bother testing your hearing or they might just do a forced whisper test. Maybe it's different between SIU and MSC? I can pass the whisper test but obviously not a machine test. Aside from that I guess i would have to get a waiver from an audiologist to pass the physical.

So if you have multiple (like 2 or 3) possession charges, even if they’re 10-15+ years old and you have proof of rehabilitation and can pass the drug screen, they’re still just gonna tell you, “nah?” That’s kinda crappy, if that’s the ACTUAL case. It just sends the message: “don’t BOTHER working on yourself because we’re NEVER going to let you back in the club.”

If applying for entry level with MSC, can we do the k/e abbreviated form, or do they want the long form? Thanks!
@joshmyers-nt9dr29 күн бұрын
forget about most of life ashore, it only gets in the way. you are in a completely different situation, you are either boat people or you are not. once you figure that out, things are easier
@joshmyers-nt9dr29 күн бұрын
you need entry level, go to the oilfield boats, crewwboats, tugs, supply boats. forget entry level with union boats. a whole lot more jobs on small boats than all the MSC and union jobs.

I am in the process of renewing my 25'tom Masters. I am currently not working in the maritime industry, but still would like to renew it. My sea service form 729 s, do I need to have my former employer sign it. I haven't worked there in a year. They terminated me. Walking in there and asking them to sign a document is something I want to avoid at all cost. Must I have my former employer sign my sea service document if im simply renewing my current license?

Could you do a video on what you know about Medical Services Officer. If you do, could you include the demand, overtime opportunities, daily tasks, promotion opportunities. Any information would be great. I've been a nurse for 6yrs and this looks interesting to me. Thanks.

Hi- My father who has been a captain for over 40 years and is 76 now is wanting to join the MSC- he qualified for a job as a wiper and he may fly out early December. I am worried about the safety on the ship and how much he will be required to work. I would love to hear your thoughts

A cook got ashes into my food, at least it wasn't the actual cigarette butts 😂 You make a lot of truck driver comparisons, but I doubt low to mid level mariners are responsible for everything on the boat like a truck driver is. IT people, mechanics, warehouse workers, literally everyone can drop the ball and NOT do their job and the truck driver will pay for it if DOT catches it even if most of those things are out of the truck drivers control

The question is, is there a certain time of the year where they are always accepting applications?
@thewanderingmarinerАй бұрын
It's about the supply and demand of mariners. Usually... new fiscal year is when entry level position are open. It may close once they have enough applications. So many factors... economy, government funding, and retention all matter
